Oklahomophobic Governor Mary Fallin Cuts Spousal Benefits For All National Guards To Avoid Giving Benefits To Same-Sex Couples

Proving that she is a mix between a 5-year-old mid-temper tantrum and Scrooge McDuck, Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin has come up with a new plan to deny same-sex military spouses rights by denying all military spouses benefit rights.

Oklahoma may not be the gay-friendliest state, in fact you might as well rename it Oklahomophobic, but Republican Governor Mary Fallin’s decision to stop processing benefits for all National Guard members to prevent gay couples from receiving benefits takes the state’s anti-gay stance to the next level.

In September, Mary Fallin promised to prohibit Oklahoma’s National Guard from providing benefits to married same-sex couples – despite the fact that this directly violated a Pentagon directive and a presidential decree. Apparently no one told the Republican governor that federal mandates trump state laws. According to Fallin’s point of view, Supreme Court decisions, presidential decrees, and direct orders from the Department of Defense mean nothing if Oklahoma doesn’t feel like complying. Yeah – Oklahoma doesn’t need the federal government! Except when all those tornadoes hit and they need some federal assistance…

Anyways, after getting a stern talking-to from the Pentagon, Gov. Mary Fallin did what any temper tantrum prone child would do and cut spousal benefits for the entire Oklahoma National Guard. So essentially, Fallin would rather deny every soldier benefits than grant a few gay ones the rights they have already been federally guaranteed.

As Gov. Mary Fallin puts it:

Oklahoma law is clear. The state of Oklahoma does not recognize same-sex marriages, nor does it confer marriage benefits to same-sex couples. The decision reached today allows the National Guard to obey Oklahoma law without violating federal rules or policies. It protects the integrity of our state constitution and sends a message to the federal government that they cannot simply ignore our laws or the will of the people.

Despite Fallin’s temper tantrum, Oklahoma National Guards – gay or straight – can still obtain spousal benefits – but only at federal facilities in Oklahoma, which could require couples to drive extended distances even when there are state facilities closer by.

If everyone is treated badly, it’s not discrimination, right? It’s terrible and twisted, but not discrimination! Just good old-fashioned narrow-mindedness.

Oklahoma Tornado: The Good and The Bad

oklahoma tornado

The search for survivors in Moore, Oklahoma is slowing down as rescuers continue to sift through the wreckage. The death count stands at 24 and no new survivors or bodies have been discovered since Monday.

The deadly tornado hit the Oklahoma town on Monday, damaging 2,400 homes and directly impacting 10,000 residents.

Some good news did come out of the wreckage though. While reliving her tornado story on television, Barbara Garcia made a heartwarming discovery – her dog, buried in the rubble (alive). It would have made a much better story if it was a cat, but Barbara still wept with joy as she freed her dog from the wreckage. “God answered not one of my prayers, but both,” Garcia said tearfully.

But not all Moore, Oklahoma residents were ready to praise God for saving them from the tornado, as Wolf Blitzer awkwardly discovered. When interviewing Rebecca Vitsmun, a Moore resident who escaped from her house with her 19-month-old son right before the twister ate it up, Blitzer blitz-attacked her with, “You’ve gotta thank the Lord, right? Do you thank the Lord for that split-second decision?” To which Rebecca awkwardly answered, “I — I’m actually an atheist.” Blitzer fail!

In other Oklahoma tornado news, President Barack Obama has pledged to give Oklahoma everything it needs to gets itself back together and sent FEMA’s director down to check things out.

“Our focus as a nation is on the urgent work of rescue and rebuilding that lies ahead,” the President said from the White House.

Oklahoma’s Republican senators James Inhofe and Tom Coburn are in a bit of an awkward situation though. Both Republicans are known for being fiscally uptight and have repeatedly voted against funding disaster aid for other parts of the country – most notably Superstorm Sandy.

Tough situation: on the one hand you don’t want to seem like a hypocritical dick who only favours red states, but on the other hand you don’t want to be the dick who withholds much needed disaster relief funding from your constituents who just lost all their possessions.

Senator James Inhofe decided to take the “BUT IT’S NOT THE SAAAME!” approach, arguing that you can’t compare Hurricane Sandy relief and aid for the Oklahoma tornado because the two are “totally different.” According to Inhofe, the Sandy bill had way too much pork – something that would never happen in Oklahoma, a top pork producing state.

Senator Tom Coburn decided to stay true to his fiscally responsible ways, announcing Oklahoma will only get aid if the cost is offset by spending cuts elsewhere. So basically before any disaster relief can happen, Democrats must agree to more spending cuts to programs like Social Security and Medicare. Ouch. But I suppose this is coming from a man tried to block a bill in 2010 that helped 9/11 first responders pay their lingering medical bills from the pollution they inhaled after the attack. One thing’s for sure, Coburn may be a dick, but a hypocrite, he ain’t.
