Donald Sterling Turns Apology into PR Nightmare

Donald Sterling Apology

While attempting to apologize for his racist comments, the Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling dug himself deeper into a public-image nightmare.

In a PR nightmare of an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper last night, Donald Sterling attempted to apologize for the racist remarks that have turned him into the villain of the NBA. The 80-year-old, speaking to Anderson Cooper in his first television interview since the crisis broke, insisted he wasn’t racist and asked forgiveness for his “one mistake.”

“I’m a good member who made a mistake and I’m apologizing and I’m asking for forgiveness,” he said. “Am I entitled to one mistake, am I after 35 years? I mean, I love my league, I love my partners. Am I entitled to one mistake? It’s a terrible mistake, and I’ll never do it again.”

I’m pretty sure there was more than “one mistake” – the million dollar housing discrimination lawsuit comes to mind – but at least Donald Sterling is stepping up and taking responsibility for his words.

Or maybe not…

Sterling says he was “baited” into using racist language by V. Stiviano, the mistress/professional archivist who made the original recording.

“She would always use the word ‘black,’ ” Sterling said of Stiviano.

“I used her words,” Sterling continued, later adding: “I don’t know why the girl had me say those things.”

Okay, so he didn’t take full responsibility, but at least he didn’t unleash anymore racist or offensive comments, right?

During the interview, Donald Sterling decided to unleash a searing attack on Magic Johnson as well as wealthy African Americans.

“What has he done, big Magic Johnson, what has he done?”

“He acts so holy,” Sterling said. “He made love to every girl in every city in America, and he had AIDS, and when he had those AIDS I went to my synagogue and I prayed for him, I hope he could live and be well. I didn’t criticize him. I could have. Is he an example for children?”

“What kind of a guy goes to every city, has sex with every girl, then he catches HIV. Is that someone we want to respect, and tell our kids about? I think he should be ashamed of himself,” Sterling continued after Anderson Cooper corrected him, explaining that Johnson was HIV positive but did not have “full-blown AIDS.”

“I think he should go into the background. But what does he do for the black people? He doesn’t do anything,” the NBA villain added.

According to Sterling, it might be Magic Johnson’s race that impairs his ability to give back to the community.

“Jews, when they get successful, they will help their people,” said Sterling. “Some of the African Americans, they don’t want to help anyone.”

Then, perhaps to distract viewers from his own racism, Sterling accused Anderson Cooper of being the more racist one of the two.

“I think you have more of a plantation mentality than I do—you’re more of a racist than I am!”

Huh. So it turns out you don’t need a leaked tape to make Donald Sterling look bad, you just have to put him on CNN.

CNN Journalists Get Arrested Sneaking Into World Trade Center

CNN Journalists Caught

Oh CNN… In a sad attempt to get some of their investigative journalism cred back, the cable news network sent two journalists to break into the World Trade Center for a story about people who were actually able to break in.

The two CNN journalists were filming a report on recent security breaches at the World Trade Center – one involving four men sneaking in and parachuting off the skyscraper and the other involving a 16-year-old boy sneaking up to the top to take some photos. In both those cases, the trespassers bypassed security and snuck in through a hole in the fence during off-hours.  The CNN journalists were not so clever in their attempt to recreate the break-ins.

Shortly after lunch last Tuesday, Yon Pomrenze, 35, and Connor Fieldman Boals, 26, tried to talk their way past security guards into the heavily guarded construction site while holding their video gear. When schmoozing the security guys didn’t work, they attempted to climb over the perimeter fence – twice. No luck there. For their third attempt they tried to force their way through an electronic gate, where they were eventually caught by the police and arrested on criminal trespass, obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct charges.

So instead of sneaking in in the middle of the night, they decided to go in broad daylight and tip off security about their plans.  There goes CNN’s pultizer prize-winning headline: “Look How Easy it is to Sneak Into the World Trade Center!”

Apparently the two CNN reporters thought if a 16-year-old was able to get in, then so should they, said Joseph Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police Department.

“He had enough sense to try it at 4 o’clock in the morning,” he said of the 16-year-old.

“This is very wasteful of valuable law-enforcement time and energy,” Pentagelo added.

But on the bright side, at least he knows that the millions of dollars spent on security measures for the World Trade Center are semi-useful – they won’t keep 16-year-olds and parachuting thrill seekers out, but they will make the WTC CNN-free.

CNN Reporter Randi Kaye Gets Contact High in Colorado

Randi Kaye COntact High

In CNN’s Gone to Pot series, reporter Randi Kaye did some “extensive research” on Colorado’s recent legalization of recreational marijuana and ended up in a bus full of stoners with a contact high.

And by extensive research, I mean Randi Kaye rode around all day in a limo with some stereotypical stoners in one of Colorado’s newly legal pot tours.  But it was all worth it because Kaye was able to bring the viewers some breaking news: being trapped in a confined space with a bunch of stoners smoking weed can give you a contact high.

After the cannabis tour bus (cannabus?) group started demanding tacos, Kaye’s investigative journalism came to an end and she went on to tell Anderson Cooper all about her contact high.

“How extensive was your research in the back of that limo?” CNN anchor Anderson Cooper asked from back in the studio.

“It was top notch, we did very extensive research I have to tell you,” a smiley Kaye says.

My brain was a little fuzzy by the time I got out of there, I wasn’t thinking right and I couldn’t remember even some of the questions I wanted to ask in the interview, which has never happened to me. And I found things to be really funny, much funnier than I normally do,” she added.

“But it was just a contact high. I just want to make that clear. Is that correct?” Cooper asked.

“Yes it was a just a contact high,” she confirmed.

Skip to 4:30 to see Randi Kaye get a little giggly and Anderson Cooper get a little condescending.
