Jennifer Lopez Is Sorry She Serenaded A Dictator

Jennifer Lopez in Turkmenistan

On Saturday night Jennifer Lopez performed at an event in Turkmenistan and sang happy birthday to president Gurbuglee Bersjfgnsjdgdfjgid Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov (nailed it).

The Human Rights Foundation is all over Jennifer Lopez after she serenaded the 56-year-old leader of Turkmenistan despite his less-than-perfect human rights record. Human Rights Watch describes Turkmenistan as “among the most repressive in the world” and the country has been ranked as the world’s third-worst place for journalists. Yet despite Berdymukhamedov’s oppressive dictatorship, he was re-elected with 97% of the vote in 2012. Note: the election may have been rigged.  But screw electoral fraud – Jenny from the Block got $1 million from the performance!

“Jennifer Lopez obviously has the right to earn a living performing for the dictator of her choice and his circle of cronies, but her actions utterly destroy the carefully-crafted message she has cultivated with her prior involvement with Amnesty International’s programs in Mexico aimed at curbing violence against women,” said Human Rights Foundation (HRF) president Thor Halvorssen.

What is the next stop on her tour, Syria? The dictator of Kazakhstan’s birthday is July 6, maybe she will also pay him a visit?” Halvorssen asked.

Well we know she won’t be visiting Uzbekistan… Even if she changes all her lyrics to “praise the motherland”, Gulnara Karimova would rip her throat out in a jealous rage.

After the backlash hit, JLo’s representative played the dumb card, claiming Lopez wouldn’t have performed there at all if she had known there were human rights issues in the country (and apparently none of her staff knew how to use Google).

“The event was vetted by her representatives, had there been knowledge of human rights issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended.”

In the statement released to E! News, JLo’s rep went on to say that the performance was part of a concert sponsored by China National Petroleum Corporation and the “Happy Birthday” serenade was a last minute request, which she “graciously obliged”.

Then she graciously accepted the $1 million payout.
