When Taking a Gun Selfie, Remember: Don’t Pull the Trigger

Gun Selfie

A 21-year-old Mexican man who posed for a gun selfie died shortly after shooting himself in the head by accident.

Oscar Aguilar was no stranger to the selfie. His Facebook page showed him posing in front of sports cars, sitting on motorbikes and hugging semi-attractive women. But things went horribly wrong when he decided to give his Facebook friends a little taste of the infamous gun selfie after he had been drinking with pals in Mexico City last weekend. Unfortunately, instead of becoming a big shot on social media, Oscar just ended up shot.

“I heard a gunshot, and then I heard somebody screaming and realized somebody had been hurt. I called the police straight away and when they arrived they found that he was still alive,” neighbor Manfredo Paez Paez said.

Police say he failed to realize the gun was loaded when he began snapping pictures of himself waving it about.

The 21-year-old died on the way to hospital in Mexico City. Sad, but on the bright side, Oscar is currently in the running for the coveted 2014 Darwin Award. It’s a tight race between him and that Florida kid who almost died lighting himself ablaze for the popular social media fire challenge.

Mexico Legalizes Vigilante Groups and Captures Cartel Leader

Mexico militias take on drug cartels

The only way to combat gang violence is with more gang violence! The Mexican government has decided to incorporate armed, civilian “self defense” groups into the country’s old and largely forgotten quasi-military units called the Rural Defense Corps.

This new vigilante endorsement will give the armed civilians the authority to pursue (whoever they deem) criminals. Drug cartels beware: vigilante groups estimate their numbers at 20,000 armed men.

Vigilante groups have been popping up over the last year in the Michoacan region in response to the Knights Templar drug cartel. The vigilantes accused the government of not doing enough to protect locals from extortion and violence so they took things into their own hands. After they began doing a better job than the actual police force at combatting the drug cartel, President Enrique Pena Nieto felt compelled to makes these vigilante groups legit by giving them government approval.

The official announcement came right after the “self defense” security forces captured one of the four top leaders of the Knights Templar drug cartel. Dionicio Loya Plancarte, known as El Tio (The Uncle), was one of the country’s most wanted drug lords and had a $2.25m bounty on his head.

Under the new agreement between the vigiliante leaders and the government, the groups will be deployed temporarily and as needed.

“These units will be temporary and will be under the control of the authorities,” the federal government said in a statement, “to cooperate with the troops in the activities that these carry out and when required by the military command”.

Vigilante leaders will have to submit a list of their members to the Defense Department and will be allowed to keep their weapons as long as they register them with the army. And then some corrupt government official will leak their names to the drug cartels and it’s goodbye vigilantes…. Viva Mexico!

Current Event Cat of the Day: Mexican Execution

Current Event Cat - Mexican Execution

Texas executed a Mexican citizen on Wednesday night – but not the old fashioned way along the border with a shotgun, a barbed wire fence and a redneck militia.

Convicted cop killer Edgar Tamayo Arias, 46, a Mexican citizen, was executed by the state of Texas despite national and international outcry and warnings that his death could damage relations between the US and Mexico. Among those objecting to the Mexican execution were a former Texas governor, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, and the entire country of Mexico.

“I want to be clear: I have no reason to doubt the facts of Mr. Tamayo’s conviction, and as a former prosecutor, I have no sympathy for anyone who would murder a police officer,” John Kerry wrote. “This is a process issue I am raising because it could impact the way American citizens are treated in other countries.”

Tamayo, who was in the U.S. illegally, was convicted in the killing of Guy Gaddis, a Houston police officer, in 1994 and sentenced to death. Fast-forward twenty years and it’s execution time!

But the execution almost didn’t go though. It was delayed by more than three hours as the U.S. Supreme Court considered appeals to keep 46-year-old Edgar Tamayo from the Texas death chamber. Tamayo’s lawyers argued he had been deprived of his rights as a foreign citizen as he was not promptly advised of his right to consular help. They also pulled the old mentally-ill and brain-damaged claim, saying that the Mexican only had an IQ of 67. But the last-ditch appeal failed and the cop killer was put to death by lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville, near Houston.

Mexican Citizen ExecutionThe Mexican government was not impressed with America’s handling of the case, saying in a statement this week it “strongly opposed” the execution and said failure to review Tamayo’s case and reconsider his sentence would be “a clear violation by the United States of its international obligations.”

But Texas doesn’t care about sh*t like that. They only care about the death penalty.

“It doesn’t matter where you’re from,” Governor Rick Perry’s spokeswoman said. “If you commit a despicable crime like this in Texas, you are subject to our state laws, including a fair trial by jury and the ultimate penalty.”

Well, one less illegal immigrant I guess.

Current Event Cat of the Day: Miguel Angel Trevino Morales

Drug Cartel Miguel Angel Trevino Morales

Mexico’s war on drugs is over! Actually it’s not even close to being over but the Mexican military took the drug trade down a notch when they captured the head of the notoriously vicious Zetas drug cartel, Miguel Angel Trevino Morales.

Mexican Marines caught Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, head of the Zetas cartel and known around town as “Z-40”, in a pick-up truck near Nuevo Laredo. When captured Trevino Morales had eight guns and $2 million in cash on him. Very suspicious…

And Trevino Morales is no friendly neighbourhood pot dealer. He’s reputed to be exceptionally dangerous and violent—he’s known to burn his enemies alive in 55-gallon drums. Others have been beaten to death with wooden planks.

Along with the rest of the Zetas, Trevino Morales has been spreading terror through Mexico, making their name displaying the bodies of their murdered victims throughout the country. In 2010, the drug cartel’s leaders ordered the killing of 72 undocumented immigrants as punishment for their refusal to act as drugs mules in 2010 in what is known as the San Fernando massacre. A year later, he apparently oversaw the massacre of almost 200 more immigrants for similar reasons.

Trevino Morales rose to the top of the Zetas in 2012 after leader Lazcano died in a shootout with Mexican marines. Since joining the Zetas he was placed on the “wanted” list on both sides of the border for ordering massacres and running drugs on a global scale.

Although Zetas is only one of eight major, rival drug cartels involved in an ongoing conflict for regional control, Trevino Morales’s capture represents the first major blow against an organized crime leader by President Enrique Peña Nieto, whose administration is struggling to drive down persistently high levels of violence. At the very least, it’s a true public relations victory!

And the Title of the World’s Most Obese Nation Goes to…. Mexico!

Mexico Obese Nation

“We’re #2, we’re #2!” Americans everywhere shouted as Mexico waddled past them to take over the title as the world’s most obese nation.

According to United Nations report released Tuesday, Mexico is now the leader in obesity rates – out of populous countries. If it were out of any old country, the South Pacific ones would definitely win. Those are some obese islanders!

Anyway, the report details how nearly 33 percent of Mexicans are now obese and 70 percent are overweight (don’t worry Americans – you’re not far behind at 32%! – just keep piling it in!) Childhood obesity is especially rough in Mexico – it has tripled within the past decade. Diabetes is also a huge problem with 70,000 deaths in each year caused by weight-related diabetes and more than 400,000 new cases diagnosed annually. The weight crisis disproportionately affects the young and the poor.

‘The same people who are malnourished are the ones who are becoming obese,’ said physician Abelardo Avila with Mexico’s National Nutrition Institute.

‘In the poor classes we have obese parents and malnourished children. The worst thing is the children are becoming programmed for obesity. It’s a very serious epidemic.’

Why do Mexicans keep eating and eating? For starters, the country’s restaurant culture promotes foods that are fried and high in calories. Fast food chains have spread rapidly since the early 1990s. Then there’s also the money issue: healthier options tend to be pricier. And of course, the Coca Cola addiction.

‘Because of a lack of money and food, people go for more energy-intense foods. These are often high in sugar or fat. People drink Coca Cola as if it was water in order to have the energy to carry on – and so many of the foods are rich in carbs, are full of cheese or are fried,” Mexican resident Sally Neiman says.

‘There is no control in schools to what kids eat this days, it is normal to see a kid having a soda for breakfast and eating ‘comida chatarra’ (junk food), it is allowed to be sold in schools.’

‘There really is no clear information on nutritional facts in this country and people with poor education are not aware of the risks. They believe the energy a Coke or a fatty food will bring to them is beneficial in order to help them get through the day.’

Mexicans do get their fill of Vitamin T though: tacos, tamales and tostadas.

Wait a minute…I think I know what’s happening here… it’s not the tacos or the tostadas, it’s that only the fit Mexicans are able to jump the barbed wire immigration fence into Arizona! All the fat Mexicans are left behind, driving up the obesity rate and all the fit Mexicans are living it up migrant worker style!

Current Event Cat of the Day: Yanira Maldonado

Current Event Cat - American Freed from Mexico Yanira Maldonado

Brokedown palace Mexican style! Except with a slightly more uplifting ending. Yanira Maldonado, the Arizona woman, held in a Mexican jail for a week on a drug-smuggling charge was freed after a court reviewed her case.

Yanira Maldonado was arrested by Mexican soldiers last week at a security checkpoint after they found about 12 pounds of marijuana stashed under her bus seat. Packets of drugs were found attached to the seat bottoms with metal hooks.

Initially it was Yanira Maldonado’s husband, Gary, who was arrested, but once she persuaded the soldiers to let her accompany her husband to serve as his translator, they decided to just arrest her and let him go. Ha! Gary said authorities originally demanded $5,000 for his wife’s release, but somehow the bribe fell through.

While she was rotting away in the Mexican jail, her husband and lawyer worked to exonerate her, encouraging court officials to review security footage from the bus company that showed the couple – the only Americans on the bus – boarding a commercial bus traveling from Mexico to Phoenix with only blankets, bottles of water and her purse in hand.

“Many thanks to everyone, especially my God who let me go free, my family, my children, who with their help, I was able to survive this test,” she said.

Meanwhile, US officials were busy intercepting two speedboats carrying $1 billion worth of cocaine into the US.

Mexican Gas Explosion… And Other News

Mexico Gas Explosion

Gas explosion in Mexico is surprisingly not caused by burritos.

19 people are dead and 36 injured after a gas tanker exploded on a highway outside Mexico City. The explosion, which occurred early Tuesday morning, damaged multiple buildings and cars in the area. A giant ball of smoke rose over the highway where the gas tanker collided with another vehicle. Apparently Mexico has a big problem with this type of thing. Mexican trucks, often overloaded or unsafely operated, have been involved in a number of spectacular, deadly accidents in recent years. The construction of improvised homes just feet away from major highways probably doesn’t help the situation either. CTV News

Joe FrancisIt couldn’t have happened to a sleazier guy! Girls Gone Wild creator, Joe Fancis, was convicted by a jury on Monday of false imprisonment and assault of three women. Francis, 40, faces up to five years in prison. Ha! The victims had gone to the Supper Club in Hollywood where they met Francis. Francis allegedly grabbed one of the women and took her to his limo, and her friends followed, believing that Francis would give them a ride to their car. But during the ride, Francis’ bodyguard and driver allegedly produced sheriff’s badges and did not allow the women to get out of the limo. They were then taken to  his house where a physical altercation ensued between Francis and two of the women. After Francis slammed one of their heads on the floor four times, the women were escorted out of the house and allegedly told a taxi would not be called and paid for if they called the police. Looks like he can only legitimately lure women into his house with the promise of a free GGW T-shirt. Los Angeles Times

Geoffrey-Portway-1873818Britons are trying to eat US children! Or at least one is. Briton Geoffrey Portway has admitted to plotting to kidnap, rape, kill and eat an American child. Creepy. The 40-year-old British man, who is currently living in Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty and now faces deportation and 18 to 27 years in prison. In a raid last year, agents found the basement of Portway’s home equipped with a steel cage and a child-sized coffin. Even creepier. But Portway made a crucial mistake – revealing his creepiness on the internet! The pedophile spent months discussing his plan online with an American man. The two poured over photos of real children, deciding which one was best to mutilate. Not sure if 18 years is going to be long enough… BBC News

DR Congo & PreggersThe Democratic Republic of the Congo is the worst place for mothers. Come to think of it, it’s probably the worst place for people in general. A new study released by Save the Children reports that the war and poverty in DR Congo have left mother malnourished and unsupported, making it the toughest place to raise children. The study used factors such as maternal health, child mortality, education and income to compare 176 countries. Finalnd was declared the winner, followed by Sweden and Norway. The bottom 10 were all sub-Saharan African countries where at least one woman in 30 dies from pregnancy related causes. BBC News

Farrah Does PeenMove over Kim Kardashian and Ray J! Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham has a new porno out and it has already outsold the video of Kim getting a golden Ray J shower. Farrah and porn star James Deen’s backdoor romp amassed 2 million viewers in 12 hours after it debuted last night. Kim and Ray J only got 600,000 views in that time frame. But to be fair, Kim’s was a grainy homemade sex tape. Farrah’s is a well-lit, edited video made with a professional porn star – which can be seen here in clip form (NSFW – unless you’re hoping to get fired…) Farrah TwitterHowever, the teen mom still thinks she can convince people it was a private sex tape that she just happened to sell to Vivid Entertainment for $1 million. The New York Post
