Bill Clinton Believes Alien Life Exists… And Other News

Bill Clinton Alien

Yes, Bill Clinton believes in aliens.

In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, former President Bill Clinton admitted that soon after becoming president, he had his aides research Area 51, the Nevada military facility, “to make sure there was no alien down there.” Don’t worry though, Clinton assured Jimmy that he would have informed the public if he found something – but he also said he never had sexual relations with that woman, so who knows. Bill Clinton also admitted that he thinks aliens may exist, given the vast expanse of the universe. “If we were visited someday, I wouldn’t be surprised,” he said. “I just hope it’s not like Independence Day.” Yeah, Will Smith is getting too old for that shit and I definitely wouldn’t trust Jaden Smith with fate of the world. Eich MozillaWell, that was fast. After the dating website OKCupid temporarily blocked users from reaching the site via Mozilla browsers in protest of their new anti-gay CEO, all the negative publicity prompted Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich to step down. In interviews this week, Eich was questioned about his $1,000 contribution in support of California’s 2008 gay-marriage ban, Proposition 8, but insisted he didn’t “want to talk about [his] personal beliefs and doesn’t “believe they’re relevant.” Turns out they are relevant because he is no longer the CEO of Mozilla. Mozilla confirmed its cofounder’s resignation in a statement released on Thursday, which stated “Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn’t live up to it. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.” But don’t feel too bad for Eich – he can always get a job at Chick Fil A. The Guardian

Crimea McDonaldsCrimea might want to think twice about breaking away from Ukraine. McDonald’s just announced that it is ending end operations in the recently-annexed Crimean region. The company has offered to move staff from those outlets to its other locations within Ukraine, saying it will “transfer to any other McDonald’s restaurants in Ukraine preserving their positions, salaries and fees and paying to relocate employees and their families.” But there will be no more Happy Meals for the Crimeans after the McDonald’s outlets in Simferopol, Sevastopol, and Yalta shut down. On the plus side, they may go on to live longer, healthier lives. Oh no wait… they became part of Russia. Now they will become part of the dismal, vodka-induced life expectancy of 63 years for men and 76 years for women. Reuters

Morgue ShotWorst nightmare alert: grandma freezes to death in hospital morgue! While the grandmother was declared dead way back in 2010, the case, which was previously thrown out on statute of limitations grounds, was revived by an appeals court on Wednesday. According to her family, 80-year-old grandmother Maria de Jesus Arroyo died in a hospital morgue after she was prematurely declared dead, put into a body bag, and then into the freezer where she froze to death trying to escape. Arroyo was placed face-up in the hospital’s freezer but when she got to the mortuary days later, her body was face-down, the bag was half-way unzipped, and her face had a broken nose, bumps, and bruises. A pathologist concluded the woman was “alive in the hospital’s freezer, eventually woke up due to extreme cold,” and caused the injuries herself during a failed struggle to escape her “frozen tomb.” Thanks Obamacare! Putin DivorcedFirst Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, and now Vladimir and Lyudmila Putin. The Kremlin has announced that the Russian president’s divorced has been finalized and Putin is now free to marry whatever bear or Russian gymnast he desires. The couple announced last June that they would be breaking up amid rumours that Putin was putin it to former Olympic gymnast Alina Kabayeva, a torchbearer at the Sochi winter games. In a true Soviet-style attempt to rewrite history, references to Lyudmila have now been removed from Putin’s bio on the Kremlin website. But if Putin’s ever gets lonely post divorce, he can always annex another Ukrainian territory. NPR

Rand Paul Wants Everyone To Forget The Republican War On Women And Remember Monica Lewinsky

Monica Lewinsky Rand Paul

Refuting the Democrats’ claim that Republicans are launching a “war on women,” Rand Paul suggested people should take a closer look a Bill Clinton and his “predatory behaviour” towards Monica Lewinsky.

Forget the GOP’s repeated attacks on family planning funding and legal abortion, their controversial comments about women, rape and birth control, and their effort to remove contraception from health insurance plans! If any party is launching a war on women, it’s the Democrats because Bill Clinton had an affair nearly 20 years ago.

“The Democrats — one of their big issues is they’ve concocted this, ‘Republicans are committing a war on women,'” the Kentucky Republican said on NBC’s Meet The Press. “One of the work place laws and rules that I think are good is that bosses shouldn’t prey on young interns in their office. I think really the media seems to have given President Clinton a pass on this. He took advantage of a girl that was 20-years-old and an intern in his office. There is no excuse for that and that is predatory behavior.”

Well, Monica Lewinsky was actually 22 and held a paid position for most of her time at the White House. And I probably wouldn’t call public humiliation and the threat of impeachment a complete pass…. but go on…

“Someone who takes advantage of a young girl in their office — I mean really, and then they have the gall to stand up and say that Republicans are having a war on women? So yes, I think it’s a factor. Now it’s not Hillary’s fault. But it is a factor in judging Bill Clinton in history.”

So, Bill Clinton’s two decades old affair is irrelevent to the upcoming presidential campaign and Hillary should be judged on her own reputation and accomplishments? Nope, not in Rand Paul’s mind!

“It’s hard enough to separate one [Clinton] from the other,” Paul said, suggesting Bill Clinton’s behaviour will be forever linked to potential Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

So next time the GOP says something condescending or demeaning towards women (later today?), let’s all remember Monica Lewinsky. And while we’re at it, let’s all remember that time Rand Paul kidnapped a college classmate and forced her to take bongs hits.

Side note: Here’s a true story about a Rand Paul fan.

I was out and about in downtown Toronto one night (the last place you’d expect to find a hardcore Rand Paul enthusiast), and some guy approached my friend “Sara”. The discussion turned to politics and he began preaching about Rand Paul and all his terrific economic policies. BUT, because he was talking to a woman he had to explain them using makeup and jewelry analogies (no joke). I mean, there’s no way a woman could ever understand Economics 101 without a makeup analogy! Admittedly, he was on heroin and appeared to lack any critical insight, but I thought “this guy gets it.” He knows what it means to be a true Rand Paul enthusiast; it’s a not-so-clever combination of unrelenting free market values and condescending remarks to women.

U.N: Syria Death Toll at 93,000

U.N Syria Death

At least 93,000 people have been killed in Syria since the bloody conflict began nearly two years ago, according to the U.N.

Syria’s been a bloody mess for a while now and things seem to be getting worse. The killings related to the country’s uprising against President Bashar al-Assad have risen sharply as the fighting turns increasingly sectarian. According to U.N’s human rights body, the death toll of 93,000 represents a rise of more than 30,000 since the U.N last issued figures covering the period through November 2012. So on average, people are dying in Syria at a rate of 5,000 per month.

Navi Pillay, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, said “The constant flow of killings continues at shockingly high levels” and the number 93,000 “is most likely a minimum casualty figure. The true number of those killed is potentially much higher.”

And who is bearing the brunt of the killings? Civilians! 80 per cent of the deaths were men and the U.N has documented 1,700 children under the age of 10 killed. Hold on – it gets worse. The U.N also reports that children are being used as sniper targets and human shields by booth Assad’s army and the rebels. The UN special representative on children in conflict said it had received “verified reports that Syrian children are killed or injured in indiscriminate bombings, shot by snipers, used as human shields or victims of terror tactics.” And to top it off, there are reports that the main rebel group is recruiting child soldiers between the ages of 15 and 17 and child detainees as young as 14 were tortured like adults.

Pillay said the killings of at least 6,561 minors, including at least 1,729 children under 10 years old were documented, and that there were “well-documented cases of individual children being tortured and executed, and entire families, including babies, being massacred — which, along with this devastatingly high death toll, is a terrible reminder of just how vicious this conflict has become.”

The solution?

“The only answer is a negotiated political solution. Tragically, shamefully, nothing will restore the 93,000 or more individual lives already lost.” Pillay said, urging the international community to help end the conflict.

And Pillay isn’t the only one nudging Obama to act. At a private event with Senator John McCain on Tuesday night, Bill Clinton called Barack Obama a total wuss for not intervening. Comparing Obama’s inaction with his own choice to intervene in Kosovo, Clinton said:

“You just think how lame you’d be… suppose I had let a million people, two million people be refugees out of Kosovo, a couple hundred thousand people die, and they say, ‘You could have stopped this by dropping a few bombs. Why didn’t you do it?’ And I say, ‘because the House of Representatives voted 75% against it?’ You look like a total wuss, and you would be.”

I guess now that Obama is no longer his wife’s boss, the bromance between them is over.

Monica Lewinsky Isn’t the Only Thing Bill Clinton Regrets About His Presidency

Bill Clinton Gay Marriage

As the Supreme Court hears arguments for and against marriage equality over a two-day gay marriage marathon, Bill Clinton is left regretting his decision to sign the Defense of Marriage Act.

Today gay-marriage activists will argue that the Constitution protects the right to same-sex marriage and states don’t have the authority to reject this. California’s notorious Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage, will be at the forefront of these discussions.

On the second day the court will hear arguments for the Defense of Marriage Act, signed by Bill Clinton in September, 1996. What’s interesting is that Bill Clinton is now urging the Supreme Court to overturn the legislation he signed during his presidency.

While it is extremely rare for former Presidents to admit mistakes made in office, much less to disavow a major piece of legislation, Bill Clinton expressed his regret in an op-ed piece in the Washington Post earlier this month. In anticipation of the Supreme Court hearings, Clinton wrote:

“On March 27, DOMA will come before the Supreme Court, and the justices must decide whether it is consistent with the principles of a nation that honors freedom, equality and justice above all, and is therefore constitutional. As the president who signed the act into law, I have come to believe that DOMA is contrary to those principles and, in fact, incompatible with our Constitution.”

His explanation for signing the act back in 1996?

“Although that was only 17 years ago, it was a very different time.”

At the time Clinton felt he couldn’t risk it politically. Despite having a heavy LGBT support base, public opinion was largely anti-gay marriage and after the whole “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” fiasco, the administration kind of backed away from any substantive gay rights issues. When the Defense of Marriage Act came around, the administration felt their reelection would be in jeopardy if Clinton vetoed it.

After Clinton’s reelection, he eased up a bit , supporting legislation banning discrimination against gays and appointing openly gay Americans to important positions.  It took him a while, but he finally endorsed same-sex marriage in 2009.

Clinton’s turnaround mirrors larger changes in America where gay marriage has gone from being a radical idea to a mainstream one. Now it seems everyone is doing it. Coming out in support of gay marriage is the new coming out of the closet. Hillary did it, Obama did it (via Biden) and even Republicans are coming out (albeit at a slower pace).

I guess the lesson learned is… conform to public opinion in your first term then do whatever you want in your second term?
