WTF Illinois? The Republican House Candidate Who Said Autism and Tornadoes Were the Result of God’s Anger Over Gay Marriage Just Won Her Primary

Susanne Atanus GOP Candidate

Primary voters handed a narrow victory to Susanne Atanus, a GOP candidate who blames autism, dementia, and tornadoes on abortion and same-sex marriage.

Atanus was one of two Republicans lining up to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) for her seat representing the 9th District of Illinois, but during the lead up to the primary vote, Atanus let out a spew of verbal diarrhea, that prompted the state’s Republican Party to sever ties with the 55-year-old candidate.

“I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first,” Atanus told the Daily Herald.

“God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions,” Atanus continued, adding that diseases such as autism and dementia are punishment for legalized abortion and gay rights.

Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it’s in our military it will weaken our military. We need to respect God.”

After her controversial comments, not even Illinois Republican Chairman Jack Dorgan wanted to be associated with her. He urged her to drop out of the race, but Atanus ignored the party leader’s call for her withdrawal, and ended up winning the primary race without the backing of the Illinois Republican Party. How???

Well, at least the race was tight. Her primary opponent, Republican David Earl Williams III, received 12,012 votes compared to Atanus’ 12,447 votes. 30-year-old Williams wasn’t exactly a dream candidate either. He’s currently fighting a judge’s order to attend anger management classes and undergo a mental health assessment following a domestic violence dispute.

Considering a Republican hasn’t won the 9th district in over 60 years, Rep. Jan Schakowsky probably doesn’t care one way or another who won. But I suppose it will be nice to win with 70% of the vote against this crazy woman instead of only getting 60% against a slightly more reasonable candidate/domestic abuser – takes a bit of the pressure off.

Chicago GOP Candidate Knows the True Cause of Autism and Dementia

Susanne Atanus Autism

Not to let British politician David Silvester have all the fun, Susanne Atanus, a Republican candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in Illinois, says autism and dementia are punishments from God for the gay rights movement and abortions.

Wait a minute… autism isn’t caused by vaccines? Jenny McCarthy is going to be pissed.

Susanne Atanus, one of two Republicans lining up to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) for her seat representing the 9th District of Illinois, let out the crazy during an interview with the Daily Herald this week.

“I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first,” Atanus began in the taped portion of the segment.

Yikes. No wonder she has two failed runs for Congress on her belt. Oh well, at least she’ll always have her looks… oh wait. I wonder what she did to receive that punishment from God?

Considering a Republican hasn’t won the 9th district in over 60 years, I guess Atanus assumed she could say whatever she wanted, knowing she was going down in defeat anyways – barring a miracle from God. But the Illinois GOP is pretty peeved Atanus is making the rest of them look extra insane.

Illinois Republican Chairman Jack Dorgan urged Atanus to slowly step away from the party, saying:

“The offensive statements by Susanne Atanus have no place in the modern political debate, and she has no place on the ballot as a Republican. Her candidacy is neither supported nor endorsed by the leaders of our party, and she should withdraw from the race immediately.”

Meanwhile, Atanus’ primary opponent David Earl Williams III is rubbing his hands together with glee watching the scandal go down. Barely able to contain himself during the Daily Herald’s joint GOP candidate interviews, the slightly more moderate candidate began to look better and better by the second. And that’s no easy feat considering a judge recently ordered him to undergo a mental-health evaluation and anger-management classes.

Current Event Cat of the Day: Illinois Goes Gay

Current EVent Cat - Gay Marriage Illinois

Illinois’s gay marriage bill is signed, sealed, and delivered, making it the 16th state to legalize same-sex marriage. Sweet 16 and only 34 more to go!

Just days after Hawaii switched sides, Illinois followed suit with their own marriage equality legislation. The Illinois bill is set to go in effect on June 1, 2014, just in time for gay wedding season.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the legislation on Wednesday in front of 2,330 supporters gathered at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

“What we’re celebrating today is the triumph of democracy, the triumph of liberty,” Governor Pat Quinn said before he signed the bill on a desk once used by President Abraham Lincoln.

“We understand in our state that part of our unfinished business is to help other states in the United States of America achieve marriage equality.”

After the bill was signed the crowd shared celebratory kisses and waved miniature rainbow flags featuring the outline of Illinois. Congratulations Illinois! Welcome to the 21st century!

But while it was all fun and games in Chicago, the mood was less celebratory in downstate Illinois where some of the state’s most well recognized religious figures continued to express their opposition.

In Springfield, Illinois, a crowd gathered around for an exorcism by the local Catholic bishop in protest of the governor’s action.

“It is not the church that must change to confirm its teachings to the views of the world, but it is each individual who is called to be configured to Christ,” Bishop Thomas Paprocki said during the service.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a conservative catholic gathering if they didn’t try and tie the recent Illinois tornadoes to the state’s approval of the marriage equality bill. If acceptance of marriage equality equals destructive tornadoes, then I guess all Midwesterners are secret gay marriage fans – especially Oklahoma.

Tornadoes Sweep Through the Midwest

Tornadoes in Illinois

Move over Philippines, there’s a new natural disaster in town, and it hits a little closer to home. Powerful tornadoes swept through the U.S Midwest, demolishing homes, cutting off power, and killing six in Illinois.

Tornado season hit the Midwest unexpectedly this year. November is typically the off-season for tornadoes, but this was no off-season series of twisters. As many as 80 tornadoes ripped through Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky on Sunday, killing six in Illinois, injuring hundreds of others, and leaving many trapped in basements.

Weather doesn’t get more extreme than this in Illinois very often,” said Matt Friedlein, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

I was first alerted to the storm when Little Reagan suddenly refused to sit by the open window (his fav spot!) and ran under the bed to hide. Awww. Cats have such an instinct for storms/ I should really start reading weather forecasts because the storm was already well under way at that point.

Luckily, Chicago was spared from the fast-moving storm and none of the 60 tornadoes in the area managed to get us. But the strong winds and flash floods caused tens of thousands to be evacuated from Soldier Field ahead of the Chicago Bears game.

Elsewhere in the state, people weren’t so lucky. Six people died in Illinois and as many as 200 people were injured statewide. Washington, Illinois was hit particularly hard with the storm destroying or seriously damaging as many as 400 homes. So… pretty much all the homes in Washington, Illinois?

Governor Pat Quinn declared seven counties a state disaster area and is hoping for a federal disaster designation that would help people recover.

As for the storm, it has now moved on to northeastern U.S – albeit with less chance of tornadoes. Have fun you guys!
