Pennsylvania Governor: Gay Marriage Is Like Incest

Corbett Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s Republican governor, Tom Corbett, took offensive homophobic remarks to a new level when he compared the marriage of same-sex couples to the marriage of a brother and sister.

Republican homophobes have long likened gay marriage to a marriage between a man and some kind of animal (“If we have no laws on this, people take it to one extension further – does it have to be humans? You know?” – Rand Paul), but it’s not very often they bring up incest. Enter Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett.

During an appearance on a Friday morning TV news show, the host asked him to clarify a statement made by state attorneys in a recent court filing, comparing the marriage of gay couples to the marriage of children because neither can legally wed in the state.

“It was an inappropriate analogy, you know,” Corbett said. “I think a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don’t you?”

After gay rights advocates called him out, Corbett apologized, saying his “words were not intended to offend anyone” and he simply intended to give examples of the kinds of people who aren’t able to obtain a marriage license in the great state of Pennsylvania.

Fun fact (if you’re straight): Pennsylvania is the only state in the northeast that allows neither gay marriage nor civil unions.

Even funner fact (if you’re anyone except Tom Corbett): Corbett has some of the lowest job-approval ratings in the country and next year’s election is not looking good for him.
