US Government Wastes Millions on Penis Pumps… And Other News

Penis Pumps

Is money really wasted if it’s spent on penis pumps?

A report from the US Department of Health and Human Services said the government’s Medicare program spent $172 million on penis pumps between 2006 and 2011. The 474,000 claims for vacuum erection systems (VES) for seniors cost about twice as much as the consumer would have paid at the retail level. If only the government had adjusted its payments to what non-Medicare payers spend on penis pumps, then they would have saved about $14.4 million each year. The conservative think tank Heartland Institute was not impressed with the penis pump waste:

“Considering the strain retiring baby boomers will soon be placing on Medicare’s budget, shouldn’t we be focusing this entitlement program on real, life-saving treatment and equipment to serve the health needs of seniors – instead of subsidizing penis pump purchases?” said Ben Domenech of the Heartland Institute. “And to those seniors who really do want one, just buy it yourself – you don’t need to send the bill to your fellow Americans.” Toronto Sun

Cybersex DensWTF? According to a new BBC investigation, British pedophiles are paying good some money to watch the abuse of children in the Philippines via webcams. Philippines parents and pimps alike are realizing that they can make some easy coin from exploiting children in a cybersex scheme. The unlucky children are brought into cyber sex dens and are made to “perform” for creepy foreigners using a webcam. Parents use internet chatrooms to find prospective “clients” and are compensated via international money transfers. Some parents claim it’s totally fine because the British pedophiles do not actually touch the children – they just creepily watch them strip. But as long as they’re not touching, it’s totally legit. BBC News

Wendy DavisThe GOP is getting nervous that filibuster queen Wendy Davis is getting too popular for her own good their reelction chances. Denton County Republican Party Chair Dianne Edmondson is especially afraid of what will happen if the Texas state senator and Democratic candidate for governor ever makes the big time. Warning Texans that they shouldn’t take it for granted that a Republican would win the gubernatorial election, Edmondson tried to stir up some support for the Republican candidate Greg Abbott by bashing abortion Barbie: “Can y’all imagine what it would be like if ‘abortion barbie’ is the next governor? I don’t even want to think about that, so please help us elect whoever our slate Republican is starting at Greg Abbott,” Edmondson pleaded. Raw Story

U.S.-Army-Sgt.-Bowe-BergdahlOne is the lonliest number… especially when you’ve been held captive by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network in Pakistan for five years. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the lone American prisoner of war, is alive – but not that well. The U.S military has obtained a “proof–of-life” video of the POW, the first sign of life in almost three years. Bergdahl, who was seized in Afghanistan in June 2009 after finishing a guard shift at a combat outpost, appeared to be in a weakened state in the video – I guess five years in captivity will do that to you. razzies_adamsandlerAdam Sandler is the King of the Razzies! Just two years after taking home the worst actor and worst actress prize for his stunning performance in Jack and Jill, Sandler is back in the winner’s loser’s circle for his new comedy Grown Ups 2. If Sandler wins, it would be his third worst actor prize in a row! The “comedy” sequel led the Razzie lineup Tuesday with eight nominations, including worst picture, worst sequel, worst ensemble, worst screenplay, worst actor, worst supporting actor, worst supporting actress and worst director. Although to be fair After Earth, A Madea Christmas and Movie 43 got quite a few nominations of their own. Hollywood Reporter
