Washington Redskins: Too Offensive for the U.S. Patent Office

Redskins

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the Washington Redskins’ trademark registration, finding the football team’s name “disparaging” to Native Americans.

The case was filed on behalf of five Native Americans who argued the trademarked team name was offensive. The patent board agreed.

“We decide, based on the evidence properly before us, that these registrations must be cancelled because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered,” the board said.

And this isn’t the first time the board has tried to ban the Redskin name. In 1992, the board tried to remove the team’s trademark protections, ruling that the trademarks were disparaging, but a federal court overturned it on a technicality.

The latest ruling applies to six trademarks – all containing the word Redskin – associated with the Washington DC National Football League (NFL) team. But the decision only affects the right to register the trademarks – it won’t stop the team from continuing to use the Redskins name. However, it will make it much more difficult for the team to sue somebody for using the name and logos. So basically anyone could go around selling Redskins merchandise.

Despite the latest decision and the many, many calls for the team’s name to be changed, owner Daniel Snyder has refused, saying it honours Native Americans – much like a team named the Newark N*ggers would honour African Americans and the San Francisco Fags would honour the LGBT community. In fact, Daniel Snyder is so in tune with the Native American community that he founded a charity to benefit Native Americans, called the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation (not to be confused with the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever).

But despite Snyder’s insistence that Native Americans are totally fine with the racial slur, there’s been growing pressure to change the team’s name – even by President Obama himself. So basically it’s only a matter of time before they throw in the towel and just rename the team. And because white guilt is infectious, the Cleveland Indians might want to start putting together a brainstorming session to come up with a new team name too. May I suggest the Cleveland Native Americans Forced onto Reservations and into Poverty by the US Government? Go NAFRPUSGs!!!!

US Rep. Renee Ellmers Needs Her Paycheck… And Other News

Renee Ellmers

Furloughed employees – blah blah blah. The bottom line is that Renee Ellmers NEEDS her paycheck.

The US government shutdown has furloughed some 800,000 federal employees who must go without pay until the Republicans and the Democrats become friends. But since they President and the members of Congress are considered “essential” to the country, they are still being paid. In lieu of this, some members of the Republican party have announced that they will be foregoing their paychecks during the GOP-led shutdown. But not North Carolina’s Renee Ellmers! The Republican congresswoman said that she needs her $170,000 annual salary too much to donate it. “I need my paycheck. That’s the bottom line,” Renee Ellmers said to Raleigh’s WTVD Channel 11. “I understand that there may be some other members who are deferring their paychecks, and I think that’s admirable. I’m not in that position.” I don’t think the 800,000 furloughed employees are in that position either – but they don’t have a choice…or a rich surgeon for a husband. Raw Story

Hell RideLast weekend a pack of motorcyclists overreacted to some classic Asian driving. A driver of a SUV accidently rear-ended a biker on the road and when he pulled over to see if he was ok, the bikers attacked! Fearing for his life, the driver, Alexian Lien, sped away, running over one of the bikers in the process. The motorcyclists, who included an undercover NYPD cop, followed him, smashed the SUV windows, pulled the dad out of the car and beat him while his wife and toddler watched from the car. The cop, who did not want to blow his cover, did nothing to stop the attack. He has since lawyered up. NBC News

GiapHe ousted the US from Vietnam and now Jesus (?) has ousted him from earth. North Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap died on Friday at the ripe age of 102.  The General was most famous for his battlefield victory at Dien Bien Phu which drove France out of the country as well as his relentless resistance to US troops. The former teacher turned respected military figure was among the last survivors of the generation that saw Vietnam go from colonial rule to communism. New York Times

Police officers investigate the scene where a man set himself on fire in front of the U.S. Capitol on the U.S. National Mall in WashingtonDC is really going crazy… Did they shutdown all the psychiatric facilities too? One day after a delusional woman who believed President Obama was spying on her crashed into the White House gates, a man lit himself on fire on the National Mall while facing the US Capitol. The unidentified man doused himself in gasoline and set himself ablaze while nearby joggers attempted to extinguish him with their sweaty jogging shorts. The victim was “conscious and breathing” when firefighters arrived to airlift him to the hospital. No word yet on his motivation for burning himself alive or whether or not he had signed up for Obamacare yet. USA Today

Egyptian clashesI guess that ban on all Muslim Brotherhood related activities didn’t quite take. Supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood clashed with opponents and Egyptian riot police in central Cairo. The Brotherhood buddies were marching in protest on their way to Tahrir Square when security forces intervened. The police resorted to the tactic of firing tear gas into the crowds. Better than firing bullets! Oh wait, they did that too. Four people are reported dead and at least 40 others injured.  BBC News

Current Event Cat of the Day: Miriam Carey, the DC Driver

Current Event Cat - DC Driver Miriam Carey

New details are in about Miriam Carey, the DC driver who tried to ram her car into the White House and ended up being shot by Capitol Hill police.

The driver, Miriam Carey, 34, was a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut who was suffering from a rough bout of post-partum depression.

On Thursday, Carey tried to bypass a security gate at the White House in her car. Officers then opened fire as she drove off towards Capitol Hill. After she crashed and exited the car, she was shot and killed by the police. Her 1-year-old child, Erica, was in the car at the time of the chase but was unharmed. The girl was taken to a hospital and is now in protective custody. An investigation of why the chase ended with an unarmed women being shot dead is now underway.

As for possible motivations for her crazy behaviour, Miriam Carey was apparently delusional and reportedly believed the President had communicated with her. Law enforcement officials also suggested that she believed President Obama was stalking her. Then shouldn’t she have been driving away from the White House? Perhaps, but according to her boyfriend, Carey believed that President Barack Obama had placed Stamford, Connecticut, where they lived, under lockdown and that her home was under electronic surveillance. So maybe she was trying to steal the surveillance footage? But the real question is, was it really necessary to gun her down?

Washington DC Continues its Downward Spiral

Washington DC Shooting

Washington DC is losing it. The United States Capitol was locked down around 2:30 p.m after multiple shots were fired in front of the building. First a shutdown, then a lockdown? DC is a hot mess.

The lockdown only lasted 30 minutes after multiple gunshots were reported on Capital Hill. Police believe it was an isolated incident that began when female driver tried to ram her car into White House gate. A high speed chase ensued and ended outside of the Capitol building when she was fired on upon exiting the vehicle. A police officer was injured in the car crash and a small child was found unhurt in the suspect’s car. In a city is still reeling from the Navy Yard shooting that left 12 people dead, residents were understandably on edge.

No word yet on what the driver was trying to accomplish, but my sources (aka my cats) tell me she was probably trying to lock the politicians in the Capitol building until they can figure out a solution to the government shutdown. Or she was an angry tourist frustrated at being unable to properly see the Washington DC sites. Or a furloughed federal employee out for revenge. Or a confused citizen trying to figure out how to sign up for Obamacare. The possibilities are endless!

Meanwhile, talks between President Obama and congressional leaders have failed to end the political deadlock. Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Senate leader Mitch McConnell continue to complain that Obama and the Democrats will not negotiate. Obama says he is not budging and refused to set a precedent where “an extremist wing” of a party holds a government to ransom. Fair enough.

Current Event Cat of the Day: Aaron Alexis

Current Event Cat - NAval Yard Rampage Aaron Alexis

The Washington D.C Navy Yard shooting rampage ended yesterday with the death of the gunman, Aaron Alexis.

While information about the killer was scarce amid the chaos yesterday, things are now getting pieced together. Aaron Alexis, who ended up killing 13 people and wounding at least eight on Monday, was in the Navy Reserves but was discharged from in January 2011 for a “pattern of misconduct.”

After that, Aaron Alexis, 34, worked for a military subcontractor and he was employed as a technical contractor at the Washington Navy Yard, which allowed him access to the building.

Alexis had a less than stellar police record: he had been arrested twice, once in 2004 for shooting at the tires of a neighbor’s car in Seattle and again in 2010 for firing a bullet into his Ft. Worth apartment. According to a 2004 Seattle police report, a family member said he had “anger management problems.” No kidding.

The gunman was also no stranger to mental health problems. He was treated for paranoia, trouble sleeping and hearing voices.

No motive is known for the attack. Disgruntled employee? Crazy in the head? Boredom? Investigators are working on piecing together a plausible motive…

The victims ranged in age from 46 to 73, and details about their identities and lives have just begun to trickle out. Authorities said they are still contacting some of the victims’ families.
