Current Event Cat of the Day – Somali-born Norwegian Terrorist

Current EVent Cat - Norwegian Somali

Norway is apparently a haven for terrorists. First there was Anders Behring Breivik and now Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow, a Somali-born Norwegian man, has been named as a suspect in last month’s deadly attack on a Kenyan mall. Well, I guess two terrorists doesn’t make Norway a terrorist breeding ground – but considering the population is only like 30 people – two is a lot.

Last week Norway’s intelligence agency, the PST, had received information that a Norwegian citizen of Somali origin may have been involved, and sent an investigator to Kenya to check things out. Now Dhuhulow has been named a suspect and police are trying to determine whether he was one of the four militants captured on surveillance footage inside the mall in Nairobi.

Dhuhulow’s family fled to Norway in the 1990s but he couldn’t resist the call of Somalia and began taking “long vacations” to the motherland in 2009. Soon after he allegedly joined the Somali militant group – because what else is there to do in Somalia if you don’t want to be a pirate? Officials believe that the Somalia-born Norwegian national was an active member of many al-Shabab operations in Mogadishu and Kismayo and was well-known in jihadist circles.

The 23-year-old Norwegian citizen is the first of the possibly four gunmen to be identified from the security footage.  Kenyan authorities have so far been unable to identify any of the militants among the charred bodies pulled from the rubble – one of which could be Dhuhulow’s. Two foot-long boxes of charred body parts and a bunch of AK-47s found near the bodies have been sent to the morgue to see if they belong to the terrorists. Sifting through charred terrorist limbs and AK-47s? Sounds like a fun way to spend the weekend.

Death by Masturbation… And Other News

Death by Masturbation

Did Ariel Castro die during masturbation? Possibly.

New details have emerged about the death of the Cleveland kidnapper who was found hanging in his prison cell while awaiting trial. Officials say Castro’s hanging body was discovered sans pants. Since his underwear was around his ankles and he didn’t leave a suicide note officials are considering death by autoerotic asphyxiation, a way of intensifying orgasm during masturbation by depriving the body of oxygen. An open Bible was also found nearby. Masturbation and a Bible? What a way to go! NBC News

Snowden-father-Lou1There’s nothing like a father-son reunion in Russia. Lou Snowden, the father of exiled American leaker extraordinaire Edward Snowden, arrived in Russia to see his long lost son. Lou Snowden hasn’t seen his son since before he leaked the NSA documents and Edward Snowden hasn’t been seen by anyone (in public) since he was granted asylum in August. “I am not sure my son will be returning to the U.S. again,” his father said, but was happy that Edward “is safe and secure and he’s free.” Despite having to live in hiding in Russia until the end of time, the younger Snowden says he has no regrets about leaking the highly classified information and is adjusting to life in Russia. I guess after living in an airport terminal for a few months, anywhere would seem luxurious – even Russia. National Post

kwame-kilpatrickIf your nickname is the “hip hop mayor of Detroit” you know that at some point you’re going to spend some time in jail. Former mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick definitely lived up to his moniker after he was sentenced to 28 years in prison, seven months after being convicted on public corruption charges. Kilpatrick ran a secret money-making racket out of city hall, raking in millions for himself and his entourage while the rest of Detroit… well, they went bankrupt. Kilpatrick used his mayoral powers to give business to his friends and used city funding to fund his own lifestyle. He even used funds allotted for needy residents to pay for his own yoga. Hip hop mayors do yoga? Well, not anymore – unless they have some type of prison class. Detroit Free Press

BoehnerGovernment Shutdown Update #4232: A little bit of progress. Maybe. Hopes rose when House Speaker John Boehner offered a short-term debt limit increase to stave off default. The GOP said they would pass a “clean” bill (i.e. no conservative add-ons) that gave a six-week extension for the whole debt-ceiling issue in exchange for negotiations with the White House to end the government shutdown. A short-term solution is better than no solution, right? Wrong! Well, maybe right – they’re still talking through some things. But as of now President Obama and House Republicans have failed to reach an agreement on the six-week extension during their meeting on Thursday. Both parties did agree on two things though: it was a good meeting and they will continue talks. Progress/procrastination! New York Times

Kenya-policeKenyan police must be super busy with the shopping mall attack investigation because they don’t seem to be doing much else. Citizens are outraged after three men accused of gang-raping a 16-year-old and dumping her in an outhouse were only sentenced to 5 years in prison. Just kidding – they won’t serve any jail time. Instead their punishment was cutting grass around the police camp – for a couple of hours. The victim was attacked after returning home from her grandfather’s funeral (!) and broke her back during the struggle. She now uses a wheelchair – otherwise they’d probably make her cut grass with the gang bangers. BBC News

Kenya is on a “White Widow” Hunt

White Widow Passport

The hunt is on for Samantha Lewthwaite, a fugitive known as the “White Widow” who is wanted for her involvement in the Kenyan shopping mall attack.

Interpol has issued a worldwide arrest notice for the notorious “white widow” at the request of Kenyan authorities. The 29-year-old Muslim convert is best known for being the wife (and now widow…) of Jermaine Lindsay who was one of four suicide bombers that participated in the 2005 London bombings that killed 52 commuters.

Lewthwaite originally criticized her late husband and condemned the attacks — but later apparently had a change of heart and embraced the jihadi cause (or was just a good liar).

Since there is no concrete evidence linking her to last week’s terrorist attack on the upscale shopping mall, the Interpol statement said Lewthwaite is wanted on charges of possessing explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony in December 2011. The white widow, who has been using a fake South African passport under the name Natalie Faye Webb, was supposedly planning attacks in touristy regions along the coast of Kenya.

While authorities are unsure about the extent of her involvement in the Kenya attack, the Briton has been linked with Somali militant Islamist group al-Shabab. Add that to the fact that her late husband was a suicide bomber and several witnesses saw a white woman shooting at them and she’s looking pretty suspicious… White Widow Cat

So if you see anyone who looks like this: (roughly….)

Please notify Interpol.

Current Event Cat of the Day: Kenyan Mall Siege

Current Event Cat - Kenyan Mall Seige

The Kenyan mall siege is now on day three, after gunmen from Al-Shabab, Somalia’s al Qaeda affiliate, stormed the shopping centre on Saturday afternoon, killing 68, wounding 175 and taking a bunch more hostage.

Fast forward to Monday and blasts can still be heard from inside the Kenyan mall where the al Qaeda–linked terrorists still hold a number of hostages. Authorities believe that 10 to 15 gunman are still in the mall holding about 30 hostages. The Kenyan military has been doing its best to isolate the gunmen in the mall and has launched an all-out assault on the remaining militants.

Al-Shabab, who is weirdly active on Twitter, says it carried out the attack in response to Kenyan military operations in Somalia, where they are trying to impose a hardcore Islamic state. The terrorist group has repeatedly threatened attacks on Kenyan soil if Nairobi did not pull its troops out of Somalia.

Somali al-Shabab militants threatened to kill the hostages they are holding as Kenyan troops move to end their siege – no negotiations! The Kenyan Defence Forces said that three terrorists had already been killed and that the chances of any attackers “sneaking and escaping” were slim.  But they should probably hurry that up with that all-out assault…

Essentially it will turn out as a suicide mission for the gunmen. But while everyone is sitting around mourning this tragedy, one Idaho company is taking things into their own hands. Actually, more like putting things into their own guns…

An Idaho ammunition maker has introduced pork into their bullets as a deterrent against Islamist terrorists who are forbidden by religion to eat pig.

“With Jihawg Ammo, you don’t just kill an Islamist terrorist, you also send him to hell,” the company wrote in a press release. “That should give would-be martyrs something to think about before they launch an attack. If it ever becomes necessary to defend yourself and those around you, our ammo works on two levels.”

Yes, Jihawg Ammo claims that their $20-per-box “Pig in the Paint” bullets are the solution to world peace: the company’s website proclaims, “Peace through Pork!”

Problem solved. No further questions. Now if only they sold those bullets at the Kenyan mall…

Kenya Is All About Extra-Marital Affairs, But Not So Much About Condoms

Extra-marital Affair Ad

A TV advertisement promoting the use of condoms in extra-marital affairs in Kenya and been pulled following outcry from religious leaders.

Just like South Africa has its sugar-daddy/AIDS problem, Kenya has a problem with extra-marital affair/AIDS problem. And what better way to solve the problem than with a public service announcement.

The advertisement, “Weka Condom Mpangoni,” sponsored by Kenya’s Ministry of Public Health, USAID and UKAID, shows a woman speaking to a friend about her marriage and confiding she is having cheating on her husband. Her friend tells her to practice safe sex, saying “protect your family, don’t forget to put on a condom,” and discusses the possibility of spreading HIV.

The commercial was launched because up to 30 percent of married couples in Kenya had other partners, and around 1.6 million people out of Kenya’s 41.6 million population are living with HIV.

But religious leaders are not buying it. They say the ad promotes infidelity, not safe sex and protection against HIV.

Bishop Julius Kalu of the Anglican Church of Kenya, says the ad, which was shown on free-to-air TV stations, “openly propagates immorality, especially when all family members are gathered before television sets, waiting to watch news.”

I don’t know, Bishop Kalu… if 30 percent of married couples are already cheating, I don’t think a public service announcement is going to make much of a difference at this point.

Kenyan Voting Process Going “Relatively Well”

Kenya Election Voting Process

The presidential election is underway in Kenya and so far the voting process has been relatively smooth, which by Kenyan electoral standards means fewer than a dozen police officers were hacked to death by machete-wielding gangs.

Millions of Kenyans are casting their vote today in what is being proclaimed a crucial presidential race, the first since the disastrous 2007 election that resulted in widespread bloodshed. Elections in 2007 went awry when a disputed result and even more disputed process sparked ethnic clashes and killed more than 1,000 people.

While all eyes are on the presidential race this time around, Kenyans are also choosing members of parliament and senators, county governors and members of 47 county assemblies. Although eight presidential candidates are running, the contest is essentially a two-horse race between Prime Minister Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta. Fun fact: Uhuru Kenyatta will face trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague over the 2007 post-election violence.

Kenya’s top politicians are urging millions of voters to avoid mayhem similar to that between the tribal loyalists and rival candidates during the country’s previous elections but many citizens are worried history could repeat itself. Some have stocked up on supplies in case of post-election riots and many have fled ethnically mixed urban areas, fearing reprisal killings should the election results be disputed.

Yet, despite the long lines and the painstakingly slow process, the current election has been going relatively well compared to 2007. Well, anything looks orderly compared to 2007… so I wouldn’t necessarily call this a success story yet, especially since this year’s voting process has seen its own share of violence.

“Hiccups” along the way include:

  • A group of 200 secessionists armed with guns, machetes and bows and arrows set a trap for police in the pre-dawn hours, killing at least five officers
  • Another attack by MRC secessionists in nearby Kilifi killed one police officer and five attackers
  • Three explosions in three different polling stations in Mandera

Despite all this, the current violence is still no match for what happened during the previous round of presidential elections in 2007. I guess when you set the bar that low, there’s nowhere to go but up? Good luck Kenya.
