Hillary & Joe: The Poorest 2016 Presidential Contenders Yet

Joe Biden Hillary

Not to be outdone by Hillary Clinton’s statement that she and Bill left the White House “dead broke” and “struggled” to pay mortgages on two multi-million-dollar houses, Joe Biden announced he’s so poor he doesn’t even have a savings account.

Last week Hillary caused a seizure over at Fox News when she commented that she and Bill Clinton were “dead broke” after leaving the White House. While it’s true that the Clintons were in debt when they left the White House ( mostly because of legal bills), since leaving they’ve more than $100 million thanks to speeches and book deals.

Republicans quickly pounced on the remarks, claiming Hillary doesn’t understand the working man’s struggle.

“I think she’s been out of touch with average people for a long time,” said Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus. “Whether she was flat broke or not is not the issue. It’s tone deaf to average people.”

Not wanting to be labeled the next Mitt Romney, Hillary quickly backpedaled on her comments.

“Let me just clarify that I fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans today,” she said in a Tuesday interview with Good Morning America. “It’s an issue that I’ve worked on and cared about my entire adult life. Bill and I were obviously blessed, we worked hard for everything we got in our lives and we have continued to work hard.”

But no one works harder than Joe Biden at appearing like the Avergage Joe. Trying to strike up a folksy connection to his audience at the White House Working Families Summit, Vice President Joe Biden reminded people that even though he’s wearing a “mildy expensive suit” now, he used to be the poorest member in Congress.

“Don’t hold it against me that I don’t own a single stock or bond,” Biden said. “I have no savings account but I got a great pension and I got a good salary. For real.”

For real? Well, not really. Biden’s financial disclosure for the year 2013, which was filed last month, shows that he has both a savings account and 11 different investment funds. Still, the vice president’s not “Hillary Clinton rich”. His reported net worth of less than $800,000 is far less than many of his colleagues in Congress and he was the poorest senator when he joined the Obama ticket in 2008. Lesson learned: You can’t out-everyman Joe Biden!

Karl Rove: Hillary Has Brain Damage… And Other News

Karl Rove and Hillary

Karl Rove suggests Hillary Clinton may have brain damage, and Karl Rove knows a thing or two about brain damage – he spent years working with George W. Bush.

Speaking at a conference last week, the Republican strategist said voters should press Hillary Clinton about her December 2012 hospitalization for a blood clot following a fall, because she is totally hiding something. “Thirty days in the hospital?” Karl Rove asked. “And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have a traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” A spokesperson for Clinton’s team responded that her health has been “100 per cent” following her three (not thirty) day hospitalization, adding, “Karl Rove has deceived the country for years, but there are no words for this level of lying.” Well at least Republicans have moved on from the idea that Hillary’s fall and ensuing blood clot was a fake illness made up to get out of testifying about Benghazi (which she later did). Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau holds a press conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday, June 5, 2013. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean KilpatrickAbortions for all! Canadian Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau says all candidates running for nomination to represent the Liberal Party in 2015 will have to support the party’s pro-choice position. So… you don’t have a choice – you have to be pro-choice? Exactly! Unless you’re already an MP, since they were vetted under a different nomination process.”I have made it clear that future candidates need to be completely understanding that they will be expected to vote pro-choice on any bills,” Trudeau said. “The existing MPs … will be respected to a certain extent in their choices, but our position as a party is we do not reopen that debate.” Well it’s great that Trudeau has declared the Liberal Party 100% pro-choice, a policy that was already decided back in the 1980s. Maybe next he’ll declare the party 100% against the Soviet Union. CBC News

Clay AikenVictory! Clay Aiken beat a dead man in North Carolina’s Democratic congressional primary. Or… did Clay Aiken kill his Democratic rival…? The former American Idol star’s dream of becoming North Carolina’s most vocal congressperson may soon become a reality. Aiken was in the middle of a hotly contested race to become the Democratic nominee, but before the official count could be released, his rival, Keith Crisco, 71, died from injuries suffered from a fall at his home on Monday. On Tuesday, an unofficial vote count showed that Aiken received more than the 40 percent needed to win and Crisco’s campaign manager said he was willing to concede loss to Aiken. Aiken will now go on to battle it out against Republican Rep Renee Ellmers in the general election, who is best known for NEEDING her paycheck more than government furloughed employees. FOX News

Turkey mine explosionAs anyone who’s ever watched Zoolander knows, coal mining is a dirty and dangerous job – and it just got a whole lot worse for hundreds of coal miners in Turkey. An explosion at a mine in western Turkey has left 157 workers dead and 75 injured. The blast, followed by a fire, started during a change in shifts, leading to some uncertainty over how many people are still trapped underground. According to Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, 787 people were inside the coal mine in Soma at the time of the accident. Many reportedly managed to escape, while others suffered from suffocation and burns. The death toll continues to rise, but hopefully it won’t rival Turkey’s worst mining disaster – a 1992 gas explosion that killed 263 workers near the Black Sea port of Zonguldak. BBC News

The-Santa-MariaIn fourteen hundred and ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue. And in two thousand and fourteen its remains will now be seen. Archaeologists believe a shipwreck found off the north coast of Haiti could be the 500-year-old remains of Christopher Columbus’s famous ship, the Santa Maria. More than five centuries after the ship was abandoned in the Caribbean, marine investigator Barry Clifford is 99.999% certain he’s found it. “All the geographical, underwater topography and archeological evidence strongly suggests that this wreck is Columbus’s famous flagship, the Santa Maria,” Clifford said. “I am confident that a full excavation of the wreck will yield the first-ever detailed marine archeological evidence of Columbus’s discovery of America.” Yeah, well Christopher Columbus was pretty confident he could make it by boat to Asia, so you never know. Hillary Clinton Dodges a Shoe… And Other News

Shoe at Clinton

What do Hillary Clinton and George W have in common? No, not a love of painting. Both have had a shoe thrown at them.

On Thursday the former Secretary of State was forced to dodge a flying shoe that was hurled at her while she was speaking at an Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries meeting at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Clinton played it off and cracked a few jokes while the woman suspected of throwing the shoe was taken into custody and is expected to be arrested. Hillary Clinton is no stranger to random shoe attacks. In 2012, while on an official visit to Egypt, Clinton’s motorcade was pelted with shoes and tomatoes by protesters chanting “Monica, Monica”. But it was George W who started the shoe throwing craze back in 2008 during a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Palace in Baghdad, Iraq. A journalist threw a shoe at the then President Bush yelling “This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, you dog!” He then threw the second shoe and shouted “This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq!!” So… Hillary got off easy this time? The Guardian

Kathleen-Sebelius-and-ObamaI guess that glitchy Obamacare rollout finally caught up with her. Kathleen Sebelius is resigning after five years of serving as the Health and Human Services secretary – aka the person in charge of overseeing the Affordable Care Act rollout. The official word is that say Sebelius, 65, chose to resign and was not forced out, it was clear that the Obama administration wasn’t super impressed with her handling of the health-care overhaul. Still, although she weathered some heavy criticism over the rocky launch, the program did meet its major milestone – the successful enrollment of 7 million Americans in health-insurance exchanges. FedEx-bus-crashIn the worst FedEx accident to happen since Tom Hanks’ plane went down in Castaway, a FedEx truck struck a bus carrying prospective students for Humboldt State University in California on Thursday. The drivers of the bus and truck were killed along with three adult chaperones and five teenage students in the fiery crash that happened after the truck crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into the bus. “As we mourn the loss of those who died, we join all Californians in expressing our gratitude for the tireless work of the Red Cross and emergency personnel who responded bravely to this terrible tragedy,” said Governor Jerry Brown in a statement. Forgive me PopeForgive us for fondling your children. Please? Pope Francis asked for forgiveness Friday from people who were sexually abused by priests, and vowed that there will be no going back in the church’s fight to protect children. “I feel compelled to personally take on all the evil which some priests […] to personally ask for forgiveness for the damage they have done for having sexually abused children,” he said. But don’t worry – the pope also said number of priests behind the abuses were “quite few in number … compared to the number of all the priests.” Well, I would hope so! USA Today

Britain Egypt JournalistsThe al-Jazeera trial has been denounced a “joke” – except not a very funny joke because the three al-Jazeera journalists are still being charged with terrorism and have been held since December. The three reporters deny the charges of aiding members of a “terrorist organization” and the case has been condemned by rights groups and media around the world – well, except for in Egypt where they are being held. At their latest hearing, prosecutors videos that had nothing to do with the case. While material from one journalist, Peter Greste’s, laptop was examined – which included a news conference from Kenya, a documentary he made in Somalia and some of his parents’ holiday photos – Greste shouted from inside his court cage that the trial was a mockery and an embarrassment for Egypt. Peter Greste’s brother Mike agreed, saying the trial was “like a TV sit-com” and would have been very funny – if Peter and his colleagues had not already been in jail for more than 100 days. Hitler MugsSelling mugs with Hitler’s face on them: good idea or bad idea? Turns out, bad idea. A furniture store in western Germany “accidentally” sold 200 coffee mugs bearing a portrait of Adolf Hitler. The ceramic cups, which were “mistakenly” ordered from China, feature a faint image of a Nazi-era postage stamp with Hitler’s profile on it, postmarked with a swastika stamp. The Zurbrueggen furniture chain apologised for the “terrible” mistake, which it blamed on “a stupid chain of unfortunate circumstances”. “Our staff is devastated by this very unfortunate error,” Christian Zurbrueggen, co-owner of the Zurbrueggen chain store said. “We have been in touch with the manufacturer … to prevent further distribution of these nasty cups.” Fun fact: displaying swastikas and other Nazi symbols is illegal in Germany. The chain has since destroyed the unsold cups but for those lucky 200 white supremacists who snagged some Hitler cups, try not to display them – it’s illegal. NBC News

Michele Bachmann: Obama Rode To Victory On A Wave Of White Guilt

Bachmann White Guilt

Michele Bachmann has the 2016 presidential election all figured out. The former presidential hopeful believes Barrack Obama was elected president was “because of guilt” – white guilt to be exact – and that’s something Hillary Clinton just can’t compete with.

Speaking to conservative columnist Cal Thomas, Bachmann says that the “guilt” that Americans felt before electing Obama won’t benefit a female candidate for president.

“I think there was a cachet about having an African-American president because of guilt,” Bachmann said.

“People don’t hold guilt for a woman,” she added.

Apparently the white guilt was strong enough to elect Obama in 2008 and in 2012. Americans felt very guilty.

Unfortunately former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won’t have that advantage in 2016. Not that it would matter anyway, because Bachmann, who is retiring from Congress after her current term, insists America “isn’t ready for a woman president” – a fact that she realized after running for president in 2012.

While voters will vote for women for every other elected office in the country, Bachmann doesn’t “think there is a pent-up desire” to see a woman in the Oval Office – especially one who is “the godmother of Obamacare” and “has a real problem when it comes to Benghazi”.

Plus, after having spent two decades in the public eye, Bachmann feels Clinton just won’t have the appeal that Obama first did. When Obama came along, she said, he was “new and different” (read: not white), Clinton… not so much.

As crazy as Michele Bachmann sounds, she is right about one thing – some women just aren’t fit to be president. Bachmann being the prime example…

Rand Paul Wants Everyone To Forget The Republican War On Women And Remember Monica Lewinsky

Monica Lewinsky Rand Paul

Refuting the Democrats’ claim that Republicans are launching a “war on women,” Rand Paul suggested people should take a closer look a Bill Clinton and his “predatory behaviour” towards Monica Lewinsky.

Forget the GOP’s repeated attacks on family planning funding and legal abortion, their controversial comments about women, rape and birth control, and their effort to remove contraception from health insurance plans! If any party is launching a war on women, it’s the Democrats because Bill Clinton had an affair nearly 20 years ago.

“The Democrats — one of their big issues is they’ve concocted this, ‘Republicans are committing a war on women,'” the Kentucky Republican said on NBC’s Meet The Press. “One of the work place laws and rules that I think are good is that bosses shouldn’t prey on young interns in their office. I think really the media seems to have given President Clinton a pass on this. He took advantage of a girl that was 20-years-old and an intern in his office. There is no excuse for that and that is predatory behavior.”

Well, Monica Lewinsky was actually 22 and held a paid position for most of her time at the White House. And I probably wouldn’t call public humiliation and the threat of impeachment a complete pass…. but go on…

“Someone who takes advantage of a young girl in their office — I mean really, and then they have the gall to stand up and say that Republicans are having a war on women? So yes, I think it’s a factor. Now it’s not Hillary’s fault. But it is a factor in judging Bill Clinton in history.”

So, Bill Clinton’s two decades old affair is irrelevent to the upcoming presidential campaign and Hillary should be judged on her own reputation and accomplishments? Nope, not in Rand Paul’s mind!

“It’s hard enough to separate one [Clinton] from the other,” Paul said, suggesting Bill Clinton’s behaviour will be forever linked to potential Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

So next time the GOP says something condescending or demeaning towards women (later today?), let’s all remember Monica Lewinsky. And while we’re at it, let’s all remember that time Rand Paul kidnapped a college classmate and forced her to take bongs hits.

Side note: Here’s a true story about a Rand Paul fan.

I was out and about in downtown Toronto one night (the last place you’d expect to find a hardcore Rand Paul enthusiast), and some guy approached my friend “Sara”. The discussion turned to politics and he began preaching about Rand Paul and all his terrific economic policies. BUT, because he was talking to a woman he had to explain them using makeup and jewelry analogies (no joke). I mean, there’s no way a woman could ever understand Economics 101 without a makeup analogy! Admittedly, he was on heroin and appeared to lack any critical insight, but I thought “this guy gets it.” He knows what it means to be a true Rand Paul enthusiast; it’s a not-so-clever combination of unrelenting free market values and condescending remarks to women.

California GOP Orders the KFC Hillary Special: 2 Fat Thighs, 2 Small Breasts and a Left Wing

California GOP Buttons

The California GOP convention that promised to “rebuild the party from the ground up” and address the concerns of women took a slightly different route and decided to hand out sexist buttons insulting Hillary Clinton.

After a disastrous election cycle that included Republican candidates discussing “legitimate rape” and labeling pregnancies resulting from rape a “gift from God,” the Republican National Committee urged the GOP to take a step back and really think about women’s issues. After all, they have binders full of them – why not try to win a few of their votes? So the RNC encouraged Republican candidates to “use language that addresses concerns that are on women’s minds in order to let them know we are fighting for them.

Organizers of the California GOP’s fall convention took this message to heart and set up panels at the convention which included “Women on the Right,” “California Federation of Republican Women,” and “Grassroots 101: Latino Engagement.”

So far so good. Then came the buttons…

Buttons were handed out that read “KFC Hillary Special: 2 Fat Thighs, 2 Small Breasts … Left Wing.”

Sigh. It didn’t do the Australian Liberal Party any good when they did the same thing to Julia Gillard and her big red box, and it certainly won’t do the California GOP any good.

After San Francisco Chronicle reporter Carla Marinucci tweeted the picture of the “popular” buttons, Republicans scrambled to remove them from the convention.

2016 will be an interesting election year…. And by interesting I mean super misogynistic. Just do everyone a favour, GOP, and remember this quote:

“You may not agree with a woman, but to criticize her appearance — as opposed to her ideas or actions — isn’t doing anyone any favors, least of all you. Insulting a woman’s looks when they have nothing to do with the issue at hand implies a lack of comprehension on your part, an inability to engage in high-level thinking. You may think she’s ugly, but everyone else thinks you’re an idiot.”  – Erin Gloria Ryan

No More Texts from Hillary. Until 2016…?

Hillary Clinton Texts from Hillary

Hillary Clinton bids adieu to public life today, making way for John Kerry, who will replace Clinton as the secretary of state.  At least we’ll always have the memories of Texts from Hillary.

Let’s take a look of Hillary’s s.o.s journey:

After failing to get the Democratic nomination, Obama appointed Clinton as secretary of state, a plum job, but not quite the one she was expecting desperately wanting. But after four years as Obama’s secretary of state and America’s ambassador to the world, has left an overall positive mark on American foreign policy and has achieved sky high approval ratings.

Clinton devoted time to signatures issues, such as empowerment of women and girls, gay rights, third world development, health and Internet freedoms and lent her support to a wide range of new projects and organizations. She also oversaw a diplomatic opening to Burma and the difficult creation of the world’s newest country, South Sudan.

While certainly important causes, one could argue that the toughest foreign policy issues of the day — Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Arab-Israeli standoff — weren’t resolved during the four years. In fact, some got a lot worse. Although this is directly linked to Clinton, the lack of major diplomatic breakthroughs a la Kissinger or Marshall may limit her legacy.

One of the lowest moments in her diplomatic career, according to Clinton herself, was the attack in Benghazi, Libya, over which she has received harsh (and excessive) criticism from Republicans. The Benghazi incident also squashed the chances of Obama’s first choice for Clinton’s replacement, Susan Rice. The ambassador to the United Nations withdrew as a candidate after her comments regarding the Benghazi attack were widely criticized.

And now it’s John Kerry’s time to shine. Kerry was confirmed as secretary of state and Tuesday and has suggested that he would try to make some headway in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On top of that, Kerry gets to deal with the conflict in Syria, the turmoil on Egypt and deteriorating relations with Russia. Have fun with that… Maybe he’ll get a text from Hillary to help him out.
