Sandra “The Slut” Fluke Running For Congress… And Other News

Sandra Fluke Rush

Remember Sandra Fluke?

She was that slutty college student who wanted campus health plans to include coverage of women’s contraception – or at least according to Rush Limbaugh who called her a “slut” and “prostitute” for her support of women’s access to birth control. RECAP TIME:

“What does that make her?” Limbaugh said on his show last year. “It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception.”

Well now that giant slut is running for congress. Fluke has officially filed with the California state Democratic Party to seek its endorsement in the race to replace retiring Henry Waxman (D-Calif). The women’s rights activist and former law student is up against two better-known locals, former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel (D) and state Sen. Ted Lieu (D) – so if she wins, it could be a fluke. Zing! Washington Post

Mandela WillLet the family politics begin continue! The will of the semi-recently deceased Nelson Mandela was made public on Monday and it seems the former South African had about $4.1 to pass around. That’s it? I bet Robert Mugabe makes that in one day. Anyway, Mandela left $10,000 to each of his over 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, $4,500 to a number of his personal staff, and 10 to 30 percent of all his royalties to the African National Congress (ANC). Noticeably absent from the will was Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela whom he was married to for 38 years during the struggle against racial apartheid. Ouch. CNN

Kilt ManScotland says okay to gay (marriage)! Considering their men already wear kilts on their wedding day, it was only a matter of time before the Scottish parliament legalized same-sex marriage. The Scots passed the Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill on Tuesday with an overwhelming 105 to 18 vote, making Scotland the 17th country to allow gay marriages. They’re still a bit behind the times though – same-sex marriage laws were passed by England and Wales last year. Still, congrats Scotland – just think of all the fabulous tartan weddings to come! bill-gates-desk-pictureSo much for retirement… Bill Gates got tired of swimming in his pools of money and saving the world from malaria and decided to get a little more involved in the day-to-day operations of Microsoft. It was announced Tuesday that Microsoft’s founder will step down as chairman and take on the more hands-on role of  “technology advisor,” working full-time several days a week. Got to keep up with Apple! Meanwhile, Indian-born Satya Nadella, 46, also entered a new role on Tuesday as Microsoft’s third CEO – a position Gates left behind in 2000. Nadella, a longtime insider, is considered to be a safe choice. “During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” Gates said in a news release. Except, of course, himself. Los Angeles Times

Happy-Birthday-FacebookHappy Birthday Facebook! The social network turns 10 today and to celebrate 10 years of uploading drunk photos and stalking exes, each of its 1.23 billion users can watch a short, personalized video highlighting their time on the site. To see yours, just go to Facebook/lookback and soak in the cheesiness. According to mine, I’ve been a Facebooker for over 9 years – which either means I’m really old or was slightly ahead of the times. Also, about a third of my lookback was just pictures of my cats… so that says something too. As for Mark Zuckerberg, who launched Facebook from his Harvard dorm room on February 4, 2004, he’ll be celebrating Facebook’s birthday with his estimated net worth of $30 billion. Euro News

Cat CafeIf there’s one area where Japan has America beat, it’s cat cafes. UNTIL NOW. Two cat cafes are set to open this summer in San Francisco. Finally a place where I can get my coffee with a side of cats! Two places actually – the Japanese feline phenomenon will surface in two spots: KitTea in San Francisco (likely Hayes Valley) and Cat Town Cafe in Oakland. Health codes pending, KitTea will be a halfway home for adoptable cats featuring catnip-infused tea and Cat Town Cafe will be an extension of Oakland’s Cat Town shelter and feature a miniature skyline of Oakland for the cats to crawl on and pretend they are Catzilla. They both sound purrrfect! I guess I better start packing my bags for San Francisco… Huffington Post
