Is Qatar’s World Cup Worse Than 9/11?

Qatar World Cup Migrants

Soccer vs. Terrorism: Qatar’s World Cup is expected to take more lives than 9/11.

A recent report released by the International Trade Union Confederation says that an estimated 4,000 migrant workers will die before the 2022 World Cup. The reports estimates are based on the migrant mortality trends currently seen in Qatar.  The working and living conditions of the 1.4 million migrant workers living in Qatar, many of whom are there to build stadiums and infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup, are so bad that overworked migrant workers are dropping like flies in the sweltering Qatari heat – a much slower death than a quick plane crash. Girl Scout RecordAn Oklahoma City Girl Scout has broken the Girl Scout cookie-selling record – without the help of drugs. 12 year-old Katie Francis sold 18,107 boxes of cookies in seven weeks, breaking the national record and smoking 13 year-old Danielle Lei, who famously set up shop outside a San Francisco marijuana shop hoping to cash in on stoners looking for a munchies fix. Katie said the secret of her success is asking everyone she meets to buy a box: “There are three ingredients to the cookie sale. It takes lots of time, commitment and asking everybody I see.” It’s as easy as ABC! Always be closing. BBC News

muslim-brotherhoodEgypt appears to be weeding out the Muslim Brotherhood – and by weeding out, I mean handing out death sentences. On Monday more than 500 members of the now-illegal Muslim Brotherhood were sentenced to death by an Egyptian court. The charges ranged from murdering a police officer to attacking police to supporting ousted President Mohamed Morsi. Then on Tuesday, the same court began the mass trial of 683 Islamist suspects, all suspected of murder and sabotage. Considering the trial of the first 500 members only lasted two days, I suspect there will be an increase in death sentences by the end of the week. Reuters

judge-joe-brown-arrestedIf anyone should know how not to behave in a courtroom, it’s Judge Joe Brown. But the TV personality appears to have forgotten his 15 years of trashtastic television experience and was arrested and sentenced to five days in jail for contempt of court. Brown was in court to represent a client in a child-support case, but he completely lost it when he found out his case was not on the afternoon docket. Judge Joe “incited a near riot” and became verbally abusive toward the judge, challenging his authority and causing a ruckus. He was reportedly held in contempt five times before being forcibly removed from the courtroom. Maybe he can get Judge Judy to put in a good word for him? Hollywood Life

The Accidental Vagina: Qatar’s 2022 World Cup Stadium Looks A Little Familiar…

Vagina Stadium Qatar

Designs for Qatar’s first World Cup stadium, Al-Wakrah, have been released and it bears a striking resemblance to a very large vagina.

The architectural firm that designed the 2022 World Cup stadium based the building on a traditional pearl fishing Qatari dhow boat, but with its shiny, pinkish tinge, its labia-like side attachments and its large opening in the middle, it’s clearly a vagina.

The stadium, with a capacity of 40,000 people, is expected to be completed by 2018. Hassan al-Thawadi, the general secretary of Qatar’s 2022 committee says Al-Wakrah is the first of six stadiums already in the latter stages of the design process.

No word yet if the other designs will also feature vagina-like traits but I say bring it on! There’s enough penis imagery in buildings today – it’s time to usher in a new era of architecture: vaginas.

Aside from being an eye pleaser, the vagina shaped stadium serves another (accidental?) purpose. It’s taken away from the controversy surrounding Qatari labour conditions. Qatar has faced criticism over allegations of migrant construction worker exploitation. According to Amnesty International, these workers are often subjected to non-payment of wages, dangerous working conditions, squalid accommodation, and are sometimes referred to as “animals”.

Yes, hundreds of migrant workers have been slaving away under the hot Qatari sun for this giant vagina. But not to worry, the building designers plan to install a cooling system in the giant open-air vagina to offset the extreme summer temperatures. No one wants to sit in a sweaty vagina watching men play with their balls.

Qatar 2022 World Cup Organizers Have Modern Day Slaves

Qatar Slaves

People from a rich Middle Eastern country treating migrant workers as slaves?? Yeah, I can believe it.

The Guardian reported that Nepalese workers in Qatar “face exploitation and abuses that amount to modern-day slavery”. Apparently these slaves are dying at a rate of almost one per day – mainly young men succumbing to heart attacks after working round the clock in 45 degree weather.

The investigation also found that forced labour was used in some World Cup projects, passports and IDs were confiscated, salaries delayed/not paid for several months, and no access to free drinking water.

“We’d like to leave, but the company won’t let us,” said one Nepalese migrant who is working on the construction of the 90,000-seater stadium that will host the World Cup final. “I’m angry about how this company is treating us, but we’re helpless. I regret coming here, but what to do? We were compelled to come just to make a living, but we’ve had no luck.”

To make matters worse, almost all migrant workers owe huge amounts of money to recruitment agents in Nepal who got them their job.  So when you combine debts with non-payment of wages and confiscation of documents, it becomes a little like modern-day slavery.

And to make matters even worse (for Qatar’s reputation), this is in sharp contrast to what is happening in the lead up to the 2014 Brazil World Cup. Brazil is taking men who, in their previous jobs, worked in conditions that were classified as slave labour and is employing them to work on World Cup construction. The whole thing is part of a state-sponsored program that trains former “slaves” in construction skills and helps them adjust to the regular workforce.

Qatar – what do you have to say for yourself?

The Qatar 2022 World Cup organizers say they are “appalled” by the findings of the migrant workers investigation and insists that  “the health, safety, well-being and dignity of every worker … is of the utmost importance.”

Fifa called for an immediate investigation into the deaths of dozens of Nepalese workers and the mistreatment of migrant workers in general.

The 2022 World Cup is already under scrutiny because of concerns about the effects Qatar’s disgusting summer heat could have on soccer players. If 20-year-old migrant workers/slaves are dropping dead left right and center, who knows what could happen to the precious athletes…
