PR Fail: #myNYPD Backfires on NYC Police Department

 New York City Police Department

The New York City Police Department learned the hard way that asking New Yorkers to tweet photos of themselves with police officers may not be the best idea.

On Tuesday, the New York City Police Department asked: “Do you have a photo with a member of the NYPD? Tweet us & tag it #myNYPD.”

Little did they know New Yorkers are a cynical bunch and the police department’s public outreach campaign quickly turned into a PR fail.

The twitter call-out did elicit a few family friendly images of smiling police officers, but mostly people were just being dicks about it and posted photos of police brutality and officers asleep on the job.

#myNYPD became so popular that at one point, the hashtag was trending in the top 10 on Twitter, not only for New York, but in the world. The backlash quickly spread to the Los Angeles police department where #myLAPD began to trend, followed by the Seattle, San Francisco and Denver police departments.

Deputy Chief Kim Y. Royster said in a brief statement Tuesday night that the NYPD is working on “creating new ways to communicate effectively with the community” and stated that the uncensored and open dialogue was good for the city. Yes, it was good for the city. It taught everyone a very valuable lesson: be careful what you ask for on the internet.

U.S. Airways Sends Porn Tweet Apology, Then Apologizes

U.S. Airways Tweet

While American Airlines is busy hunting down 14-year-old white girl terrorists, U.S. Airways is sending out pornographic tweets to disgruntled passengers.

When a pissed off passenger took to Twitter to air her grievances about sitting on the tarmac for an hour, U.S. Airways responded with a nice little note… and a picture of some girl getting nosedived by a 777 replica. Oops. Full version available here.

After U.S. Airways realized they had posted a picture of a vagina swallowing a plane, they went into full damage control and deleted the Tweet. Unfortunately for them, it took a full hour for them to realize their pornographic error and by that time it had been retweeted hundreds, if not billions, of times.

US Aiways Apology

U.S Airways claims another user had sent the naked image to the company’s Twitter account and they were trying to flag the image as inappropriate but instead mistakenly included it in a message to a complaining customer. Right…

Meanwhile, now that American Airlines is dealing with teenage terrorist threats and U.S Airways is emerged in some kind of porn scandal, Southwest Airlines has seized the moment and decided to wow it’s passengers with a flight attendant turned comedian. Passengers on the short flight to Salt Lake City, Utah, were treated to a one-woman safety features/stand-up show that ended in raucous applause and cheers. The viral video had more than 630,000 hits by early Tuesday morning.

Probably Not a Good Idea to Tweet a Terrorist Threat to an Airline…

American Airlines Dutch Tweet

A 14-year-old Twitter obsessed tween is learning the hard way that threatening a major airline on social media may not be the best idea.

On Sunday morning, 14-year-old “Sarah” from the Netherlands addressed a tweet to the US-based airline implying she was an al Qaeda operative planning an attack.

AA Tweet 2

Well that sounds pretty legit…. but American Airlines wasn’t taking any chances and wrote back:

AA Tweet Response

At this point Sarah freaked out and quickly backtracked, saying she was simply a 14-year-old white girl who made the whole thing up.

Tweets More

“I’m just a fangirl pls I don’t have evil thoughts and plus I’m a white girl,” she tweeted.

Well, if she’s a white girl she can’t possibly be a terrorist! Case closed. But just to play it safe, Sarah let everyone know that she blocked the FBI from her Twitter account. That should do the trick!

Meanwhile, over at the FBI headquarters….

FBI Agent 1: “Did you complete surveillance on that airline bomb threat?”

FBI Agent 2: “I tried sir, but she blocked us on Twitter! There’s nothing we can do.”

FBI Agent 1: “Damn. We’ll have to add her on Facebook now…”

I guess the Facebook strategy worked because on Monday the Dutch teen was arrested in Rotterdam and questioned by the police.

“We’re not in a state that we can communicate any state of charges at this point,” a Dutch police spokesperson said. “We just thought it was necessary to bring this out mostly because of the fact that it caused a great deal of interest on the Internet.”

But in the end it was all worth it because Sarah achieved what other 14-year-old girls only dream of: thousands of Twitter followers!

“Omg I got over 10k rts for that tweet omg” Sarah tweeted.

“Over 20k followers yay”

Yay! Her criminal record (and underwear) may be permanently stained, but she’ll always have her Twitter followers – until it Twitter suspends her account… which they already did.

Minnesota Rep. Pat Garofalo Get Into More Twitter Trouble

Pat Garofalo NBA Tweet

Turns out Toronto Mayor/Crackhead Rob Ford’s confused tweet about daylight savings time wasn’t the only political gaffe on Twitter this week. Minnesota State Rep. Pat Garofalo joined the ridiculous tweet club, claiming that street crime would increase if the NBA disbanded, which was seen by some as racist.

Garofalo tweeted Sunday that “Let’s be honest, 70% of teams in NBA could fold tomorrow + nobody would notice a difference w/ possible exception of increase in streetcrime.”

Despite the outcry, the fifth-term Republican initially stuck to his words, insisting they were misinterpreted and not at all racist. But as the complaints rolled in, Garofalo caved and apologized for his offensive comments.

“I sincerely apologize to those who I unfairly categorized,” said Garofalo, who’s seeking reelection in the fall. “The NBA has many examples of players and owners who are role models for our communities and for our country. Those individuals did not deserve that criticism and I apologize.”

He also insisted that his blunt comments didn’t have any racial motivation behind them.

“I don’t have a racist bone in my body. I pride myself on the fact I’ve tutored in inner-city Minneapolis,” Garofalo said.

Don’t forget to mention your black friend, Pat!

Pat Garofalo is no stranger to Twitter feuds. The notorious NBA-hating Republican has found himself in many social media spats, including one in which he made fun of liberal blogger Eric Pusey for his last name.
