Nelson Mandela Interpreter – This Guy’s A Phony!

Interpreter Gone Wrong

The sign language interpreter at Tuesday’s memorial service for Nelson Mandela was apparently a fraud, a fake, a total phony, who merely flailed his arms around during the service.

The fake interpreter, who translated President Obama’s speech, “was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for,” says Bruno Druchen, the director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa.

“He’s a complete fraud,” said Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town.

“He wasn’t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around.”

Loening went on to say that it looked like the phony interpreter was “trying to swat a few flies away from his face and his head”.

Throughout the memorial service, deaf users of Twitter took to the social networking site to say WTF?!? Where did this guy come from?!?

Turns out, nobody knows where this guy came from.

“The deaf community in South Africa are completely outraged and nobody knows who he is,” Ms Loening said.

“We can’t find a name or anything. The organisations who have accredited interpreters do not know him at all.”

Did anyone know this guy? Or did he just walk up to the podium and start flapping his arms with such confidence that people assumed he belonged?

After some careful investigation post-interpreter scandal, the man was eventually identified as Thamsanqa Jantjie. Jantjie insisted he was doing proper sign language interpretation of the speeches but he also said he hallucinated that angels were entering the stadium. And to top it off, he suffers from schizophrenia and has been prone to violence in the past. Good to know the secret service were doing their job…
