Justice: Chicago Style… And Other News

Chicago Loop Shoot

There’s been a shooting in Chicago and for once it wasn’t in the south and it wasn’t gang related. Nope, this time it was a disgruntled downtown executive. Chicago must do something about their WASP on WASP violence!

The gunman, a 59-year-old executive of the ArrowStream, went to the company’s downtown office and demanded a one-on-meeting with the CEO – during which he pulled out a gun and shot the CEO in the head and stomach. So much for all those “no gun” stickers on downtown buildings… The company has been downsizing and has demoted a number of people. Apparently the gunman was pissed about his demotion. But just how upset was he at the demotion? Well, after critically wounding the CEO, the disgruntled executive shot and killed himself – so I’d say he was pretty upset. Chicago Tribune

TunnelsThere’s only one thing Benjamin Netanyahu hates more than Palestinian civilians – TUNNELS! Speaking before a cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv on Thursday, the Israeli Prime Minister decalred that “with or without a cease-fire” the Israeli military will NOT stop its operation in Gaza until all the tunnels constructed by Hamas militants have been destroyed. After air strikes began, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) discovered an extensive network of tunnels leading from Gaza into Israel that Hamas has been using to launch attacks. So far, Israel has destroyed most of the 32 tunnels it has found, but the job won’t be done until the entire tunnel network is destroyed. To aid “Operation Tunnel No More” (or “Operation Protective Edge” as they call it), Israel is calling up another 16,000 reserves. Meanwhile, the Palestinians have bigger things to worry about – well, not really. The Israeli offensive is pretty much the biggest thing they have to worry about. BBC

EbolaEven worse than the reviews for the 1995 movie Outbreak is the latest Ebola outbreak in Liberia. West African leaders are stepping up emergency efforts in response to the worst-ever outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. Leaders have canceled travel plans and authorized measures to combat the disease – including house-to-house searches and the deployment of the army and the police. Liberia announced it will close some of its schools and is even considering taking the drastic step of quarantining some communities. The country also ordered all nonessential government workers to 30-day compulsory leave. The World Health Organization said the death toll in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and now Nigeria has risen to 729 from 672. Plus, things have gotten so serious that the Peace Corps said it will be withdrawing its 340 volunteers from the three countries most affected by the virus. You know things are getting bad when white people start fleeing the country… New York Times

Seattle potPot smokers of Seattle rejoice! A Seattle police officer, who was found to have single-handedly dished out roughly 80 percent of the ‘smoking marijuana in public’ tickets issued this year, has been reassigned. The unnamed officer, who referred to Washington’s voter-approved changes to marijuana laws as “silly”, attached notes to the tickets including one in which he noted he had flipped a coin to decide whether to issue the citation. The Seattle Police Department’s first biannual report also revealed that African Americans in Seattle were ticketed disproportionately to their population for using pot in public. About 36 percent of the tickets were handed out to black people, who make up just 8 percent of the city’s population. A cop with a vendetta against black people and pot smokers? Seems about right. ginsbergParents Male Justices just don’t understand! In a wide-ranging interview with Yahoo’s Katie Couric, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg reaffirmed her criticism of the recent Hobby Lobby decision and said that five of her male counterparts on the court have “a blind spot” when it comes to women’s issues. After noting that all three female justices were in the minority in the recent Hobby Lobby decision, Couric asked Ginsburg if the five male justices in the majority truly understood their decision, to which Ginsburg responded, “I would have to say, no.” But on the bright side, Ginsburg said she expects the decision to be overturned one day. Perhaps the day Antonin Scalia dies? MSNBC

Current Event Cat of the Day: Happy Fourth of July Chiraq!

Current Event Cat - CHicago Fourth of July

For those of you celebrating the Fourth of July in Chicago this year, those weren’t fireworks you heard – they were gunshots.

The Fourth of July weekend was a bloody one in Chicago, or Chiraq as it is *affectionately* referred to. In total, at least 82 people were shot, 14 of them fatally, during the holiday weekend. So much for those strict gun controls…

The Fourth of July fireworks/gunshots kicked off on Thursday afternoon when two women were shot as they sat outside a two-flat within a block of Garfield Park. By Saturday morning the number had shot up to 36 people, including five who were shot by the police. But the most violent stretch of gun violence happened between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 3:30 a.m. Monday when four people were killed and at least another 26 wounded.

Most victims were in their late teens and 20s, although a 66-year-old woman was grazed in the head as she walked up the steps of her porch on the Far South Side. Many of the long weekend’s shootings occurred on the South Side, clustered in the notoriously gang-ridden neighborhoods of Englewood, Roseland, Gresham and West Pullman. So don’t worry – Reagan and the cats were safe. Although the cats may be suffering from some PTSD from the fireworks…

Ever since Chiraq was named the Murder Capital of America, the Chicago Police Department has been pursuing a wide range of strategies to stem the violence, much of which is gang-related. So far, nothing seems to be working

“Going into a holiday weekend like this, we obviously had a plan— [the] plan included putting hundreds of more officers on the streets at the times that we needed them and in the places we needed them,” said Chicago Police superintendent Garry McCarthy. “What were the results? The results were a lot of shootings and a lot of murders unfortunately.”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has made reducing violence a top priority for his administration, was likely equally disappointed in the holiday violence. For now, Emanuel has declined to comment on the weekend shootings – at least until he can find something to blame it on. Illegal gun proliferation? Gang culture? Insufficient police presence? Meh, just blame it on the NRA and move on.

Remind Me Never to Get Arrested in Chicago…

Chicago Cops Beat Salon Owner

A 32-year-old Chicago woman filed a federal lawsuit last week accusing local police officers of committing a hate crime by spewing out racially charged comments while raiding her tanning salon last year.

Filmed by a security camera during a Chicago Police vice raid at the Copper Tan and Spa last summer, the video shows a Chicago police officer hit a handcuffed, kneeling woman in the head. The footage also contains audio of another Chicago cop screaming at 32-year-old Jianqing “Jessica” Klyzek and refusing to believe her when she tells him she is a U.S. citizen.

“You’re not f*cking American,” one officer can be heard yelling. “I’ll put you in a UPS box and send you back to wherever the f*ck you came from.”

“I’m a citizen, OK?” Klyzek says.

“No you’re not,” he responds. “No, you’re not a citizen. No, you’re not! No, you’re not! You’re here on our borrowed time. So mind your f*cking business before I shut this whole f*cking place down. And I’ll take this place and then whoever owns it will f*cking kill you because they don’t care about you, OK? I’ll take this building. You’ll be dead and your family will be dead.”

At one point, an officer can be heard asking to use his Taser on the 110 pound, 5-foot-2 Klyzek — a naturalized U.S. citizen who emigrated from China.

“Can I just Tase her? F*ck it. I can Tase her 10 f*cking times.”

Klyzek, admittedly an uncooperative arrestee, was subsequently charged with aggravated battery for allegedly scratching and biting the officers who arrested her. The charges were eventually thrown out but now it’s Klyzek’s time to shine. Klyzek sued the cops and the city, accusing the officers of a hate crime, excessive force and attempting a cover-up by framing her. Results are pending… but judge for yourself:

According to a police report, the initial raid was prompted when an undercover officer was allegedly offered a sex act by a masseuse in a back room. Well, after the incident I’m pretty sure the salon won’t be offering cops sexual pleasures anymore – so problem solved! Good work Chicago PD!

WTF Illinois? The Republican House Candidate Who Said Autism and Tornadoes Were the Result of God’s Anger Over Gay Marriage Just Won Her Primary

Susanne Atanus GOP Candidate

Primary voters handed a narrow victory to Susanne Atanus, a GOP candidate who blames autism, dementia, and tornadoes on abortion and same-sex marriage.

Atanus was one of two Republicans lining up to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) for her seat representing the 9th District of Illinois, but during the lead up to the primary vote, Atanus let out a spew of verbal diarrhea, that prompted the state’s Republican Party to sever ties with the 55-year-old candidate.

“I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first,” Atanus told the Daily Herald.

“God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions,” Atanus continued, adding that diseases such as autism and dementia are punishment for legalized abortion and gay rights.

Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it’s in our military it will weaken our military. We need to respect God.”

After her controversial comments, not even Illinois Republican Chairman Jack Dorgan wanted to be associated with her. He urged her to drop out of the race, but Atanus ignored the party leader’s call for her withdrawal, and ended up winning the primary race without the backing of the Illinois Republican Party. How???

Well, at least the race was tight. Her primary opponent, Republican David Earl Williams III, received 12,012 votes compared to Atanus’ 12,447 votes. 30-year-old Williams wasn’t exactly a dream candidate either. He’s currently fighting a judge’s order to attend anger management classes and undergo a mental health assessment following a domestic violence dispute.

Considering a Republican hasn’t won the 9th district in over 60 years, Rep. Jan Schakowsky probably doesn’t care one way or another who won. But I suppose it will be nice to win with 70% of the vote against this crazy woman instead of only getting 60% against a slightly more reasonable candidate/domestic abuser – takes a bit of the pressure off.

Chicago GOP Candidate Knows the True Cause of Autism and Dementia

Susanne Atanus Autism

Not to let British politician David Silvester have all the fun, Susanne Atanus, a Republican candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in Illinois, says autism and dementia are punishments from God for the gay rights movement and abortions.

Wait a minute… autism isn’t caused by vaccines? Jenny McCarthy is going to be pissed.

Susanne Atanus, one of two Republicans lining up to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) for her seat representing the 9th District of Illinois, let out the crazy during an interview with the Daily Herald this week.

“I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first,” Atanus began in the taped portion of the segment.

Yikes. No wonder she has two failed runs for Congress on her belt. Oh well, at least she’ll always have her looks… oh wait. I wonder what she did to receive that punishment from God?

Considering a Republican hasn’t won the 9th district in over 60 years, I guess Atanus assumed she could say whatever she wanted, knowing she was going down in defeat anyways – barring a miracle from God. But the Illinois GOP is pretty peeved Atanus is making the rest of them look extra insane.

Illinois Republican Chairman Jack Dorgan urged Atanus to slowly step away from the party, saying:

“The offensive statements by Susanne Atanus have no place in the modern political debate, and she has no place on the ballot as a Republican. Her candidacy is neither supported nor endorsed by the leaders of our party, and she should withdraw from the race immediately.”

Meanwhile, Atanus’ primary opponent David Earl Williams III is rubbing his hands together with glee watching the scandal go down. Barely able to contain himself during the Daily Herald’s joint GOP candidate interviews, the slightly more moderate candidate began to look better and better by the second. And that’s no easy feat considering a judge recently ordered him to undergo a mental-health evaluation and anger-management classes.
