Current Event Cat of the Day: Happy Fourth of July Chiraq!

Current Event Cat - CHicago Fourth of July

For those of you celebrating the Fourth of July in Chicago this year, those weren’t fireworks you heard – they were gunshots.

The Fourth of July weekend was a bloody one in Chicago, or Chiraq as it is *affectionately* referred to. In total, at least 82 people were shot, 14 of them fatally, during the holiday weekend. So much for those strict gun controls…

The Fourth of July fireworks/gunshots kicked off on Thursday afternoon when two women were shot as they sat outside a two-flat within a block of Garfield Park. By Saturday morning the number had shot up to 36 people, including five who were shot by the police. But the most violent stretch of gun violence happened between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 3:30 a.m. Monday when four people were killed and at least another 26 wounded.

Most victims were in their late teens and 20s, although a 66-year-old woman was grazed in the head as she walked up the steps of her porch on the Far South Side. Many of the long weekend’s shootings occurred on the South Side, clustered in the notoriously gang-ridden neighborhoods of Englewood, Roseland, Gresham and West Pullman. So don’t worry – Reagan and the cats were safe. Although the cats may be suffering from some PTSD from the fireworks…

Ever since Chiraq was named the Murder Capital of America, the Chicago Police Department has been pursuing a wide range of strategies to stem the violence, much of which is gang-related. So far, nothing seems to be working

“Going into a holiday weekend like this, we obviously had a plan— [the] plan included putting hundreds of more officers on the streets at the times that we needed them and in the places we needed them,” said Chicago Police superintendent Garry McCarthy. “What were the results? The results were a lot of shootings and a lot of murders unfortunately.”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has made reducing violence a top priority for his administration, was likely equally disappointed in the holiday violence. For now, Emanuel has declined to comment on the weekend shootings – at least until he can find something to blame it on. Illegal gun proliferation? Gang culture? Insufficient police presence? Meh, just blame it on the NRA and move on.

Nothing Says the Fourth of July Like 69 Hotdogs… And Other News

Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July Americats!

And what’s more patriotic than competing in a hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July? NOTHING. The annual Fourth of July Nathan’s hot-dog eating contest took place on Coney Island today and two wieners winners emerged: six-time defending champing Joey Chestnut who downed 69 hotdogs and buns in 10 minutes for his seventh consecutive victory and Sonya “Black Widow” Thomas who shoved 36 3/4 hotdogs into her 100-pound frame to win the women’s title. It doesn’t get more American than overeating heavily processed food. U.S.A.! U.S.A.! Huffington Post

MandlaFamily Feud: Nelson Mandela style. While Nelson Mandela is slowing dying in a Pretoria hospital, his family is engulfed in an epic family fued – sadly one that is not hosted by Richard Dawson. Nelson Mandela’s eldest grandson Mandla (Mandla Mandela?) has accused his relatives of being vengeful and seeking to control the former South African president’s legacy. The fued started when Mandla ordered the transfer of three of Mandela’s children’s bodies from the nearby village of Qunu, where Mr. Mandela was raised, to his own compound in Mvezo, the village where Mr. Mandela was born. This was back in 2011. Last week family members took Mandla to court, saying he had moved the bodies without their knowledge or consent. Fast forward to Wednesday when the bodies were taken from their unmarked graves in Mvezo to a nearby hospital for DNA testing and then reburied in the Mandela family graveyard in Qunu. Question is – where will Mandela be buried? BBC News

Transgender Washroom DilemmaNo more transgendered bathroom confusion in California! Or maybe more confusion? A bill passed this week in California that would allow transgender children to choose sports teams and restrooms based on gender identity and not sex at birth. Supporters of the bill say the new law will protect transgender students from bullying and abuse. Oppenents of the bill say sexual shananigans are bound to happen such as young predators using an opposite-sex bathroom to victimize other students. To which Democratic state Sen. Ricardo Lara respondended: “To date there’s been no single reported incident of any misconduct. Let’s not confuse silly behavior issues with sensitive gender-identity issues.” The bill is now headed for Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk for a signature. CBS News

Ted Nugent for PresTed Nugent for president? This could be even better than the time Donald Trump thought he could run… Washed up rock star and gun enthusiast Ted Nugent says he’s considering running in 2016 and already has a campaign slogan: “Hi, I’m Ted Nugent. I have nine children from seven women, and I’m running for president.” Not bad. Nugent toyed with the idea of running for Michigan governor in 2006 and 2010 but now he’s looking to go bigger. “Things are just so wrong in the country now,” Nugent said. “And I know that my answers would make things wonderful, unless you just refuse to produce, and then I’d recommend that you move to Canada. Or Illinois.” Please don’t send us your castaways Ted. Washington Post
