Flooding, Flooding, Everywhere!

Flooding in India

First there was mass flooding in central Europe, then India, and now… Calgary?

After wreaking havoc in Germany, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic the floodwaters in central Europe have dropped and clean up crews are in damage-control mode.

Over in India, things aren’t looking so sunny. The death toll from flooding and landslides following heavy monsoon rains in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand has risen to nearly 600. The state’s Chief Minister, Vijay Bahuguna, said 556 bodies had been seen floating or buried in “slush”, and that the army was working to recover them. Rescuers also found 40 bodies floating down the River Ganges near Haridwar, a Hindu holy city.

34,000 people have been evacuated so far in Uttarakhand and another 50,000 are still stranded in the region. It’s kind of hard to leave when the roads and bridges were washed away by the floods. But the air force has been dropping paratroopers, food, and medicine for people trapped in the  towns and villages that are now cut off and soldiers are working on reopening roads.

And then there’s Calgary. Torrential rains and widespread flooding in southern Alberta have ripped out roads, cut off communities and forced about 100,000 people to evacuate their homes in Calgary. Flooding in CalgaryBut unlike in India, where bodies were found floating down the river, only one person has been reported missing and Calgarians are watching their cars, couches and refrigerators float away.

A Canmore resident described waking up to the rumbling sound of the creek near his house:

“At first it was just intense, pretty powerful, amazing thing to watch. As daylight came, it just got bigger and bigger and wider and wider, and it’s still getting bigger and bigger and wider and wider.

“All you can hear is like boulders and trees. I watched a refrigerator go by, I watched a shed go by, I watched couches go by. It’s insane.”

Better than dead bodies though!

American Woman Gang-Raped in India

American raped in India

Oh India, you never fail to disgust me. A 30-year-old American tourist was gang-raped in India after accepting a ride from a truck driver and two other men. Accepting a ride was her second mistake. Her first mistake was going to India.

The woman was attacked in Manali, a tourist destination in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, when she accepted a lift from the three men. According to police inspector Abhimanyu Kumar, medical tests have confirmed that the tourist was raped and police are hunting for the accused men.

“The woman cannot remember the number plate of the truck and she could not understand what the accused were talking about. They drove the truck to an isolated spot and raped her for nearly one hour,” Kumar said.

Although no arrests have been made so far, police have set up roadblocks and ordered every truck driver in Manali to report to the police station.

India’s no stranger to tourist rape. A Swiss cyclist was gang-raped in central state of Madhya Pradesh in March, a South Korean tourist was allegedly drugged and raped in January by the son of the owner of a hotel where she was staying, and a British woman leaped from her hotel room balcony in Agra when she feared being sexually assaulted by a member of her hotel staff. More recently (and by more recently, I mean on Saturday), a 21-year-old Irish charity worker was allegedly drugged and raped after drinking a cup of tea at an Indian businessman’s house.

According to a survey by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India, this isn’t great for tourism. The increasing reports of rape in India—especially of foreigners—has caused the number of foreign women tourists to drop by 35 percent.

Engineering Students in India Create Anti-Rape Underwear

Anti-Rape Underwear

Three engineering students in India have developed anti-rape underwear that emits powerful shocks and automatically alerts authorities. Well that’s one way to solve the rape problem in India…

The anti-rape underwear — called SHE or “Society Harnessing Equipment” — contains an electric shock circuit board near the breasts along with GPS and GSM modules.  The bra has the capability of shocking a person up to 82 times and as well as sending alerts to the police and the girl’s parents.

“A person trying to molest a girl will get the shock of his life the moment pressure sensors get activated, and the GPS and GSM modules would send an SMS on emergency number 100, as well as to parents of the girl,” Manisha Mohan, co-developer of SHE said.

The students decided to place the electrical circuit in the bra instead of the underpants after discussions with victims and law enforcement agencies revealed most women were first attacked in the breast area. Pressure sensors woven into the fabric of the clothing trigger the 3800kV electric shocks but the inside of the bra is lined with an insulating polymer to protect the wearer.

Note: the picture above is not the actual anti-rape underwear prototype. But I wish it was. The actual product is still being tweaked but will available for sale next month.

The students were motivated by the recent rape attacks in their country. The Delhi gang rape of a 23-year-old student in December sparked outrage across the country leading the Indian government to approve harsher punishments for rape. But rape is still a huge issue in India. Last month a Swiss tourist was gang raped while camping and a British tourist jumped off a balcony to escape sexual harassment. If only they had a taser strapped to their boobs….

Suspect in India Gang Rape (Ram Singh) Found Dead in Jail: Kinda had it coming…?

Ram Singh Delhi Gang Rape

Ram Singh, the main suspect in the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old student in Delhi was found dead in his jail cell early this morning.

Prison authorities say that Ram Singh was found on Monday hanging from a ceiling grill with a makeshift rope comprised of bed sheets. Tihar prison officials are calling the incident a suicide, citing Singh’s violent behavior and mood swings. The prison is currently conducting an internal investigation over what is being called a major lapse in prison security.

Singh’s family and defense lawyers, however, insist that the 33-year-old was murdered.

“He was killed and later hanged in the jail… It was not suicide,” said Mangey Lal, Ram Singh’s father, talking to reporters outside Tihar jail. He also said his son had been raped in prison by other inmates, and repeatedly threatened by prisoners and guards.

According to Singh’s lawyer, V K Anand, “There were no circumstances which could have led to Ram Singh committing suicide. There was no mental stress. He was very happy… The trial was going on very well.” Well, I don’t think the trial was going that well for him. And the alleged prison rapings probably created a bit of mental stress.

Ram Singh, along with his brother Mukesh, are two of the six men accused of the rape and murder and are being tried in a special “fast track” court in Delhi. Singh was the first suspect detained by the police and his confession ultimately led to the arrest of the other men. Although Singh had yet to testify in court, the police say they have enough forensic evidence to link all six men to the murdered woman and her friend, who was also badly beaten in the attack.

On a lighter note, Oscar Pistorius, the South African accused of killing his girlfriend, may also be “on the verge of suicide”. Note to self: killing people may cause suicide.
