UN Official: Better to Put Down the Fork and Pick Up a Cigarette

Food Tax Cigarette

According to an investigator with the United Nations, unhealthy diets pose a greater risk to global health than cigarettes and governments should move fast to tax harmful food products.

Olivier de Schutter, special rapporteur on right to food, told the World Health Organization’s annual summit that governments should launch negotiations on a global pact to tackle the obesity epidemic.

“Unhealthy diets are now a greater threat to global health than tobacco. Just as the world came together to regulate the risks of tobacco, a bold framework convention on adequate diets must now be agreed,” he said.

Two years ago, in another report to the rights council, de Schutter called for similar action, encouraging governments to tax unhealthy products, regulate fats and sugars, crack down on advertising for junk food, and rethink agricultural subsidies that make unhealthy food cheaper. But apparently nothing happened and people just kept eating.

“It has been two years since my report on nutrition and the right to food, and ten years since the World Health Organization (WHO) launched its Global Strategy on Diet Physical Activity and Health,” he said. “Yet obesity continues to advance—and diabetes, heart disease and other health complications along with it. The warning signs are not being heard.”

Will anything change this time around? Probably not, but Consumers International and the World Obesity Federation are on WHO’s side, calling for greater regulation of the food industry. The two organizations said governments around the world should impose compulsory rules for the food and drink industry, similar to tobacco regulations. These rules could include pictures on food packaging of damage caused by obesity (similar to those on cigarette packets), reducing the levels of salt, saturated fat and sugar in food, improving food served in hospitals and schools, imposing stricter advertising controls, and educating the public about healthy eating.

Apparently global deaths due to obesity and general fatness rose from 2.6 million in 2005 to 3.4 million in 2010. Still, are fatty foods really worse than cigarettes? Just think of that awful stale cigarette smell… then again, a 500lbs man with Taco Bell gas probably smells just as bad. Verdict: it’s a tie.

Restaurant Gives Customers What They Want: More Skin

 Potato Skin

After a customer posted a review on Urban Spoon demanding the servers show more skin, the Atomic Grill in Morgantown, West Virginia decided to give the customer what he wanted: more skin.

You want more skin? I’ll give you more skin… potato skins…

The restaurant took action by offering a potato skin special for $7, and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information Services.

Atomic Grill Owner“We took offense to the review and wanted to flip it in a positive way,” Atomic Grill owner Daniel McCawley explained.

“It was brutish. I was upset. I’m a father of a 12-year-old girl and I’ve got five sisters,” McCawley said. “The way that women are treated is pretty personal as far as I’m concerned.”

The post on Urban Spoon has been removed, but the Atomic Grill hopes the potato skin special educates people, raises awareness, and makes the anonymous reviewer look like an even bigger dick.

“If you have a minute, have some potato skins, try some fresh, local barbecue and give to a good cause. It’s important to us, it should be important to the community,” McCawley said.

And if potato skins aren’t enough skin for you, take a drive over to Hooters. Instead of potato skins and donations to rape crisis centers, Hooters offers scantily clad servers and rape jokes. On Saturday, a rape joke showed up on Hooters’ official Facebook page with the caption “EXHIBIT A: The proof that she was asking for it your Honour”.

Hooters Joke

After the restaurant was called out for the offensive joke, Hooters claimed their Facebook page was hacked and quickly took the picture down. But since the photo isn’t too far off from the kind of pictures the restaurant usually posts, you’re probably better off eating at the Atomic Grill.

McDonald’s Has Some Great Advice For Employees: Return Holiday Gifts to Get Out Of Debt And Stop Complaining

McResource Employees

McDonald’s knows how hard it is for employees to make ends meet – they’ve seen their $7.25 an hour paychecks. So the fast food giant set up a help website for McDonald’s employees called McResource.

The website Low Pay Is Not OK posted a few screenshots from the McResource site, which offers the following tips to employees:

  • You may want to also consider returning some of your unopened purchases that may not seem as appealing as they did.
  • Selling some of your unwanted possessions on eBay or Craigslist could bring in some quick cash.
  • Breaking food into smaller pieces often results in eating less and still feeling full.
  • Stop complaining. Stress hormones rise by 15% after 10 minutes of complaining.
  • At least two vacations a year can cut heart attack risk by 50%.

So can avoiding McDonald’s food – even if you do chop it up into smaller deep-fried pieces. Anyways, I’ve gotten more useful information from my cats, but McDonald’s is sticking to its McResource advice.

“This is an attempt by an outside organization to undermine a well-intended employee assistance resource website by taking isolated portions out of context,” a McDOnald’s spokeswoman wrote. “The McResource website has helped countless employees by providing them with a variety of information and resources on topics ranging from health and wellness to stress and financial management.”

McDonald’s was also criticized earlier this year for the sample budget it provided to employees which suggested picking up a second job and making do without heat. But at least they haven’t set up an employee food drive for their own employees… Walmart.

The Rob Ford Reality Show, Ford Nation, is Cancelled… And Other News

Rob Ford Nation

Times are tough for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his Ford Nation.

Just one day after having his mayoral powers stripped by the Toronto City Council, Sun News Network cancelled his reality show Ford Nation after just one episode. Ford Nation’s debut episode (and I guess the series finale) aired on Monday night and featured the crack-smoking mayor and his brother Doug, who sits on the city council. The hour long show was basically just the Fords going back and forth about the media’s obsession with the mayor and his crack-smoking, p*ssy eating, drunk-driving ways. But even that was not enough to draw more than 155,000 viewers and Ford Nation was quickly sacked. Hollywood Reporter

Burger King IndiaIndians are about to get a little fatter and a little more American. Burger King has just announced that it will be expanding its franchises into India. Ever since the first McDonald’s opened in 1996, fast food places have been popping up all over the country – and Burger King wants a piece of the action. “India is a market with huge potential for Burger King restaurants and we have the chance to offer the unique Burger King brand proposition to its consumers with our own local twist to the menu,” said Elias Diaz Sese, president of BK AsiaPac Pte. Ltd. No word yet on whether the fast food giant will sell its signature Whopper or other beef burgers. When McDonalds broke into the market they dropped beef and pork from menus, in keeping with the religious practices of Hindus and Muslims, and added such India specific items: the McVeggie sandwich and the Spicy Paneer Wrap. Authentic Indian food – yum! Wall Street Journal

Afghan DealIs the war in Afghanistan coming to an end? No, it’s the war that never ends, it just goes on and on my friend, some people started fighting it not knowing what it was, and they’ll continue fighting it forever just because…no one is pulling out the troops – not even after 2014. The US and Afghanistan have reached a security agreement about life after 2014. Well, they haven’t so much as reached an agreement as they’ve agreed to the text of a security agreement – the real thing still needs to be drafted up and officially accepted by Afghan leaders and the Afghan parliament.  The approval of the security agreement would pave the way for a small number of Americans troops to remain on the ground in Afghanistan beyond 2014 – as long as they are given immunity from Afghan courts. Otherwise, they are out of there! But according to White House spokesman Jay Carney, these remaining soldiers would have a very limited mission. “The war in Afghanistan will end next year, as the president has promised,” Carney said. “The combat mission will be over.” CNN

Texas Abortion LawThe Texas abortion law is here to stay… for now. The U.S. Supreme Court refuses to stop a restrictive abortion law in Texas, meaning the law, which opponents say have led more than a third of the state’s clinics to stop providing abortions, will remain in effect until a planned appeal hearing in January. “This is good news for the unborn and for women,” Texas Gov. Rick Perry said after the decision. Minus the women with unwanted pregnancies… The restrictive law, which will effectively close abortion clinics in much of the state, has sparked a fierce debate – mainly between Gov. Rick Perry and State Senator Wendy Davis who filibustered the bill for 11 hours in June. USA Today

SmartiesSmarties are the new gateway drug – or Rockets if you’re from Canada. A third grader was suspended after he crushed up some Smarties/Rockets into powder and snorted them. Nine-year-old Demitri Santiago got the idea from watching another classmate sniffing candy powder. The third grader’s mom chalked up the incident to childhood curiosity but also wants to warn other parents about the dangerous new trend. “Anything going up the nose and especially candy – anything is terribly dangerous,” she said.
