IUDs Are Now Abortions, According to One Colorado Republican

IUDs Abortion

A Republican Colorado lawmaker is opposing efforts to continue a family-planning initiative that provides IUDs to lower income women because he believes the birth control method is akin to abortion.

The Family Planning Initiative pilot program had been funded in 2009 by a $25 million grant from an anonymous donor and had been working so well that the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) estimated that it helped reduce teen pregnancies by 40 percent, teen abortions by 35 percent AND resulted in $23 million in savings in Medicaid assistance to women and children. With an extra $5 million from the state’s general fund, the CDPHE projected that the program could save the state $40 million in Medicaid costs in the future. Fewer abortions? Fiscal conservatism? Sounds great, sign me up!

To keep the program going, a group of bipartisan lawmakers have been trying to push a bill through the Colorado Senate. But they’re running into one big problem: Republican Kevin Lundberg.

Kevin Lundberg, chair of Colorado’s Senate Health Committee, says that because an IUD in some cases can prevent fertilized eggs from embedding themselves in the uterus, this counts as abortion and thus disqualifies the measure from state funding.

Typically, an IUD prevents sperm from meeting an egg, and therefore prevents pregnancy. But if the egg and sperm do meet, the IUD keeps that embryo from planting itself in the uterus. Despite the fact that pregnancy begins at the implantation of the fertilized egg, Lundberg believes this crosses the abortion line.

“The state constitution says no direct or indirect funding from the state shall go towards abortion,” he said.

And apparently IUDs are the equivalent of abortions, ignoring the fact that IUDs work before pregnancy occurs and Kevin Lundberg has no idea what he’s talking about.

But if Kevin Lundberg IS right and abortions can happen before pregnancy even occurs, just think of all the abortions that are out there happening right now…

Can’t get it up? That’s an abortion!

On your period? That’s an abortion!

Giving oral sex? Well, that’s just mass cannibalism.

It’s Business As Usual in Saudi Arabia… And Other News

Saudi Arabia King

The King of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah, has died at the age of 90, weeks after being admitted to hospital with a lung infection.

His half brother and heir to the Saudi throne, Prince Salman, is 79 years old and is also in very poor health – meaning Saudi Arabia will be back in the same spot in a few years. Within hours of acceding to the throne, the newly appointed King Salman, vowed to maintain the same policies as his predecessors. “We will continue adhering to the correct policies which Saudi Arabia has followed since its establishment,” he said in a speech on state TV. So… intolerance of free speech, gender discrimination and multiple beheadings? The Guardian

Hitler MustacheFurther proof it’s never a good idea to don a Hitler mustache: the head of the German anti-Islamisation movement Pegida has stepped down after a picture of him posing as Adolf Hitler went viral. In addition to the Hitler pose, Lutz Bachmann made some disparaging anti-refugee comments on Facebook in which he reportedly described immigrants as “cattle”, “scumbags” and “trash”. Pegida spokeswoman Kathrin Oertel said the anti-refugee comments went too far but the “Hitler” photo was totally fine and that it was a “joke” and “satire, which is every citizen’s right”. Nevertheless, the German government was not pleased. Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said: “Anyone in politics who poses as Hitler is either a total idiot or a Nazi. Reasonable people do not follow idiots, and decent people don’t follow Nazis.” Fair enough. BBC News

Annual March For Life Protests 1973 Roe v. Wade Ruling In WashingtonYesterday marked the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, in which the US Supreme Court ruled women had the freedom to terminate a pregnancy if they desired, ending once and for all America’s abortion debate – minus the four decades of passionate debate that followed. Yesterday was no exception to the ongoing abortion fight. Anti-abortion protesters marched in Washington as the US House passed a bill to tighten restrictions on abortion. Although an earlier bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks was scrapped, the Republicans did manage to pass a more limited measure to forbid the use of taxpayer money for abortions. The White House has said it will veto the legislation – arguing it “unnecessarily restricts women’s reproductive freedom and consumers’ private insurance options” – making the whole thing a fruitless endeavour. But since the US is still sharply divided on the issue of abortion, with polls suggesting Americans are about evenly split four decades after the Roe v Wade, politicians and citizens alike will continue to squabble over the issue or years to come.  New York Times

Climate Change Senate 1The US Senate passed an amendment on Wednesday saying climate change is real and not a hoax – because the only way to decide if something is a scientific fact is by having politicians vote on it. The measure, stating that “climate change is real and is not a hoax”, passed by a margin of 98-1. The lone dissenter was Senator Roger Wicker from Mississippi. Sigh… Although to Mississippi’s credit, their other state Senator, Thad Cochran, voted yes – possibly because he’s old enough to have witnessed all the cyclical trends since the last ice age. The whole climate science squabble broke out during debate over amendments to the bill to approve the Keystone XL pipeline. Democrats wanted Republicans to admit that climate change is real and that human activity plays a role. But while Republicans were willing to admit that climate change isn’t a hoax, many refused to admit that human activity is a factor. Two other amendments (which needed 60 votes to pass) failed: “human activity significantly contributes to climate change” failed 50-49 and “human activity contributes to climate change” failed 59-40. Still, progress…? The Hill

Texas: Ebola for Some, Abortions for Others!

Abortion Restrictions Texas

While some Texans are busy fearing an Ebola outbreak, others are out celebrating/cursing the latest Supreme Court decision which has blocked vital components of the strict antiabortion laws enacted in Texas last year by Gov. Rick Perry.

The Texas law, which Rick Perry and his fellow Lone Star conservatives say is designed to protect women’s health, required all abortion clinics in the state be “ambulatory surgical centers,” regulated under the same standards as hospitals and forced doctors performing abortions to first obtain admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The new restrictions effectively shut down all but eight abortion clinics throughout the state – which are all clustered in metropolitan regions in the eastern part of Texas. And by abortion clinics, I mean family planning clinics, which provide a multitude of services to women who otherwise cannot afford them, of which abortions are only one part.

But now, in a 6-3 ruling (Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito opposed, obvs), the Supreme Court has ordered Texas not to enforce parts the law – at least until more appeals can be filed on the larger questions of the Texas law’s constitutionality. The Supreme Court blocked the surgical-center requirement entirely and the admitting-privileges requirement as it applied to clinics in McAllen and El Paso.

“The U.S. Supreme Court gave Texas women a tremendous victory today,” said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights. “Tomorrow, 13 clinics across the state will be allowed to reopen and provide women with safe and legal abortion care in their own communities.”

“This fight against Texas’ sham abortion law is not over. HB2 was designed to gut the constitutional protections of Roe v. Wade and half of the state’s clinics remain closed,” she added.

“We’re seeing the terrible impact these restrictions have on thousands of Texas women who effectively no longer have access to safe and legal abortion,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “We’re relieved that the court stepped in to stop this, and we hope this dangerous law is ultimately overturned completely.”

Although it’s only temporary, Tuesday’s ruling could lead to access by the millions of women unable to reach the major cities where the few remaining facilities are still open.

But the court’s ruling won’t stop Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican who is the favorite in next month’s governor’s race, from defending Rick Perry’s restrictive abortion bill to the death – because it’s not like there are more pressing medical crises happening in Texas right now…

Abortions for All in Missouri! Pending a 72 Hour Wait… And Other News

Missouri Abortion Wait

Need an abortion in a hurry? Don’t count on one in Missouri.

Conservative lawmakers in Missouri have increased the state’s required waiting period for getting an abortion from one day to three days – no exceptions, not even for rape or incest. The Republican-controlled legislature overrode Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto to enact a 72-hour delay. The governor denounced the measure as “extreme and disrespectful” toward women. About half the states already have abortion waiting periods of 24 hours. Once Missouri’s new requirement takes effect, the state will be the second most-stringent behind South Dakota, where the waiting period does not count weekends or holidays. I would imagine most women have already thought long and hard about their decision by the time they get to the clinic, so I’m not sure what an extra 48 hours of soul-searching will accomplish. Maybe just some undue hardship? According to Planned Parenthood, which operates Missouri’s only licensed abortion clinic in St. Louis, its patients travel an average of nearly 100 miles for an abortion, so the extra delay could force them to either make two trips or spend additional money on hotels. Catholic PregSpeaking of not doing things the “Catholic way”, a Detroit-area teacher says she was fired from her post at a private Catholic all-girls high school after she and her lesbian partner announced they were expecting a child through non-traditional means. After she was canned, the teacher posted on Facebook that she had been forced from her job after she become pregnant “outside the Catholic way.” The school has not publicly commented on her termination, but apparently they have a morality clause that states teachers “will not publicly engage in actions, or endorse actions or beliefs contrary to the teachings and standards of the Roman Catholic faith and morality.” So teachers of the Detroit, please stick to getting pregnant “the Catholic way”: no birth control, millions of unintended pregnancies, quick spreading STDs, pedophilia welcome, and pregnancy through rape is fine. Dogs Rabies ChinaGoodbye rabies, hello thousands of dog corpses! Authorities in China have killed almost 5,000 dogs after rabies was blamed for the death of five people. Four people died in June and one in July, and multiple dog bites were reported. As a result, municipal authorities in Baoshan, in the southwestern province of Yunnan, killed 4,900 dogs and vaccinated 100,000 more as part of its anti-rabies campaign. Mass dog killings are nothing new in China. The Chinese government often orders stray dogs to be culled in order to prevent outbreaks of rabies. In 2009, officials in the northern city of Hanzhong reportedly killed 37,000 in an effort to rein in the rabies. CNN

Terri-Jean BedfordA sex scandal has hit the Canadian Snooze-fest Senate! A former sex worker who is challenging Canada’s prostitution laws was kicked out of a Senate hearing after she threatened to name politicians who hire prostitutes. Terri-Jean Bedford, the stunning dominatrix who won a Supreme Court battle to overturn Canada’s prostitution laws, engaged in some disorderly conduct during the hearing. Bedford was expelled after she argued and interrupted another senator, became increasingly combative, and tried to go over her allotted time. How rude! But before the self-proclaimed “most famous dominatrix in Canada” was kicked out, she threatened to expose politicians who supposedly avail themselves of the world’s oldest profession. “If this law passes I’m going to make you guys forget about Mike Duffy, because I’ve got more information and more proof on politicians in this country than you can shake a stick at, I promise,” she said. I wonder if Rob Ford is on that list? Toronto Star

Sick FordSpeaking of Rob Ford, how’s that guy doing? Not too well apparently. The Toronto mayor was admitted to the hospital Wednesday after doctors found what they believe to be a tumour in his abdomen. “Examination and investigation has resulted in a working diagnosis of a tumor,” according to a statement from Humber River Hospital on Wednesday. “The mayor has been admitted to allow for further investigation to obtain a definitive diagnosis.” No word yet on what impact the tumour will have on his rampant alcoholism and crack-addiction, but there is already speculation on what it will do to his mayoral campaign, which (for some reason) has seen a resurgence in recent polls. If his health deteriorates, Ford may be forced to withdraw his name from the Oct. 27 mayoralty ballot… or even worse, his brother Coun. Doug Ford may be tempted to take his place. Noooooo!! CBC News

Mom Jailed For Giving Teen Abortion Pill

Abortion Pill Crime Scene

A Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to up to 18 months in prison for obtaining European abortion pills online and providing them to her teenage daughter who wanted to end her pregnancy.

Jennifer Ann Whalen, 39, pleaded guilty to violating a Pennsylvania state law that abortions must be performed by a physician. The single mother and nursing home aide claimed she did not have insurance to cover a hospital abortion and the closest clinic was 74 miles away in Harrisburg. So she turned to the next best thing: miscarriage-inducing pills from an online site in Europe.

The only problem with ordering medicine online is… well, it’s pretty dangerous. Whalen’s 16-year-old daughter ended up experiencing severe cramping and bleeding after taking the pills. Two weeks after administering the abortion pills, Whalen rushed her daughter to the Geisinger Medical Center where she was treated for an “incomplete abortion and a urinary tract infection”. After doctors figured out her self-prescribed abortion plan, the authorities were alerted and two years later, the single mother was officially charged with brewing Pennsylvania state law.

Whalen was sentenced on Friday to 9-18 months in prison for providing her daughter with a DIY abortion. In addition to her jail sentence, Whalen will also be forced to pay a fine of $1,000 and perform 40 hours of community service.

While Whalen undoubtedly put her daughter in danger by ordering medicine online instead of seeing a physician for a “proper abortion”, the case highlights what pro-choicers have been saying all along: legislation passed to restrict a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy disproportionately impacts poorer, rural women. Turns out the Republicans’ plans to close down clinics and place restrictions on abortions may be leading people to back alley abortions … or, in this case, sketchy European websites.

There seems to be only one solution – and it doesn’t involve providing access to safe, legal abortions and affordable health insurance to cover the cost. Next time a woman experiences severe cramping and bleeding from pills purchased online, she should just avoid the hospital and bleed out in bed. Problem solved, no jail time involved.

A Third of Detroit Pregnancies End in Abortion… And Other News

Detroit Abortion

Detroit: come for the abortions, stay for the decaying houses.

New data shows that the abortion rate in Detroit has reached an alarming 31 per cent. A total of 5,693 of Detroit’s 18,360 pregnancies in 2012 ended in abortion, while elsewhere in the country abortion rates have flatlined or decreased. The secret to Detroit’s abortion-craze? Decreased funding for family planning and contraceptives combined with good old fashioned poverty. In fact, Detroit is so poor these days that 22 per cent of the city’s buildings are blighted. And to make matters worse, the city’s Blight Task Force says it will cost $850 million and take up to five years to remove the 84,641 Detroit properties that are in a less than desirable condition. The feds have already made $456 million available for cleanup because… well, Detroit is a little short of cash. Detroit News

Barack Obama, James Cunningham, Joseph DunfordObama makes a surprise visit to Afghanistan. And the surprise is… we’re not going anywhere! After Air Force One landed at Bagram Air Field on Sunday night, Obama addressed the troops and reassured them that “America’s war in Afghanistan will come to a responsible end” – although he left his big announcement for later. Obama did not meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai during the surprise visit because… they hate each other. But Obama did bring along country singer Brad Paisley – presumably as some kind of torture device. Once Obama got out of the country and safely away from the exhausted soldiers, he made his big announcement from Washington: the US will keep 9,800 troops in Afghanistan after they conclude their combat mission at the end of this year. The plan is to begin a massive draw-down of troops in Afghanistan from 32,000 to 9,800 by the beginning of next year—if the Afghan government signs a bilateral security deal—and then work on a complete withdrawal for the end of 2016. But even though the troops will be sticking around a bit longer, Obama said he hopes that by the time he leaves office the longest war in American history will finally be over. Le PenLong live xenophobia! The results of the European Parliament election revealed big some gains for anti-EU groups and far-right parties. Marine Le Pen in particular delivered a major victory for the far-right Front National party, which is both anti-immigration and anti-European Union. Marine Le Pen’s party topped the poll in the  nationwide election, with 25 per cent of the vote. Le Pen declared the results a “massive rejection of the European Union” and a massive rejection of all immigrants. Le Pen said she would use her electoral mandate to “defend France” and fight “crazy measures like votes for immigrants.” The UK Independence Party also contributed to the “political earthquake” by winning first place with 27 per cent of the vote. UKIP, who define themselves as a “libertarian, non-racist party seeking Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union” are also known for their anti-immigration stance. BBC News

Nigerian Girls MissingThe Nigerian military has found the kidnapped schoolgirls! But they can’t tell you where they are and they definitely won’t attempt a rescue. Air Marshal Alex Badeh said the government has now located the missing girls, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram six weeks ago, but they could not take the risk of using force to rescue them. “Where they are held, can we go there with force? We can’t kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back,” he said. The missing girls are believed to be somewhere in the forests of northeastern Borneo state, near Chad and Cameroon and while the military won’t risk going there with force, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff said it was “good news for the parents.” If that’s his definition of good news, I’d hate to be in Nigeria on a bad news day. Euro JewIt’s tough to be a Jew in Europe these days… well not as tough as it used to be with that whole Holocaust ordeal, but it still ain’t easy being Jewish. On Saturday, a shooting at the Brussels Jewish Museum left four people dead: an Israeli couple, a museum employee, and a volunteer. The lone gunman escaped after the shooting, prompting a nationwide manhunt for the anti-Semitic attacker. Then, just a few hours later, two Jewish men were assaulted as they walked towards their synagogues in suburban Paris. A study last week showed that 74 percent of French Jews want to leave the country, with a significant portion fearing anti-Semitism. Turns out their fear is fairly warranted. CBC News

The Rob Ford Reality Show, Ford Nation, is Cancelled… And Other News

Rob Ford Nation

Times are tough for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his Ford Nation.

Just one day after having his mayoral powers stripped by the Toronto City Council, Sun News Network cancelled his reality show Ford Nation after just one episode. Ford Nation’s debut episode (and I guess the series finale) aired on Monday night and featured the crack-smoking mayor and his brother Doug, who sits on the city council. The hour long show was basically just the Fords going back and forth about the media’s obsession with the mayor and his crack-smoking, p*ssy eating, drunk-driving ways. But even that was not enough to draw more than 155,000 viewers and Ford Nation was quickly sacked. Hollywood Reporter

Burger King IndiaIndians are about to get a little fatter and a little more American. Burger King has just announced that it will be expanding its franchises into India. Ever since the first McDonald’s opened in 1996, fast food places have been popping up all over the country – and Burger King wants a piece of the action. “India is a market with huge potential for Burger King restaurants and we have the chance to offer the unique Burger King brand proposition to its consumers with our own local twist to the menu,” said Elias Diaz Sese, president of BK AsiaPac Pte. Ltd. No word yet on whether the fast food giant will sell its signature Whopper or other beef burgers. When McDonalds broke into the market they dropped beef and pork from menus, in keeping with the religious practices of Hindus and Muslims, and added such India specific items: the McVeggie sandwich and the Spicy Paneer Wrap. Authentic Indian food – yum! Wall Street Journal

Afghan DealIs the war in Afghanistan coming to an end? No, it’s the war that never ends, it just goes on and on my friend, some people started fighting it not knowing what it was, and they’ll continue fighting it forever just because…no one is pulling out the troops – not even after 2014. The US and Afghanistan have reached a security agreement about life after 2014. Well, they haven’t so much as reached an agreement as they’ve agreed to the text of a security agreement – the real thing still needs to be drafted up and officially accepted by Afghan leaders and the Afghan parliament.  The approval of the security agreement would pave the way for a small number of Americans troops to remain on the ground in Afghanistan beyond 2014 – as long as they are given immunity from Afghan courts. Otherwise, they are out of there! But according to White House spokesman Jay Carney, these remaining soldiers would have a very limited mission. “The war in Afghanistan will end next year, as the president has promised,” Carney said. “The combat mission will be over.” CNN

Texas Abortion LawThe Texas abortion law is here to stay… for now. The U.S. Supreme Court refuses to stop a restrictive abortion law in Texas, meaning the law, which opponents say have led more than a third of the state’s clinics to stop providing abortions, will remain in effect until a planned appeal hearing in January. “This is good news for the unborn and for women,” Texas Gov. Rick Perry said after the decision. Minus the women with unwanted pregnancies… The restrictive law, which will effectively close abortion clinics in much of the state, has sparked a fierce debate – mainly between Gov. Rick Perry and State Senator Wendy Davis who filibustered the bill for 11 hours in June. USA Today

HangersDemand for metal coat hangers in Texas rose dramatically after the attorney general requested an emergency ruling be granted by a federal appeals court judge that would allow the state to enforce a law that could shut down a dozen abortion clinics in Texas. Governor Rick Perry signed the anti-abortion law back in July, after an successful 11-hour filibuster by Senator Wendy Davis. But on Monday, one day before the law was to take effect, a federal judge deemed key parts of the law, which requires abortion-performing doctors to have admitting privileges at a hospital within a 30-mile range of the clinics they use, unconstitutional. In response to the judge’s ruling, Perry vowed he and others will keep fighting – to the death! Hence the emergency appeal to keep the restrictions on schedule… Huffington Post

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera Praises 11-Year-Old Rape Victim

Chilean Pinera

While Texas Governor Rick Perry is pulling out all the stops to get his beloved restrictive abortion bill passed, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera is praising his country’s even more restrictive abortion laws.

Chile’s president, Sebastian Pinera, praised a pregnant 11-year-old rape victim for her “depth and maturity” after she said in a recent TV interview that she was happy to have the child. The young girl also said in the interview that having the child would be “like having a doll” so I’m not quite sure how high her maturity level really is…

“I’m going to love the baby very much, even though it comes from that man who hurt me… It will be like having a doll in my arms,” the 11-year-old said in the TV interview.

Maturity level aside, the 11-year-old, who was raped repeatedly over a two-year period by her mother’s boyfriend, has now become President Pinera’s poster child for Chile’s abortion laws. Chile is one of seven Latin American countries where abortion is completely banned and Pinera wants to keep it that way.

“I’ve asked the health minister to personally look after the (girl’s) health,” Pinera said. “She’s 14 weeks pregnant, and yesterday she surprised us all with words showing depth and maturity, when she said that, despite the pain caused by the man who raped her, she wanted to have and take care of her baby.”

Pinera’s comments have caused some outrage among his critics, who say that abortion should be legalized in cases of rape or when the mother’s life is in danger. Experts have also criticized Pinera’s comments, saying the girl would not have the mental or emotional capacity to understand her situation.

“At that age the girl doesn’t have a capacity of discernment, not even at age 14 would she have the mental and emotional capacity to discern this,” said Giorgio Agostini, a forensic psychologist, “What the president is saying doesn’t get close to the psychological truth of an 11-year-old-girl. It’s a subjective view that is not based on any scientific reasoning to support it.”

Considering it took Chile until 2004 to legalize divorce, I’d say they have a long road ahead of them in terms of abortion rights…

Rick Perry Kills Everyone’s Buzz… And Other News

Rick Perry is a Downer

Rick Perry – what a buzz kill!

After Senator Wendy Davis’s famous filibuster marathon to stop a restrictive abortion bill from passing, Texas Governor Rick Perry, aka Buzz McKillington, called for the Texas Legislature to meet in a second special session July 1 to try for a second time to pass the abortion restrictions. The Rick Perry desired restrictions include reducing the abortion deadline to 20 weeks and imposing restrictions on clinics, which would effectively close down all but 5 abortion clinics in the state of Texas.

“I am calling the Legislature back into session because too much important work remains undone for the people of Texas,” Rick Perry said in a statement. “Texans value life and want to protect women and the unborn.”

His decision to call another special session gives lawmakers 30 more days to push the bill through. Which basically means Davis’s 12-hour speech (with no bathroom breaks, food breaks, sitting breaks, going off topic breaks) may be purely symbolicNational Post
