Billboard Fail: Morgan Freeman Gets Mistaken for Nelson Mandela…. And Other News

Mandela or Morgan Freeman

Oops! A billboard was erected in India as a memorial to Nelson Mandela – except they accidently used a photo of Morgan Freeman.

The billboard was placed on the side of a road in the southern city of Coimbatore. The Mandela memorial showed Morgan Freeman’s giant face smiling down as well as smaller images of human rights icons Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi. The Indian owner of a billboard was understandly emabressed, telling AFP “we will replace it with the correct picture of Mandela,” adding that he did not know how the gaffe occurred. The actor and anti-apartheid leader do have a lot in common though (besides appearance). Both served many rough years in prison – Nelson Mandela in Capetown, Morgan Freeman in Shawshank. Barack Obama, Vladimir PutinPoor Putin. If only he could spy on his citizens like Obama can… Speaking at a news conference Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about Russia’s favourite transient, Edward Snowden, and his NSA leaking skills. During the conference Putin admitted that he was jealous of President Obama’s freedom to spy.  “I envy him because he can do something like this and get away with it,” Putin said. I’m sure Obama is envious of him too – if only he could lock up and/or poison anyone who criticized him. Sigh… Putin went on to downplay the seriousness of spying saying, “There’s nothing to be happy about and there is nothing to be sad about because espionage is one of the oldest professions in the world, just like some other well-known professions we won’t mention here.” Washington Post

Duck Dynasty GayShocking news: an ultra-Christian redneck duck hunter from rural Louisiana is not a big fan of the gays. Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson made a few comments to GQ that aren’t sitting well with the network honchos. “It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical,” the Duck Dynasty patriarch told the magazine, adding that gay behavior leads into bestiality and then “sleeping around.” While A&E promptly suspended Phil Robertson from the reality show, saying they’re “extremely disappointed” in Robertson’s comments that “are based on his own personal beliefs,” Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal came to the defense of the reality TV star saying it was a “messed up situation”. Former US vice-presidential candidate and future reality TV host Sarah Palin also defended Robertson, tweeting: “Free speech is endangered species; those ‘intolerants’ hatin’ & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all.” I’m sure she wasn’t tweeting that back when the Dixie Chicks voiced their opinion of George Bush, but whatever – there’s no logic in Palinland, or sin for that matter. South Sudan FightingThere’s nothing like a little growing pain for Earth’s newest country. Fighting in South Sudan has gone up a notch or two in the last few days after the former VP and his supporters attempted a coup that quickly got shut down. The unrest, which broke out on Sunday, has killed about 500 people so far. The American embassy in South Sudan issued a warning for American citizens to flee and the British government is currently evacuating its citizens from embattled country, which appears on the brink of civil war. Leaders and officials from other countries and the U.N. are working on a peaceful solution, but considering rebels from the second-largest ethnic group, the Nuer, stormed the U.N .base on Thursday, killing three Indian peacekeepers, a peaceful U.N. solution seems like a bit of a reach at this point. Target gets hackedTarget gets targeted. The retail store is investigating what could be one of the largest breaches of consumer data involving 40 million customer names, card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes. Investigators say the data was hacked the day after Thanksgiving and may be ongoing. The stolen data from up to 40 million credit and debit cards of shoppers is thought to have been taken using software installed on card swipers at checkout lines. Target has apologized and said it is “working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice” but in the meantime Target shoppers should take a second glance at their bank statements. Nelson Mandela Interpreter – This Guy’s A Phony!

Interpreter Gone Wrong

The sign language interpreter at Tuesday’s memorial service for Nelson Mandela was apparently a fraud, a fake, a total phony, who merely flailed his arms around during the service.

The fake interpreter, who translated President Obama’s speech, “was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for,” says Bruno Druchen, the director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa.

“He’s a complete fraud,” said Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town.

“He wasn’t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around.”

Loening went on to say that it looked like the phony interpreter was “trying to swat a few flies away from his face and his head”.

Throughout the memorial service, deaf users of Twitter took to the social networking site to say WTF?!? Where did this guy come from?!?

Turns out, nobody knows where this guy came from.

“The deaf community in South Africa are completely outraged and nobody knows who he is,” Ms Loening said.

“We can’t find a name or anything. The organisations who have accredited interpreters do not know him at all.”

Did anyone know this guy? Or did he just walk up to the podium and start flapping his arms with such confidence that people assumed he belonged?

After some careful investigation post-interpreter scandal, the man was eventually identified as Thamsanqa Jantjie. Jantjie insisted he was doing proper sign language interpretation of the speeches but he also said he hallucinated that angels were entering the stadium. And to top it off, he suffers from schizophrenia and has been prone to violence in the past. Good to know the secret service were doing their job…

President Obama Takes a Funeral Selfie… And Other News

Obama Selfie

Oh President Obama, no… not a funeral selfie.

Nelson Mandela’s funeral is shaping up to be the who’s who of political leaders so it’s no surprise that President Obama wanted to snap a few photos. Obama, the latest entry to the Tumblr Selfies at Funerals, took a smiling selfie with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s “celebration of life” memorial on Tuesday. But that wasn’t Obama’s only faux-pas. Obama also shook hands with Cuban president Raúl Castro (aka America’s arch nemesis) in what appears to be the second U.S.-Cuban leader handshake in the last five decades – former President Bill Clinton made that same mistake in 2000. Judging from Michelle Obama’s face, the funeral selfie was the bigger faux pas. But this next picture takes the funeral faux pas cake: flirting with hot Scandinavian Prime Ministers while your wife gives you the death glare.

Mandela Funeral Flirting

USA Today

China MandelaWhile the rest of the world is watch their leaders taking funeral selfies at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, China is making sure their citizens get the NSFD version (not suitable for democracies). The Chinese government has issued a series of orders to media ahead of Mandela’s funeral to make sure any mention of democracy or human rights is filtered out. “All media and websites must be prudent in selecting the materials and [must] report appropriately,” the ministry’s orders read. “All posts and comments on Weibo and blogs that take advantage of the funeral of Mandela to attack our political systems and state leaders must be deleted immediately.” Also banned from the funeral coverage are the usual controversial topics: the Dalai Lama, Tibet, or anything Taiwan. There’s not a ton of Taiwan-Mandela related material, but filtering mentions of human rights out of Nelson Mandela’s funeral coverage? That’s going to be a short news clip. South China Morning Post

Bob Filner and His Creepy SmileSan Diego’s ultra creepy former mayor, Bob Filner, has been sentence to 90 days home confinement by a judge after pleading guilty to sexual criminal charges earlier this year – which included asking his director of communications to work without underwear. No jail time, three years probation, and some mental health treatment isn’t a bad deal for sexually harassing three women, but attorney Gloria Allred blasted the plea bargain as too soft. But there is an upside to his political downfall – he is now banned from seeking or holding public office again. Los Angeles Times

French troops patrol past two rebel vehicles set on fire in Bangui, Central African RepublicFrance is having some serious car trouble. I mean CAR trouble. Two French soldiers were killed in combat overnight in the troubled Central African Republic. The casualties are the first since the operation to restore stability in the former French colony began. While CAR has been quickly descending into chaos eve since Michel Djotodia ousted President Francois Bozize back in March, France just recently deployed 1,600 soldiers as part of a UN-backed operation. The French force is trying to disarm rival Muslim and Christian fighters who have embarked on a killing, looting and raping rampage. According to the Red Cross, at least 465 people have been killed in the capital, Bangui, since Thursday – and now there are two French soldiers to add to the list. The Globe and Mail

PIP plantsAfter PIP popped thousands of women’s fake boobs, Jean-Claude Mas, the founder of PIP, a French medical-device company, is headed to jail. The PIP founder was sentence to four years in jail for allegedly distributing faulty breast implants. The substandard silicone gel in the implants caused many to rupture. At one time PIP was the third largest global supplier of breast implants, and an estimated 300,000 women have had received them in 65 countries – mainly Latin American ones. Mas, 74, showed no emotion as his verdict was read, and denied that the silicone was harmful. The 5,000 women registered as plaintiffs and their ruptured boobs felt otherwise. The Guardian

The Whole World Mourns Nelson Mandela… Even Paris Hilton. And Other News…

Paris Hilton Tweet

As South Africans gather in Johannesburg and Soweto to mourn their former leader, Nelson Mandela, who died on Thursday at age 95, there is one person who is taking the news especially hard: Paris Hilton.

But Paris isn’t upset about his death. No, Paris is upset about the bad publicity. As the news of Nelson Mandela’s death hit the internet, a fake Paris Hilton tweet eulogized Mandela, saying, “RIP Nelson Mandela. Your ‘I Have A Dream’ speech was so inspiring. Amazing man.” It was obviously a fake tweet – and not just because Paris refuted it by tweeting “Whoever made that stupid fake tweet lacks respect to the loss the world is mourning right now. Same goes for all the blogs who ran with it,” but because she obviously had no idea Nelson Mandela died until it became about her. On second thought, Paris was probably thrilled about the bad publicity. After all publicity is good publicity – especially for 32 year-old socialite has-beens. US Magazine

Dick CheneyRemember that time Dick Cheney called Nelson Mandela a terrorist? In the wake of Nelson Mandela’s passing, it’s been pointed out that Dick Cheney doesn’t regret his 1986 decision to vote against freeing the anti-apartheid leader. At the time, the US congress put together the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, a bill that called for tough sanctions and travel restrictions on the South Africa and its leaders, as well as the release of political prisoners like Mandela, then leader of the African National Congress (ANC). Although the measure passed with bipartisan support, both Ronald Reagan and his pal Dick Cheney voted against it, calling the ANC a “terrorist organization.” In 2000, Cheney reaffirmed his decision, saying, “The ANC was then viewed as a terrorist organization. I don’t have any problems at all with the vote I cast 20 years ago.” Well, I know someone who won’t be accompanying President Obama and Michelle to South Africa for a certain funeral…. North Korea CampsIn not surprising North Korean news, Amnesty International has released a series of satellite images showing North Korea’s large-scale network of labor camps – also known as torture factories. Although North Korea denies the existence of these political prison camps, the photos suggest that the inmate population is expanding even as tens of thousands are reportedly starved, raped, tortured, and even killed. “For Amnesty International, which has been investigating human rights violations for the last 50 years, we find North Korea to be in a category of its own,” said Amnesty’s East Asia researcher Rajiv Narayan, “The gruesome reality of North Korea’s continued investment in this vast network of repression has been exposed.” I wonder if any of the photos managed to capture Uncle Chang Song-thaek, Kim Jong-un’s powerful uncle who was recently “dismissed” from his post at the helm of North Korea’s military… Business Insider

Pee in a cupAmericans want everyone to pee in a cup. Welfare recipients, politicians, hospital patients – everyone. According to a Huffington Post poll, 64 percent of Americans are in favour of requiring welfare recipients to submit to random drug testing – a policy Republicans have been pushing for years. But what Americans love even more than forcing someone who makes $7.25 an hour to urinate in a cup to prove they’re not on drugs, is forcing members of Congress to pee in a cup. 78 percent say they support drug testing for congressional lawmakers. NIgerian Man in BoatA Nigerian man survived three days at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after his tugboat sank to the bottom. The cook survived by breathing an ever-dwindling supply of oxygen in an air pocket and living off of one bottle of coke. As the temperature dropped to below zero, the cook, dressed only in his boxers, thought he was a goner. And he was – until a diver searching the wreck saw a hand. Assuming it was another corpse (they had already pulled out four bodies), the diver grabbed it and got the shock of his life. “When he went to grab the hand, the hand grabbed him!” said Tony Walker, project manager for the Dutch company DCN Diving. The rescue happened back in May but the video just went viral. NY Post

Nelson Mandela Dies at Age 95… And Other News

Nelson Mandela

Former South African President Nelson Mandela died Thursday at age 95.

Best known for leading South Africa’s transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s after spending 27 years in a tuberculosis-ridden prison, Mandela finally succumbed to his recurring lung infection – most likely a result of the lingering tuberculosis he caught in prison. Friends, family and …military personnel (?) gathered at the anti-Apartheid leader’s deathbed in his Johannesburg home where he had been receiving home-based medical care after spending three months in the hospital. South Africa’s current president, Jacob Zuma, confirmed in a statement on South African national TV that Mandela had “departed” and was at peace. But enough about South Africa, what does President Obama have to say about all this? “He no longer belongs to us – he belongs to the ages,” Obama said in a brief statement, adding that Mandela “took history in his hands and bent the arc of the moral universe towards justice”. Virginia Attorney General Kenneth CuccinelliKen Cuccinelli, best known for his war on oral sex and his recent loss in Virginia’s gubernatorial election, is trying to kill gay marriage with extra paper work. After getting advice from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s office, the Virginia Department of Taxation decided that they will not adhere to Internal Revenue Service law on recognizing same-sex couples married elsewhere due to the state’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. So basically gay married couples can file their federal taxes as married coupes but will still be treated as singles by Virginia state tax officials. The Virginia chapter of the ACLU is up in arms about the decision accusing state officials of “ongoing hostility toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Virginians, including legally married same-sex couples.” Even the business sector is pissed because of the “human resources nightmare” that will occur if federal and state taxes and deductibles are calculated in different ways. But at least Ken Cuccinelli is happy – more paperwork means less time for oral sex. Washington Post

Thai KingKing Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand has a special birthday wish this year: stop the violence and support each other. While he didn’t make any direct references, I’m pretty sure he was talking about the thousand of protesters trying to bring down the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Despite getting the thumbs up from Thailand’s parliament to keep her government going, protesters have amped up their demonstrations against Yingluck, the sister of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister, who fled in 2008 before being convicted of abuse of power. Although initially refusing to resign, escalating violence between demonstrators and security forces may have changed her tune. Yingluck is now saying that she is willing to do “anything” to stop the protests. Anything..? Luckily she has a bit of time to think it over as the two sides have reached a truce to celebrate the king’s birthday. But according to Opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuban, come Friday the protestors will continue their scheme to overthrow the “Thaksin regime.” Al Jazeera

Wally and his HusbandThe weather was warm, but the welcome… not so much. Newly chosen U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, James “Wally” Brewster, arrived in Santo Domingo last week amid protests from Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders. The God-fearing protesters deemed Ambassador Wally’s appointment an insult to the Caribbean nation because he is openly gay. Not just gay – but openly gay. Wally, who brought along his husband, seemed pretty happy to “return to the beauty of the Dominican Republic” but the church-going locals see it as a U.S. ploy to “impose on us marriage between gays and lesbians as well as adoption by these couples.” Maybe they should concentrate more on not being a third world country and less on gay conspiracy theories. The Guardian

Ukraine ProtestsUkrainian protesters are being total Nazis! After pro-Europe demonstrators in the Ukraine took to the streets, calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and raging against President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to abandon a deal for closer ties with the European Union, the prime minister denounced them as “Nazis and criminals.” Yanukovych has said the EU deal would cause Ukraine to break ties with Russia and he just can’t live without his precious Putin. But the rest of the Ukraine doesn’t feel the same way. The deal remains pretty popular throughout the country, especially in the western regions. How popular? So popular that demonstrators are willing to face the “harsh” crackdown Ukrainian police have promised in order to continue their protests. Reuters
