Saxby Chambliss: Hormones Cause Sexual Assaults in the Military

Saxby Chambliss

Senator Saxby Chambliss is full of great quotes! Case in point: “I’m not gay. So I’m not going to marry one.” But this time he may have gone too far.

Representatives from both sides of the political spectrum are slamming Saxby Chambliss after he said that hormones may be partly responsible for sexual assaults in the military.

During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, the Georgia Republican called on the military to do more to crack down on sexual assault in its ranks. So far so good. But then he kept going…:

“The young folks that are coming into each of your services are anywhere from 17 to 22-23. Gee whiz — the hormone level created by nature sets in place the possibility for these types of things to occur. So we’ve got to be very careful how we address it on our side.”

The “Gee whiz” aside, the comment did not win over the crowd. Republican Rep. Mike Turner, co-chairman of the military sexual assault prevention caucus, issued a statement saying criminals, not hormones, cause sexual assaults.

“It’s simple; criminals are responsible for sexual assaults, not hormones,” said Turner. “Perpetuating this line of thinking does nothing to help change the culture of our military. We must be focused on combating this issue directly. The numbers speak for themselves.”

Although Saxby Chambliss’ “boys will be boys” mentality isn’t quite as bad as the whole legitimate rape fiasco, it’s still pretty rough. Chambliss has yet to apologize but Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz thinks he should get on that.

“For a United States senator, or anyone, to write off sexual assault and the personal violation of a woman or a man to the raging hormones of youth shows just how dramatically out of touch the Republican Party is,” she said.

“I think he should think about whether if, God forbid, a sexual assault happened to a daughter of his, would he think it was OK for a senator to just chalk the assault up to raging hormones?”

Yes, an apology / statement recall is probably needed here. Otherwise, the new excuse for sexual assaults will be “my hormones made me do it”. And as everyone in the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing knows, including Saxby Chambliss, there are A LOT of sexual assaults in the military.
