Prince William Quits his Job… And Other News

Prince William

Prince William: I quit!

Buckingham Palace announced Thursday that Prince William is leaving the Royal Air Force to devote more time to public service. Devote more time to the public service? So… attending charity events and touring the world by private jet as an ambassador? Apparently yes, but the palace has been careful not to describe his new role as that of a “full-time royal”. And as for his charity of choice? “United for Wildlife”. Buckingham Palace released a statement saying William would be  “…expanding his work in the field of conservation, particularly in respect of protecting endangered species and habitat..” William has been a search and rescue helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force for the past three years, so preserving elephants and cheetahs will be… different. Hang the RapistsThe sentencing is in for the Delhi gang rape case, and the victim’s family will be pleased – death sentences for all! The four men convicted of a brutal gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in Delhi, were sentenced Friday to die by hanging. The crowd outside the courthouse erupted into triumphant cheers as the sentences were announced. They were really pushing for that death sentence – some were holding up makeshift nooses and pictures of hanging bodies. The victim (posthumously obvs) was also hoping for the death penalty. Before her death she had told a court official that her attackers “should be burned alive.” Hanging, burning alive – close enough. New York Times

NJ Boardwalk FireFunTown Pier is no longer fun after a fire decided to eat up a section of boardwalk along the shore of Seaside Park, New Jersey, which was ironically spared by Hurricane Sandy last October. About 100 firefighters were still on the scene and luckily there were no civilian injuries BUT 30 businesses were destroyed in the fire, including the ice cream stand where the fire started. Upon first seeing the damage, New Jersey Governor Christie said, “I feel like I want to throw up.” That’s how I feel when I go to the Jersey Shore too. CNN

Shark FinNo more shark fin soup for you! Hong Kong’s government has announced it will stop serving shark fin and bluefin tuna at official functions following years of lobbying by conservation groups. “The exclusion of these… items from official menus is a start and also serves as an example of raising public education and awareness on sustainability,” a government spokesman said in a press release. Hong Kong is one of the world’s biggest markets for shark fin, which is considered an Asian delicacy and is often served as a soup at expensive Chinese banquets/weddings. Your move, rest of China. Ayman-al-ZawahiriIn honour of the 12th anniversary of September 11th, Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has issued a heartfelt message calling for small-scale (or “lone-wolf”) attacks inside the U.S. Better than large-scale attacks I suppose. But not so fast – according to al-Zawahiri, a few attacks “here and there” would “bleed America economically by provoking it to continue in its massive expenditure on its security.” Noooooo! The speech, which was released online a day after the 9/11 anniversary, also praised the bombings in Boston in April and encouraged more of the same. Lovely. BBC News

Current Event Cat of the Day: Royal Baby

Current Event Cat - Royal Baby

Royal Baby Update: The heir is here!

Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a son into the world on Monday at 4:24 p.m. BST. The new parents are “doing well” and are preparing to leave St. Mary’s Hospital in London and present the royal baby — third in line to the British throne — to the world.

Meanwhile, Britain is going crazy. Gun salutes in Green Park and the Tower of London and the ringing of bells at Westminster Abbey started off the celebration. At Buckingham Palace, royal watchers, tourists, and everyone else in London are lining up in the rain to catch a fleeting glimpse of the bulletin announcing the arrival of the royal baby, which is being displayed on an easel. Even more are waiting outside the hospital hoping to see Wills, Kate and the royal baby as they leave. Speculation on the name of the royal baby is also in full force. Will it be George???? I bet it’ll be George.

And it’s not just Britain that is going nuts – it’s the Twittersphere. According to Twitter, the royal baby had more than two million mentions on Monday. The peak came at 8:37 p.m., when Buckingham Palace announced the boy’s birth, with 25,300 tweets per minute. Twitter doesn’t lie – you love the royal baby.

But enough about the royal baby – what about the coverage leading up to the birth of the royal baby? There were a lot of gems out there but here are a few faves:

1. CNN’s royal contributor Victoria Arbiter:

“This is how brilliant a royal Kate is,” Victoria Arbiter told CNN. “There are women throughout British royal family history that have panicked over not being able to deliver a boy, and here we are, Kate did it first time.”

Congrats on the 50/50 odds! Now here’s John Oliver mocking her endlessly:

2. BBC reporter Simon McCoy

Simon and his viewers are pretty much over the waiting game and have nothing left to report.

”Plenty more to come from here of course, none of it news, because that will come from Buckingham Palace. But that won’t stop us, we’ll see you later.”

“We’ll just wait and see, it could be tomorrow morning if all goes well today. Until then, we’re going to be speculating about this royal birth with no facts to hand at the moment.”

3. The Globe and Mail

The Globe asks: will the royal baby be a confident Leo or sensitive Cancer? Probably neither because astrological signs are bullshit.

4. And lastly, AccuWeather because not even the weather channel could pass up an opportunity to get in on the royal baby action.

AccuWeather begs the question: could a full moon or pressure changes have induced Middleton’s labor? In short: no – but thanks for reading.

Saudi Princess Charged with Human Trafficking

Meshael Alayban

Damn princesses think they can do whatever they want. A Saudi princess has been accused of holding a domestic servant against her will at her condo in California.

Meshael Alayban, 42, the Saudi princess who prosecutors said is one of the six wives of Saudi Prince Abdulrahman bin Nasser bin Abdulaziz al Saud, faces one felony count of human trafficking. If she’s just one of six wives, think how many other slaves there are out there!

Alayban was arrested after a 30-year-old Kenyan woman escaped her condo on Tuesday and made her way to the police. The Kenyan woman claims the original deal was 8 hours of work, 5 days a week, at $1,600 a month – so basically minimum wage. But after Alayban hired her, she took the woman’s passport, made her work twice as long and only paid her $220 a month.

My client was a slave to this woman,” said Steve Barick, a lawyer for the accuser.

“She wasn’t able to freely move about. She had her ability to move in and about the country taken away. She was intimidated. She was promised one thing when she was in another country and when she was brought here that was changed. She was overworked. She was underpaid.”

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said that the Kenyan woman was subjected to “forced labour,” and compared Saudi Princess Alayban to a slave owner.

“It’s been 150 years since the Emancipation Proclamation, and slavery has been unlawful in the United States, and certainly in California, all this time, and it’s disappointing to see it in use here,” said Rackauckas, who had requested that Alayban’s bail be set at $20 million.

Sadly, the bail didn’t get set quite that high. The princess was released on Thursday after paying a mere $5 million in bail. If she had just spent a fraction of the bail money on paying her employees she probably wouldn’t be in this mess. Something to think about Saudi princesses, something to think about.

Still, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Saudis (especially the princesses) treat their domestic slaves like crap. In 2002, Saudi princess Buniah al-Saud, who was living in Florida, was accused of pushing her maid down a flight of stairs and in 1995 another Saudi princess, Maha Al-Sudairi, allegedly beat a servant in front of sheriff’s deputies – which also happened in Florida…

Current Event Cat of the Day: Queen Beatrix

Current Event Cat - Dutch Queen Beatrix

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has abdicated the throne, handing it over to her son Willem-Alexander.

Princess Beatrix, formerly known as Queen Beatrix, signed the abdication deed on Tuesday after a 33-year reign. Beatrix, 75, announced her plans to step down back in January, citing that it was time for a new generation of royals to take over.

Willem-Alexander will be the first Dutch king since 1890. He was sworn in today as huge crowds of orange-clad partygoers celebrated in the streets. What kind of king will Willem-Alexander be? According to him he wants to “be a king that can bring society together, representative and encouraging in the 21st Century”. Well that sounds very generic.

Meanwhile, over in England, Prince Charles passive aggressively sat down at the royal breakfast table and slowly placed the newspaper headlines down for all to see.

Your move Queen Elizabeth.
