Rape Insurance in the New Car Insurance

Rape Insurance

Want your abortion covered by health insurance? Then you’d better buy some rape insurance.

Michigan’s Right to Life president Barbara Listing is facing some backlash after insinuating that women should purchase additional rape insurance if they want abortion coverage for rape assaults.

The Michigan chapter of Right to Life is backing a petition that would ban health insurance companies from covering abortions, even if a woman became pregnant from rape or incest. The new policy would prohibit insurance policies from covering elective abortions unless additional coverage is bought.

People do not want to pay for other people’s abortions,” said Barbara Listing.

Barbara defends the additional coverage by linking getting raped with getting in a car accident.

Nobody plans to have an accident in a car accident, nobody plans to have their homes flooded. You have to buy extra insurance for those,” she told reporters.

Well, that’s one way to get everyone on board. But Barbara only needs 258,088 valid voter signatures on the petition for it to be put to a legislative vote.

Supporters of Planned Parenthood were less than impressed with Barbara’s petition.  The group says the proposal puts “women’s health at risk” and that abortion insurance requirements would “result in separate and distinct costs for women, rendering coverage for comprehensive health care more expensive for women than men.”

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) is also skeptical about the proposal. Although Snyder is pro-life, the governor vetoed a similar anti-abortion proposal last year, saying, “I don’t believe it is appropriate to tell a woman who becomes pregnant due to a rape that she needed to select elective insurance coverage.”

However, if Barbara manages to get her 258,088 petition signatures, Snyder’s signature won’t be required for the bill to pass – only a legislative vote. Hopefully Barbara won’t get in a “car accident” when she’s out collecting those signatures. A rear end collision could do some serious damage.
