City of Paris to Sue Fox News Over “No-Go Zones”

Paris Sues Fox

Paris is planning to sue Fox News after derisive on-air comments damaged “the honor and image of Paris”.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo announced the lawsuit during an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.

“When we’re insulted, and when we’ve had an image, then I think we’ll have to sue, I think we’ll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed,” Hidalgo said. “The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honor of Paris has been prejudiced.”

Hidalgo is upset with the news channel’s portrayal of life in Paris’ Muslim neighborhoods in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks – but more specifically with its coverage of supposed “no-go zones” for non-Muslims in certain European cities. The network’s morning show, Fox & Friends, even went so far as to produce a map showing the “no-go zones” where non-Muslims are not welcome.

On another Fox show, a guest who was identified as a security expert claimed that in Britain “there are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim, where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in”. He also claimed that in parts of London, “Muslim religious police” beat and injure “anyone who doesn’t dress according to Muslim religious attire.”

To which British Prime Minister David Cameron replied:

“When I heard this, frankly, I choked on my porridge and I thought it must be April Fools Day… This guy is clearly a complete idiot.”

Critics have accused Fox News of using the controversial “no-go zones” idea to perpetuate a fearful narrative about Muslims. Wait… Fox News is engaging in anti-Muslim fear-mongering?! I can’t believe it! I can totally believe it.

But to be fair, over the weekend Fox News did apologize to “the people of France and England” for mistakenly suggesting that certain European cities have “no-go zones” where non-Muslims are not welcome. And they did make it clear that it’s actually America who has “no-go zones” where Muslims are not welcomed – otherwise referred to as the Fox News studios.

Trey Radel Shows Rob Ford How To Deal With A Cocaine Scandal… And Other News

 Trey Radel Cocaine Scandal

Take note Rob Ford – this is how you deal with a cocaine scandal.

On Wednesday, Florida Rep. Trey Radel announced at a press conference that he would be taking a leave of absence from his congressional seat in Washington amid the news that he was busted for cocaine possession. Radel, who was sentenced to one year of supervised probation, admitted he was an addict and also announced he plans to enter an inpatient treatment center and donate his salary to charity. “I’m owning up to my actions. I’m taking responsibility. I’m taking it very publicly,” Radel told a group of reporters at a news conference Wednesday night. He should also give a shout out to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford for giving him a foolproof “what not to do” cocaine scandal guide. ABC News

Negotiations Continue On Capitol Hill One Day Before Debt Limit DeadlineFilibuster no more! In a tight 52-48 vote, the Senate decided to change the filibuster rules in order to limit Republicans’ power to filibuster the president’s executive-branch appointments and judicial nominations. Senate Democrats say the need for the change is “obvious” but Republicans say it’s just a “power grab” by the Democrats. Obama was pretty psyched though. “A deliberate and determined effort to obstruct everything is not normal,” he said of the persistent gridlock in Congress. “This isn’t obstruction on substance or qualifications, it’s just to gum up the works.” Washington Post

kayla-mendozaProving that social media is the best thing to happen to prosecutors since lie detectors, a drunk driver tweeted “2 drunk 2 care” before causing a horrific car crash that killed two women.  20-year-old Kayla Mendoza of Florida (obvs) crashed into another car while going the wrong way on the Sawgrass Expressway at 2am on Saturday. Mendoza, who calls herself “pothead princess” on Twitter, tweeted about her drunken state hours before the crash. She is now in serious condition at Broward Health North, where she is probably sober enough by now to care. Miami New Times

apple-vs-samsungDon’t mess with Apple! A federal jury determined on Thursday that Samsing must pay Apple $290 million for infringing on a number of Apple patents involving technology used in iPhones and iPads. Apple was asking for $380 million and Samsung was offering $52 million – so my mathematical skills tell me that Apple won. But Apple says its not about the money – its about sticking it to the companies trying to rip off their technology.  “For Apple, this case has always been about more than patents and money,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in a statement. “It has been about innovation and the hard work that goes into inventing products that people love.” USA Today

Shooting Suspect ParisThe three-day manhunt for the Paris shooting suspect is over. Police have identified the man responsible responsible for firing a gun at a Paris TV station, newspaper office, and bank headquarters, which left a photographer’s assistant in a critical condition. French authorities took the suspect, Abdelhakim Dekhar, into custody where he will face charges of attempted murder and kidnapping. Dekhar was previously imprisoned in 1998 for four years for taking part in another series of Paris shootings that left four people dead. I don’t want to say France has a lax judicial system, but they probably shouldn’t have let him out… Maybe this time he’ll get more than 4 years? Al Jazeera

Nazi Art Owner Refused To Give Up Loot… And Other News

Nazi Art Collector

Who knew Nazi art owners would be difficult to deal with?

The German art collector found to have a Nazi art trove in his Munich apartment says he isn’t willing to return any of the looted art to previous owners, including pieces taken from Jews. 80-year-old Cornelius Gurlitt’s wartime stash, comprised of 1,400 works – many of which were believed to be destroyed – is thought to be worth $1.35 billion. Gurlitt’s father was a Nazi art dealer who sold art that had been confiscated or bought by the Nazis – but apparently he kept quite a few for himself and passed them down to his son who now refuses to give them up. “I won’t freely give anything back, no, no,” Cornelius Gurlitt, 80, said to German weekly Der, “When I’m dead they can do with them what they want.” Well, that shouldn’t be too long from now. Wall Street Journal

PAris GunmanThe manhunt is on – Paris style – after a gunman opened fire at a newspaper office, shooting a photographer’s assistant twice. The gunmen then fled the scene and forced a motorist to drive him to the Champs Elysees. Another gunman – or very possibly the same gunman – also opened fire at the bank Societe Generale, but there were no injuries reported. In another incident on Friday – which may or may not be related – a gunman broke into BFMTV on Friday and threatened journalists with a gun before leaving. Either this guy’s been really busy over the last few days or a lot of people in Paris hate journalists. BBC News

Shocked LionsLion on lion violence at the Dallas Zoo! Every cat owner’s worst nightmare happened at the Dallas Zoo on Sunday when one of the lions attacked and killed a lioness in the exhibit. A 5-year-old lioness was bitten on the neck by one of the male lions and died after about 10 minutes. Zoo officials are baffled over the incident, which occurred in full view of zoo visitors. “I would have to think something caused the males to react that they don’t normally see every day,” the zoo’s vice president of animal operations and welfare said. “Lions can be aggressive, but they don’t kill each other.” For now, officials say the male and female lions will be placed in separate exhibits until they can figure out what the problem was. Zimmerman ViolenceSpeaking of domestic violence, Neighbourhood Watch’s Poster Boy George Zimmerman has been arrested in Florida on domestic violence charges after allegedly pointing a gun at his girlfriend. The incident, which took place at his unnamed girlfriend’s home in central Florida, isn’t the first time police have been called in to settle a Zimmerman-related domestic dispute. Earlier this summer police investigated a domestic dispute between Zimmerman and his wife Shellie Zimmerman after she filed for divorce. Quick temper? Check. Reckless use of a gun? Check. No jail time served? Check. Sounds like Zimmerman! CNN

Rob Ford Knocks Over CouncillorToronto Mayor Rob Ford has issued another apology – this time for knocking over a City Council member and giving her a fat lip. As the Toronto City Council debated limiting the cracked-out mayor’s powers even further in the wake of the ongoing crack scandal, Rob Ford bulldozed into Toronto City Councillor Pam McConnell, knocking her off her feet. Ford wasn’t rushing over because someone was waving around a crack-laced Big Mac as many first assumed. No, he was rushing over to help out his brother, Doug Ford, who was apparently in an altercation/shouting match with a heckler. “It was a complete accident,” Ford said. “I sincerely apologize.” NBC News
