Current Event Cat of the Day: Texter Killer Also Texting

Texter Texting Texts

Oh the irony… It turns out that the crazed ex-cop who shot and killed a fellow movie-goer for texting in a Florida movie theater was also texting during the incident.

New documents reveal that Curtis Reeves, who is charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bail, texted his son, Matthew, just moments before his heated argument with the victim, Chad Oulson. Matthew told detectives he had texted his father to say he’d be late for the 1:20 p.m. showing of “Lone Survivor”, and received a text back from Reeves telling him that he and his wife were seated in the theater.

Just minutes after 71-year-old Curtis Reeves sent the text to his son, he confronted Chad Oulson, who was texting his daughter’s babysitter during the previews. One thing led to another… and before you know it popcorn was thrown and shots were fired. According to the arrest report, witnesses told police that Reeves “confronted the victim about texting during the movie previews and went to advise management. When the defendant returned additional words were exchanged between the victim and the defendant and the victim turned and threw a bag of popcorn at the defendant. Witnesses advised they did not observe any punches being thrown. The defendant removed a handgun and shot [Oulson] in the chest.”

When Matthew Reeves finally got to the theater about 15 minutes later to meet his parents, his father had already gone full crazy and shot Oulson. Reeves walked in just as the shots were fired and says he rushed to the victim and his wife’s aid.

The elder Reeves, a retired Tampa Police captain, told police that Chad Oulson attacked him and that he was reacting in self-defense when he pulled out his gun and shot him in the chest. Considering none of the witnesses recall that happening, I don’t think a jury’s going to buy his defense… although stranger things have happened in Florida murder cases.

Poking Holes In Your Girlfriend’s Condoms Might Not Be The Best Way To Save The Relationship

Poking Holes in Condoms

In fact, poking holes in your girlfriend’s condoms to trick her into getting pregnant and then later telling her about your plan might be the best way to ruin the relationship. Plus, according to the Supreme Court of Canada, it’s considered sexual assault.

The Canadian Supreme Court has upheld the sexual assault conviction of Craig Jaret Hutchinson, the notorious piercer of condoms.

Hutchinson, 43, secretly tampered with his girlfirend’s condoms back in 2006 to trick her into getting pregnant, ultimately saving their deteriorating months-long relationship. After the woman ended up getting pregnant, the Nova Scotia native revealed what he had done through a series of text messages. The girlfriend then made two calls: one to the abortion clinic and the other to the police.

Hutchison was subsequently charged with aggravated sexual assault but was acquitted by a trial judge, despite his “dastardly” actions. But determined prosecutors appealed the decision and he was later convicted at a second trial. He then appealed against that verdict but on Friday the Supreme Court shut him down.

“When a woman agrees to have sexual intercourse with a condom, she is consenting to a particular sexual activity; it is a different sexual activity than sexual intercourse without a condom,” the judges wrote in their unanimous decision Friday.

“The deliberate and undisclosed thwarting of her agreement as to how the intercourse is to take place turns the sexual activity into a non-consensual act, regardless of its consequences.”

Hutchison will now have to serve the remainder of his 18-month prison sentence and have his name placed on the national sex offender registry.

Current Event Cat of the Day: Oscar Pistorius’s Vomit

Current Event Cat - Vomits at Trial

Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial is in full swing but it’s proving too much for the Paralympic athlete to handle. After hearing the graphic details of (former) girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp’s wounds, Pistorius proceeded to vomit in the courtroom.

On Monday, Oscar Pistorius because so overwhelmed while listening to expert testimony about the autopsy of Reeva Steenkamp (whom he is accused of murdering) that he appeared visibly shaken and threw up repeatedly in the middle of court.

Unfortunately the proceeding cannot be televised because Prof. Gert Saayman, head of the forensic medicine department at the University of Pretoria, argued that the details of autopsy were “very personal in nature” and could “compromise the dignity of the deceased.” Well, they should at least release a courtroom sketch of the vomit incident.

Saayman told the court how Steenkamp was struck four times with bullets from Pistorius’s nine millimetre pistol, but as more details were discussed, Pistorius broke down, his shoulders shaking, and began to spew out some vomit.

While Saayman poked some holes in Pistorius’s timeline of the events, other testimony revealed that the athlete “had a big love” for guns.

Pistorius denies his murder charge, arguing that he shot his girlfriend through a locked toilet door by mistake because he believed she was an intruder. But the state is working on convincing the court that Pistorius and Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, reality TV star and law graduate, had an argument before the athlete fired the fatal shots.

If found guilty, the 27-year-old “blade runner” could face life in prison. And if found not guilty, Pistorius may want to think about an acting career. He seems to have a flair for the dramatic.

Michael Dunn Also Claims He Was The Victim Of Unarmed Teenagers

Michael Dunn

This week must be the week where middle-aged men who shot unarmed black teenagers declare that they are the real victim in the situation. A day after George Zimmerman claimed he was the victim in the Trayvon Martin shooting, it was revealed that Michael Dunn also considers himself a victim.

Back in 2012, Michael Dunn opened fire on a car of unarmed teenagers after they refused to turn down their “thug music” and allegedly called him a cracker. Dunn, who ended up killing 17-year-old Jordan Davis, argued that he fired at the teens after they threatened him and raised a shotgun or something that resembled one. The only problem? No shotgun was found in the SUV.

Shortly after Michael Dunn was arrested, he made a series of calls from jail, which prosecutors just released on Tuesday. In the recorded jailhouse calls, Dunn compares himself to a rape victim and tells his fiancée that the police were trying to blame him for the shooting when he was only defending himself. The Florida software designer can be heard telling his fiancée, “I’m the [expletive deleted] victim here. I was the one who was victimized.”

“So not to wallow in, you know, despair or anything, but you know I was thinking a lot about this today and I was like I’m, I’m the victim here,” Dunn continued. “I was the one that was being preyed upon and I fought back.”

Dunn then compared himself to a rape victim – because why not?

“Police used to think when a chick got raped going, ‘Oh, it’s her fault because of the way she dressed.’ I’m like, ‘So it’s my fault [laughing] because I asked them to turn their music down. I got attacked and I fought back because I didn’t want to be a victim and now I’m in trouble. I refused to be a victim and now I’m incarcerated.”

The jury didn’t quite get the “rape victim vibe” from Dunn though and on Saturday they convicted him of three counts of attempted second-degree murder for shooting at three of Davis’ friends. However, the jury was undecided about the first-degree murder charge for Davis’ death. He will likely face a retrial for the murder charge, but considering each attempted second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, it doesn’t really matter. Except I guess it sends the message that if you shoot an unarmed black teenager in Florida, you better make sure you kill them – otherwise you’ll have to serve prison time.

Amanda Knox Found Guilty of Murder. Again. And Other News…

Amanda Knox

Third trial’s the charm? On Thursday afternoon, an Italian court found Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito guilty of the murder of Knox’s British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2007.

The court sentenced the American to 28 years and six months in prison for the murder of Meredith Kercher. Amanda Knox did not attend the retrial, but kept up to date on its proceeding from the comfort of her house in Seattle, where she’s lived since her sentence was overturned in 2011 for “lack of evidence.” It’s unlikely that the U.S. will extradite her to back Italy where she previously spent four years in prison, but she’ll never be able to vacation in Tuscany again. Scarlett SodaScarlett Johansson has chosen carbonated water over humanitarianism. The 29-year-old actress is cutting ties with Oxfam after eight years as an ambassador for the humanitarian group. At the centre of the breakup was Johansson’s support for the Israeli company SodaStream. The company, which makes home soda machines and home beverage carbonation systems, has a factory within the section of the West Bank that was won by Israel in 1967 but is currently claimed by Palestinians. Oxfam is 100% anti-Israeli settlement trade but Johansson says she is a “supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine.” Also, she likes money. Johansson is to appear in a high-profile SodaStream ad during the Super Bowl on Feb. 2. The Toronto Star

School-LunchGeorgia Republican Jack Kingston’s dream has come true: no one gets a free lunch! Bonus: children’s tears. Children at a Utah elementary school were in tears on Wednesday after they had their meals taken and thrown away because there were outstanding balances in their accounts. The district’s child-nutrition manager decided the best way to deal with the large number of parents who still owed money for lunches was to withhold food from the children. And because cafeteria workers could not see which children owed money until after they purchased something, they had to physically take away the children’s lunches in front of the whole school and throw them out. Geez, couldn’t they at least have let the kids work it off? Perhaps sweep the cafeteria floor? Raw Story

boston-bomber-dzhokhar-tsarnaevBoston Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev may have to prep himself for the death penalty. Federal prosecutors on Thursday announced they will seek the death penalty against 20-year-old terrorist if he is convicted in a trial this year. “The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision,” Holder said in a statement. Which is fancy speak for “you deserve to die”. Tsarnaev has been charged with about a million things including Conspiracy to Use A Weapon of Mass Destruction Resulting in Death. Hopefully, for Tsarnaev’s sake, if his case ever does make it to death row, they get that whole lethal injection drug mishap under control – otherwise I’d think I’d rather go by bomb.
