Brad Paisley is an Accidental Racist

Accidental Racist

What happens when you mix country music with rap? The Accidental Racist, the new song by Brad Paisley and LL Cool J. And what happens when you release a song titled Accidental Racist? Well it comes off a little, well, accidentally racist.

Basically, Paisley complains about how it’s hard to be white and LL Cool J raps about how it’s hard to be black. The song begins in Starbucks (for some reason) with Paisley getting all defensive about wearing his Confederate flag shirt.

The lyrics go:

“To the man that waited on me at the Starbucks down on Main, I hope you understand

when I put on that t-shirt, the only thing I meant to say is I’m a Skynyrd fan.

The red flag on my chest somehow is like the elephant in the corner of the south”

Then LL Cool J comes in with:

“If you don’t judge my do-rag

I won’t judge your red flag

If you don’t judge my gold chains

I’ll forget the iron chains.”

Once everyone with functioning ears declared this the worst thing to ever happen ever, Paisley attempted to explain himself to Entertainment Weekly saying he was just trying to illustrate the difficulties of displaying his Southern pride. He’s right – it is hard being white.

“I just think art has a responsibility to lead the way, and I don’t know the answers, but I feel like asking the question is the first step, and we’re asking the question in a big way. How do I show my Southern pride? What is offensive to you? And he kind of replies, and his summation is really that whole let’s bygones be bygones and ‘If you don’t judge my do rag, I won’t judge your red flag.’ We don’t solve anything, but it’s two guys that believe in who they are and where they’re from very honestly having a conversation and trying to reconcile.”

Whatever his reasoning, Accidental Racist is, as The Hairpin puts it, “a lyrical disgrace filled with awkward non-apologies and faux-pensiveness over the history of racism in the south”. And unfortunately, it has been removed from YouTube.

Next on the agenda: Paisley will team up with Barbra Streisand for his next single Oops, the Holocaust.
