Death By Firing Squad… And Other News

Firing Squad

Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a law on Monday turning Utah into the only state to allow firing squads for executions – if lethal drugs happen to be unavailable.

The Republican-sponsored bill came to be amid national concerns about the efficacy of lethal injections. In addition to increased difficulties obtaining the drugs (caused by European manufacturers opposed to capital punishment refusing to sell the drug components to U.S. prisons), some states have witnessed several botched lethal injections recently. The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Paul Ray, argued that a team of trained marksmen is faster and more decent than the drawn-out deaths involved when lethal injections go awry (or as planned). Although Gov. Gary Herbert called the use of firing squads “a little bit gruesome”, apparently they aren’t gruesome enough to prevent him from signing the bill. Your move Texas. Raw Story

Afghan Mob Kills WomanProtests have been growing in Kabul after an Afghan woman was killed by an angry mob for allegedly burning the Quran. 27-year-old Farkhunda was beaten with sticks and set on fire by a crowd of men while police sat around doing nothing. The only problem (aside from the fact no one in Afghanistan seems to have a problem with burning a woman in public)? Farkhunda was innocent. “I couldn’t find any evidence to say Farkhunda burnt the Holy Koran,” General Mohammad Zahir told reporters at her funeral on Sunday. “Farkhunda was totally innocent.” Oops. Now, more than 2,000 people are marching to demand justice for Farkhunda. Police say they have arrested at least 19 people for their part in the lynch mob and it shouldn’t be hard to find the rest since the police were standing around watching the entire incident unfold. India Motorcycle RopePolice in India are charging a man for tying his 8-year-old daughter to his motorcycle. The Indian man was arrested after startled onlookers took pictures of the child roped to the motorcycle – pictures which were later published in local newspapers. While some are crying child abuse, the man said he was just trying to get his daughter to school to take an exam but she was reluctant to go. After bribing her didn’t work, the next logical step was to tie her to the back of his bike with ropes and drive her to school. Well, that’s one way to get your kids to school on time…  “My daughter will not die if I take her to school. But she will surely die if she does not study,” he told the Times of India. On the one hand, it’s great that he’s so passionate about educating girls in India, but on the other hand… he tied his 8-year-old to a motorcycle. BBC News

GermanwingsAn Airbus operated by Lufthansa’s Germanwings budget airline crashed Tuesday morning in the French Alps. The bad news is: all 150 people on board were killed including 16 schoolchildren. The good news is: well, there isn’t really any good news, but at least they found the plane this time. The Airbus A320, travelling from Barcelona to Duesseldorf, descended for eight minutes from an altitude of approximately 38,000 feet until it crashed. The cause of the crash is still unclear but the plane underwent routine inspection yesterday and the pilots did not issue a distress call. The search and rescue effort is now underway but given the snowy conditions and rough terrain, it will probably take days to recover the victims and the debris. CBC News

U.S. Senator Cruz speaks to members of the Texas Federation of Republican Women in San Antonio, Texas9/11 changed everything for Ted Cruz – well, mostly just his music choices. On Tuesday, CBS This Morning host Gayle King asked newly announced presidential candidate Ted Cruz what kind of music he listens to. Cruz revealed he’s a little bit country and not a little bit rock and roll because 9/11. “My music tastes changed on 9/11,” Cruz said. “And it’s a very strange—I actually, intellectually, find this very curious, but on 9/11, I didn’t like how rock music responded. And country music collectively, the way they responded, it resonated with me and I have to say, it—just as a gut level, I had an emotional reaction that says, “These are my people.” And so ever since 2001 I listen to country music, but I’m an odd country music fan because I didn’t listen to it prior to 2001.” It’s hard to find a way to cram 9/11 into every response you give, but somehow Ted Cruz managed to do it. This is going to be a GREAT campaign! Politico

Current Event Cat of the Day: Seven Dead Babies

Current EVent Cat - Seven Dead Babies

Police is Pleasant Grove, Utah arrested a 39-year-old woman after they found seven dead babies packaged in cardboard boxes in her garage.

Authorities believe Megan Huntsman gave birth to the babies over a 10-year-period, killed them one by one, and stored them in the garage.

Megan’s ex-husband, Darren West, believed to be the father of the seven dead babies, discovered the first body in the garage and alerted authorities. Officers responded to the call on Saturday and after searching the garage they discovered six more tiny bodies stuffed in separate cardboard boxes. Hunstman was promptly arrested and charged with six counts of murder. Not seven? Nope, only six.

Darren West, who was in prison recently on drug-related charges, was apparently too hopped up on drugs to figure out where his seven missing babies disappeared to.

We don’t believe he had any knowledge of the situation,” police spokesman Michael Roberts said of West.

When asked how the husband could not have known his wife had given birth to seven children, Roberts replied: “That’s the million-dollar question. Amazing.”

Neighbours in the middle-class neighbourhood were shocked and appalled by the situation. None of them even knew Megan Huntsman was pregnant in recent years and couldn’t understand why Huntsman’s three grown children, who were still living in the house, didn’t notice infants going missing left, right, and centre.

“What’s shocking is the three older ones living there and not noticing that their mother was pregnant,” one neighbour said.

“It’s shocking and kind of morbid and strange.”

But no one was more shocked than the officers who responded to the initial call.

“They got more and more shocked each box they opened,” Roberts said.

I suppose… but after finding the sixth dead baby, is a seventh one that much more shocking?

Crazy Utah Mom Buys Out Full Stock of “Indecent” T-Shirts

Judy Cox Hates T-shirts

Judy Cox was out shopping with her 19-year-old son at University Mall in Orem, Utah when she come across something so shockingly offensive she almost fainted: T-shirts with images of lingerie models.

The Utah mother was so outraged by the T-shirt display in the window of a PacSun store that she immediately went up to the store manager and complained – but not before shielding her precious 19-year-old’s eyes.

“On our way to another store we passed the PacSun store, and I just stopped dead in my tracks,” Judy Cox said.

“The bottom of one woman is completely exposed, uncovered and it’s a very provocative pose that she’s in,” Cox told continued. “Clearly it was offensive and I was most concerned about the youth and the children that would be viewing this.”

Won’t somebody please think of the children!! HelenLovejoy

The store manager agreed that the t-shirts were a bit racy, but explained that they couldn’t take down the display without permission from the corporate office.

But that wasn’t good enough for Judy, who has apparently never walked past a Victoria’s Secret store.

“As I was leaving the mall I just had this thought come to me that I can’t leave it, I can’t let it stay in the window for three or four more days while someone makes a decision,” Cox said.

So Judy did what any sane Mormon mother would do and bought the store’s entire stock of offensive t-shirts. In total Judy spent $567 on the pornographic t-shirts, which she plans to return in 59 days – keeping in line with the store’s 60-day return policy.

However, with the inventory on these shirts at zero, the corporate office will probably just end up sending another shipment since they sold so well at the Utah location. So… she sure showed them.

Judy has since contacted two ultra-conservative organizations, Women for Decency and One Million Moms, to help in her quest to stop the spread of indecent material. Next week they will most likely tackle pornography by buying all the online porn they can find. That should keep them pretty busy.

Bad News for Gay Mormons, Good News for Anti-Gay Hunger Strikers

Gay Utah Mormon

The Supreme Court has put a hold on a Utah judge’s decision to strike down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, effectively putting a temporary stop to gay marriage in the state.

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a brief order blocking any new same-sex unions in the state until a federal appeals court can take a look at the case. More than 900 gay and lesbian couples have married in Utah since Judge Robert Shelby’s December 20 ruling that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage violates same-sex couples’ constitutional rights.

While gay and lesbian couples in the heavily Mormon state are undoubtedly upset at the recent transgressions, there is at least one Mormon out there who is relieved – that he can start eating again.

Trestin Meacham, a 35-year-old Utah man, went on a hunger-strike starting December 21 in protest of Judge Shelby’s decision. While it’s rare to see someone go on a hunger strike so others will have fewer rights, Meacham vows to remain vigilant on his crusade to end same-sex marriage in Utah. Having already lost 25 pounds on his water and vitamin diet, Meacham claims he will fast until Utah decides to nullify the court’s decision.

“This is what happens when Washington decides that a culture and way of life is incompatible with what it decrees. People of faith everywhere need to wake up, what they did to the native Americans, they are now doing to us,” Meacham wrote on Facebook.

I don’t think Washington is handing out blankets riddled with smallpox to heterosexual Mormons, but perhaps the lack of food is effecting Meacham’s brain. Let’s hear a few more Meacham rants:

“The effects of gay marriage? I’m pretty sure a cake maker and handful of photographers, who exercised their right of religious freedom can tell you about the harmful effects of gay marriage. It basically means the end of the first Amendment.”

“The homosexual movement is designed to destroy freedom of religion. I’ve been saying this for years while pointing out case after case, and few cared. But if it involves someone on TV, the world comes apart! They can vandalize churches, verbally lynch religious leaders, and drive people like me from military service; and it’s okay.”

Luckily, most Utah residents aren’t ready to let that kind of crazy into their lives right now. In 2012, Meacham ran for the Utah State Senate as a candidate for the Constitution Party, whose platform “rejects the notion that homosexuals, transgenders or those who are sexually deviant are deserving of legal favor or special protection.” He lost by 73 percentage points.

Chinese Couple Trades Baby for iPhone… And Other News

iPhone Baby

A Chinese couple is in trouble for selling their baby for $8,000 to go on an online shopping spree.

The unemployed couple began posting online ads for their unborn child in earlier this year. After giving birth at home, the couple handed over the baby girl in exchange for a large cash payment. While the couple claims they did it for the baby’s own good, their credit card statements say they did it for luxury goods. One bill shows that immediately after “trading” the baby girl, they made a large number of online purchases, including an iPhone and a pair of “high-end” running shoes. What morons – if they had just waited 5 years they could have had their own iPhone/shoe making machine! What a waste of free child labour. The Telegraph

Goblin ROcksLooks like the Chinese aren’t the only ones to destroy ancient artifacts. A group of Boy Scout leaders may face felony charges for destroying a rock formation millions of years old in Utah. While out in Goblin Valley State Park, the trio of men decided to film themelves knocking over one of the ancient rock formations and high fiving each other when the job was complete. Utah State Park officials were not impressed. It took millions of years for the rocks to form like that… and only 20 seconds for some fat rednecks to destroy it. What’s worse if that they went against one of the most sacred of Boy Scout traditions: leave no trace. I mean, they should have at least destroyed the video that traced them to the crime scene. The Salt Lake Tribune

Oops Prison MistakeHow to escape from jail if you’re too lazy to dig your way out: fake release papers! Two convicted murderers walked out of Florida prisons in late September and early October after they forged their own release papers. Police are now on the hunt for the two men, convicted for separate murders in 1998 and 1999. The state Department of Corrections isn’t about to take the blame for it though. They insist they were merely following a court order and that no one in the department is at fault for the men’s release. Maybe they were just following orders, but if both men were serving life sentences without the possibility of parole, wouldn’t it seem weird that they were both being released so early? CNN

Roma ProtestFrance is continuing its war on the Roma by deporting two teenage girls. A 15-year-old Kosovar girl was forcibly taken from a bus during a school field trip and was deported back to Kosovo with her family. Another 19-year-old Armenian student was also sent packing after authorities deemed her an illegal immigrant. French students took to the streets of Paris on Friday to protest the government deportations but France’s the interior minister is sticking to his “France is not here to welcome the Roma” message. Daisy ColemanAfter two year, Daisy Coleman, an alleged rape victim, is having her case reopened. The county prosecutor who initially dropped the felony charges against the two 17-year-old boys—accused of sexually assaulting then-14-year-old Coleman and a 13-year-old friend – said that he’s reopening the case. Coleman is happy the case is being reopened and recently wrote a blog post describing the ridicule and depression she’s endured. But Fox News guest and criminal defense attorney Joseph DiBenedetto thinks she may have had it coming: “What did she expect to happen at 1 a.m. in the morning after sneaking out?” he asked. “I’m not saying she deserved to be raped, but knowing the facts as we do here including what the prosecutor has set forth, this case is going nowhere and it’s going nowhere quick.” When you start out saying, “I’m not saying she deserved to be raped…”, you probably deserve to be raped.
