The Republican Infighting Continues: Rand Paul Calls Mitt Romney “Yesterday’s News”

Mitt Paul

After Mitt Romney told a senior Republican he “almost certainly will” run for president and spent the weekend reviving his national network of political supporters and donors, Rand Paul called his potential rival for the 2016 GOP nomination “yesterday’s news”. Well, he kind of has a point there…

The junior senator from Kentucky criticized Mitt Romney for being too liberal for the Republican Party in 2016. Rand Paul told a Fox News Radio interviewer Monday that Romney’s promise to be a “conservative alternative” to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush won’t go over well and the former Massachusetts governor’s time has passed.

“If (Mitt Romney) runs to the right of Jeb Bush, he’ll still be to the left of the rest of the party, so it may be a difficult spot to occupy,” Paul said.

“Look, I like Governor Romney, I like him personally, I think he is a good person, I think he was a great businessman,” Paul said. “But you know that’s yesterday’s news.”

Paul went on: “I think he did a lot of things right, but in the end you got to have a bigger constituency, you got to get new people, you got to attract new people to win and I think it’s time that probably the party is going to be looking for something fresh and new.”

Like Rand Paul? I’m not sure what Paul is complaining about – if Romney runs slightly to the right of Jeb Bush, he and Bush (and maybe Chris Christie too?) could be competing both for the same financial backers and for the Republican middle ground – which leaves Rand Paul free to duke it out with Tea Party darling Ted Cruz for the crazy vote. If anything, Rand Paul should be thanking Romney for muddling up the Republican middle, not calling him “yesterday’s news”.

Romney, who won some of the Republican primary contests in 2008 but was ultimately beaten by John McCain, went on to lose the presidential election to Barack Obama in 2012. But this time around, Romney is determined to learn from his past mistakes – i.e. not to alienating Hispanics, poor people, binders of women – basically anyone who isn’t a white male millionaire. Who knows – maybe third time’s the charm?

Crisis in the Ukraine: Crimea Votes to Join Russia

Crimea Referendum

Crimea’s parliament declared the region an independent state and formally asked to become part of Russia, following its residents’ overwhelming vote Sunday to break away from Ukraine.

According to Crimean officials, 97% of Crimea voted to join Russia. While 97% isn’t as high as Kim Jong Un’s 100% of the votes, it’s still pretty high. Despite the fact that Russian military officials heavily guarded the voting process and residents were only given two options on the ballots (join Russia or seek greater autonomy within Ukraine), it seems pretty safe to say that the majority of Crimea is pro-Putin. It’s also pretty safe to say that the West only supports democracy when people vote the way they want.

The U.S. and European Union do not consider the vote legitimate, angrily claiming it violates Ukraine’s constitution and took place under pressure from the Russian military. As a result, the western powers have announced travel bans and asset freezes against a number of officials from Russia and Ukraine who are seen as having played a key role in the referendum.

But amid all the Western hatred against Russia, one U.S. politician is breaking away from the pack and siding with Putin: Ron Paul. The former congressman said on Saturday that Crimea should be able to break away and join Russia, arguing that this “is our how our country was started. It was the right of self-determination, and voting, and asking and even fighting for it, and seceding.” Paul went on to say the U.S. had engineered a coup in Kiev against the Yanukovych government and U.S. sanctions against Moscow are an “act of war.”

Meanwhile, his son Rand Paul, who’s got a 2016 White House bid to worry about, has called for stiff penalties against Russia and declared: “If I were president, I wouldn’t let Vladimir Putin get away with it!”

But Putin has said he will respect the will of the people in Crimea.

“The results of the referendum in Crimea clearly showed that residents of Crimea see their future only as part of Russia,” the deputy speaker of the State Duma, Sergei Neverov said.

The parliament in Moscow intends to pass legislation allowing Crimea to join Russia “in the very near future”, sanctions or no sanctions, Rand Paul or Ron Paul.

Rand Paul Defends A Subhuman Mongrel… And Other News

Rand Paul Subhuman Mongrel

Rand Paul sticking up for President Obama?? Has hell frozen over? Are pigs flying? No, Ted Nugent’s just spewing out verbal diarrhea again.

The Kentucky Senator denounced the right-wing rocker on Thursday for calling President Obama a “subhuman mongrel.” And not just any subhuman mogrel – a communist-raised, communist-educated, communist- nurtured subhuman mongrel. Rand Paul tweeted that Nugent should apologize, saying that his “derogatory description of President Obama is offensive and has no place in politics.” Meanwhile Ted Nugent is heading out on the campaign trail with the Texas gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott. His democratic competitor, Wendy Davis, has called Abbott’s decision to allow the retired rocker to campaign for him “repulsive”. Washington Post

ArizonaOh Arizona… The Republican-dominated Arizona state Legislature sent a controversial bill to the Gov. Jan Brewer’s desk Thursday designed to allow business the right to discriminate against LGBT people. More specifically, the bill would allow individuals, corporations, and religious bodies to use religious beliefs to defend themselves in a discrimination lawsuit. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Steve Yarbrough (R), claims that the legislation protects the “religious freedom” of private business owners. I guess the Grand Canyon is now only the second biggest hole in Arizona… Opponents believe the bill is just Arizona’s clever attempt to codify bigotry into law. If the bill is signed, Christian bakers, wedding photographers, florists and other wedding related professionals can turn away same-sex couples on account of their religious beliefs/bigotry. MSNBC

ukrainian-flagAfter a particularly bloody week that left at least 75 protesters dead in Kiev, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and opposition leaders have signed a tentative deal to “settle the crisis”. The deal includes early presidential elections, a trimming of Yanukovych’s powers, electoral reform, and a coalition government. The compromise came after all-night talks with opposition party leaders and EU representatives. While the deal was approved by opposition leaders Vitali Klitschko, Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Oleh Tyahnibok, some protesters still feel like it isn’t enough and justice should be brought to Yanukovych, who ordered a vicious crackdown on protesters that left more than 100 people dead. “A coalition government is good, it’s a step in the right direction and it is what we wanted,” said one protester, “But there is no way Yanukovych can stay in office till December – he is a murderer now and must be prosecuted as a murderer.” BBC News

Obama lamaChina threatens drama if Obama meets the Dalai Lama. President Obama and the Dalai Lama are set to meet privately at the White House on Friday to practice some yoga and talk about China behind their back (I presume). The Tibetan leader is on a three-week tour of the US to drum up some support for his ‘middle way’ approach of neither assimilation nor independence for Tibetans in China. China, the Dalai Lama’s sworn nemeisis, accused Obama of letting the Tibetan use the White House as a podium to promote anti-Chinese activities. The Chinese government warned that the meeting will “inflict grave damages” on their relationship. But considering US presidents have been receiving the exiled Dalai Lama in the capitol for the past three decades, China is probably bluffing. What are they going to do to America anyways? Call in their debts? Oh crap… The Guardian

Miami_Dolphins3Looks like the Miami Dolphins need to schedule some sensitivity training in between plays… The Miami Dolphins fired offensive-line coach Jim Turner and head athletics trainer Kevin O’Neill after the National Football League’s investigation into the bullying of player Jonathan Martin. The investigative report stated there was a “pattern of harassment” against two Dolphins linemen and an assistant trainer, all targets of vicious taunts and racist insults. The offensive line coach reportedly did nothing to stop the abuse and even participated in the bullying by giving one lineman a male sex doll to mock him. Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said he was unaware of the bullying but guaranteed that the team will have a better workplace environment in 2014 – which is a promise that shouldn’t be too hard to keep. Rand Paul Wants Everyone To Forget The Republican War On Women And Remember Monica Lewinsky

Monica Lewinsky Rand Paul

Refuting the Democrats’ claim that Republicans are launching a “war on women,” Rand Paul suggested people should take a closer look a Bill Clinton and his “predatory behaviour” towards Monica Lewinsky.

Forget the GOP’s repeated attacks on family planning funding and legal abortion, their controversial comments about women, rape and birth control, and their effort to remove contraception from health insurance plans! If any party is launching a war on women, it’s the Democrats because Bill Clinton had an affair nearly 20 years ago.

“The Democrats — one of their big issues is they’ve concocted this, ‘Republicans are committing a war on women,'” the Kentucky Republican said on NBC’s Meet The Press. “One of the work place laws and rules that I think are good is that bosses shouldn’t prey on young interns in their office. I think really the media seems to have given President Clinton a pass on this. He took advantage of a girl that was 20-years-old and an intern in his office. There is no excuse for that and that is predatory behavior.”

Well, Monica Lewinsky was actually 22 and held a paid position for most of her time at the White House. And I probably wouldn’t call public humiliation and the threat of impeachment a complete pass…. but go on…

“Someone who takes advantage of a young girl in their office — I mean really, and then they have the gall to stand up and say that Republicans are having a war on women? So yes, I think it’s a factor. Now it’s not Hillary’s fault. But it is a factor in judging Bill Clinton in history.”

So, Bill Clinton’s two decades old affair is irrelevent to the upcoming presidential campaign and Hillary should be judged on her own reputation and accomplishments? Nope, not in Rand Paul’s mind!

“It’s hard enough to separate one [Clinton] from the other,” Paul said, suggesting Bill Clinton’s behaviour will be forever linked to potential Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

So next time the GOP says something condescending or demeaning towards women (later today?), let’s all remember Monica Lewinsky. And while we’re at it, let’s all remember that time Rand Paul kidnapped a college classmate and forced her to take bongs hits.

Side note: Here’s a true story about a Rand Paul fan.

I was out and about in downtown Toronto one night (the last place you’d expect to find a hardcore Rand Paul enthusiast), and some guy approached my friend “Sara”. The discussion turned to politics and he began preaching about Rand Paul and all his terrific economic policies. BUT, because he was talking to a woman he had to explain them using makeup and jewelry analogies (no joke). I mean, there’s no way a woman could ever understand Economics 101 without a makeup analogy! Admittedly, he was on heroin and appeared to lack any critical insight, but I thought “this guy gets it.” He knows what it means to be a true Rand Paul enthusiast; it’s a not-so-clever combination of unrelenting free market values and condescending remarks to women.

Morsi: I’m the Real President!!! And Other News…

Morsi President

Someone is feeling a little delusional… Ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi’s murder trial began today and Morsi is not having it.

Morsi defiantly told the court he is the “legitimate president” and as a result the case is illegitimate. Morsi, who, along with 14 other Muslim Brotherhood figures, faces charges of inciting the killing of protesters outside the presidential palace in 2012, also refused to wear the white prison uniform. He and his 14 codefendants, who were being held in a cage in the courtroom, chanted “illegal, illegal” as the court proceedings began. When asked to give his name, the former president said, “I am Dr Mohammed Morsi, the president of the republic. I am Egypt’s legitimate president. You have no right to conduct a trial into presidential matters.” While the judge didn’t totally buy it, he did adjourn the trial until January. BBC News

Rob FordToronto Mayor Rob Ford may be a heavy drinker known to make a fool of himself in public, but he’s no crack addict! At least, according to him. Last week, Toronto police Chief Bill Blair revealed that investigators have recovered a mysterious video of Rob Ford that shows him engaged in activities “consistent” with the media’s widespread crack allegations. Ford then used his weekly radio show to apologize for “mistakes” and drunken behaviour – but insisted he does not smoke crack and will NOT leave office.  “I’m not an alcoholic, I’m not a drug addict,” Ford said. “If I had a problem, I’d be the first one to say I’m not fit to run the city.” After admitting he enjoys a “few cocktails,” Ford added that he will try to limit his drinking in the future. “Have I drank a little too much at times? You’re absolutely right. Am I going to curb that? Absolutely I’m going to curb that.” So… he does have a drinking problem? CBC News

Rand PaulThe Rand Paul plagiarism accusations continue this week with the latest claim that the Kentucky Senator took 1,318 words of his book Government Bullies from a 2003 Heritage Foundation report. Although he had included a link to the Heritage Foundation in the footnotes, he forgot that he was supposed to paraphrase, not use the exact same words. Since it’s the third plagiarism accusation in a week for Rand Paul, he decided to respond… by challenging the footnote police to a duel. Paul said he takes accusations of plagiarism “as an insult” and “if dueling were legal in Kentucky, if they keep it up, you know it’d be a duel challenge.” He also insisted that the “spoken word” should bot be held to the same standard as “if you’re giving a scientific paper” and that 98 percent of his speeches were unrehearsed. And the other 2 percent come straight from Wikipedia. Politico

King TutWell, I’m glad that’s finally solved. The story of King Tut’s mysterious death has now come to an end. A strange end involving spontaneous combustion… but an end nonetheless. King Tut died in 1323 BC and was found several years later in 1922. Now British experts believe they have uncovered the cause of the young pharaoh’s death – a chariot crash. After performing a “vitural autopsy,” researchers concluded that a chariot crashed into him when he was kneeling – presumably while praying or giving a BJ. But that still didn’t explain the burned flesh on his bones. Turns out a botched mummification caused the body to spontaneously combust while in the tomb. Terrible pun in 3..2..1.. looks like this cold case just got hot. USA Today

Nazi LootNazi loot found! Hundreds of works of art by Picasso, Matisse and other famous artists, which were seized by the Nazis, have been found among piles of rotting groceries in a German apartment. The artwork, reportedly worth more than $1 billion was discovered by Germany investigators when the son of Hildebrand Gurlitt, a modern art specialist recruited by the Nazis, was found carrying a suspiciously large amount of cash. Cornelius Gurlitt, 80, inherited the paintings when his father died and kept them hidden in darkened rooms in his “disheveled, food-littered apartment in Munich,” selling one off whenever he needed money. Cornelius claims he was “unaware” of the origins of the paintings – which either makes him an incredibly stupid person or an incredibly bad liar. Although the paintings were uncovered two years ago, German authorities are just now releasing the details. Perhaps to coincide with a certain Hollywood movie…? NBC News

Rand Paul Plagiarizes From Wikipedia

Rand Paul Wikipedia

Rand Paul has been accused of plagiarizing parts of the speech he gave Monday at Liberty University in Virginia from Wikipedia.

MSNBC television show host Rachel Maddow broke the story, claiming Rand Paul stole four lines from a Wikipedia entry about the movie “Gattaca.”

“When you are running for president, a plagiarism scandal is not what you want on your resume, especially not something as embarrassing as plagiarizing Wikipedia, but that is what Rand Paul has on his hands now,” Maddow said.

First, why was Rand Paul talking about a sci-fi movie? Well, he was using it as a cautionary tale, warning the audience that America could devolve into a society where genetic discrimination blah blah blah something anti-abortion.

Now, some of you Rand Paul lovers out there (Ron Paul?) are probably thinking, Rand Paul didn’t plagiarize from Wikipedia, he probably just wrote the Wikipedia entry himself after his speech went over so well! FALSE. The revision history of the Gattaca Wikipedia page revealed that no changes were made after Paul’s speech.

Also, this isn’t the first time Rand Paul/Rand Paul’s disgraced speechwriter has used movie exerts from Wikipedia to make a point. In a June speech to a bunch of Hispanic business leaders, he gave an almost word-for-word recitation of the Wikipedia entry for the movie “Stand and Deliver,” a film about an inner city math teacher.

Rand Paul’s office has refused to talk to anyone about the Wikipedia accusations… probably because they no longer have a speechwriter to fake a decent apology.

Rand Paul Loves Black People… And Other News.

Rand Paul Howard U

Rand Paul loves black people, but they don’t love him back.

Kentucky Senator and filibuster expert Rand Paul, spoke to students at Howard University, a historically black college in Washington, D.C, on Wednesday. The speech seemed to be an attempt at racial outreach but came across sounding more like the “Accidental Racist”. Rand Paul explained the students that the Republican party was at one point very a strong supporter of civil rights for African Americans. But then he seemed to forget about the GOP’s relationship with black voters for the last 50 years. As Jon Stewart put it: “You can’t just yada yada yada the last 60 Republican years. A Republican freed the slaves, gave black people the vote, yada yada yada and now all blacks vote Democratic. I mean, what the hell.’” The Daily Beast

Glee School ShootingSchools shootings are now so popular that even Glee is covering them. Thursday night’s episode, entitled “Shooting Star” (great pun, Glee!), features a school shooting.  The  show began with a disclaimer reading “This episode of ‘Glee’ addresses the topic of school violence. Viewer discretion is advised.” Spoiler alert: it was the Down syndrome kid who shot the gun and no one was injured.  Lesson learned: don’t ever give kids with Down syndrome guns. ABC News

FarrahHow to not make a sex tape: do it on a set with a porn star, have it professionally produced and call it a ‘sex tape’. That’s what Teen Mom Farrah Abraham has done. In what some (me) are calling the third stupidest decision of her life (the first being getting pregnant at 16 and the second being waxing her toddler’s eyebrows), Farrah made a porno with porn actor James Deen.  However, she initially claimed it was a sex tape, trying to add a few extra minutes on to her original fifteen. But after James Deen opened his big mouth, Farrah finally conceded that the video was in fact scripted and shot by professionals. Her excuse?  She wanted to immortalize her youthful physique. I guess that’s as good a reason as any. Daily Mail

Hitler YouthThink like a Nazi. Argue why Jews are evil. That’s what students in an Albany High School English class were asked to do for an assignment. Students were asked to watch and read Nazi propaganda and convince their teacher of their Nazi loyalty. The assignment read: “You must argue that Jews are evil, and use solid rationale from government propaganda to convince me of your loyalty to the Third Reich!” A third of the student refused to complete the assignment and the Albany Superintendent issued an apology. “I would apologize to our families,” she said. “I don’t believe there was malice or intent to cause any insensitivities to our families of Jewish faith.” I totally would have gotten an A. Teen SuicideWhat not to do after you rape someone: post pictures of the attack online. Three teenage boys were arrested Thursday in California for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl who committed suicide after pictures of the incident surfaced online. This case is similar to the Steubenville, Ohio rape case where two football players were convicted of rape for assaulting a girl who had too much to drink and posting photos on social media sites. More recently, a Canadian teen committed suicide after she was allegedly gang-raped and bullied after photos were distributed.  CNN

Madonna MalawiMalawi’s President has a total hard-on for Madonna. A government statement was put out on Wednesday criticizing the pop singer for demanding VIP treatment, being a big bully and exaggerating her contributions to the country. Malawi’s President Joyce Banda claims she knew nothing about it and is reportedly furious at her public relations staff. Despite this, there is no sign of an official apology being issued. BBC News
