Armed Posses to Solve School Gun Violence? Sounds like a Great Idea!

Joe Arpaio Gun violence

In what may be the least well thought out idea of 2013, Arizona’s self-described “Toughest Sheriff in America” Joe Arpaio plans to fix the rise in gun violence by arming volunteer “posses” that will patrol the areas around Phoenix-area schools.

Comprised of over 3,000 volunteers, some of who have criminal pasts, Arpaio’s posse will patrol the areas around 50 school campuses and will be “ready to fight crime if they felt they were needed.” Well, that’s reassuring…

And this isn’t the first time Joe Arpaio has dabbled in the world of posses. In addition to forming an illegal immigration posse to round up undocumented Hispanics, Arpaio also had a posse of “investigators” declare that Barack Obama’s birth certificate is fraudulent (so you know he’s sane batshit crazy).

This guy likes posses as much as he hates Latinos, but the real issue here is the belief that more guns will solve gun violence. The NRA and other like-minded Republicans are advocating an armed guard in every school while ignoring the issue of gun control and mental health problems. We’ll see how Obama and Biden’s gun control efforts play out soon but in the meantime here are a few opinions they shouldn’t take into consideration:

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” Wayne LaPierre, the National Rifle Association’s executive vice president

“I wish to God she had had an m-4 in her office, locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out … and takes him out and takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids.” Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas)

“Allowing teachers and administrators with concealed-carry permits the ability to have weapons at school events would provide both a measure of security for students and a deterrent against attackers,” Sen. Ralph Shortey (R)
