No One Gets a Free Lunch! Except for Jack Kingston – He Gets a Free Lunch

Jack Kingston Free Lunch

Fresh off his “there’s no such thing as free lunch” for school children speech, it’s been revealed that Rep. Jack Kingston gets quite a few free lunches of his own.

Georgia Republican Jack Kingston made headlines a few weeks ago after he suggested that low-income school children should sweep the floors of their school cafeteria to learn a valuable lesson: there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Sweep Caf“But one of the things I’ve talked to the secretary of agriculture about: Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch? Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria — and yes, I understand that that would be an administrative problem, and I understand that it would probably lose you money,” Kingston said. “But think what we would gain as a society in getting people —getting the myth out of their head that there is such a thing as a free lunch.”

But Kingston, who defended his proposal as a “discussion about the work ethic in America,” is no stranger to free lunches. An investigation by Savannah TV station WSAV 3 found that Kingston, who is currently running for Senate, expensed as much as $4,182 worth of lunches for his office over the past three years. The anti-federal lunch program poster boy also expensed $145,391 worth of meals for campaign events as well as $24,313 in per diem “walking around money” costs travelling as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.

Even though Kingston doesn’t sweep the cafeteria floor before he eats, he feels his free lunches are justified. The congressman “defended his work ethic” to WSAV 3, saying he works 60 hours to 70 hours a week. So to sum up Jack Kingston’s free lunch philosophy, poor children should have to spend 60-70 hours per week cleaning up after the rich kids in the cafeteria in order to earn their bologna sandwich.

Rep. Louie Gohmert Joined Congress to Prevent Single Moms from Receiving Welfare Checks

Louie Gohmert Congressional Republicans

Some people become politicians for noble causes: to help the less fortunate, to give their constituents a voice, to eliminate corruption. But not Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert. He became a congressman to stop single mothers from getting welfare checks.

The Texas Republican revealed last Thursday that he went into politics because he was so outraged that single women were having as many as 15 babies and getting welfare checks.

“If it weren’t for the policies in this War on Poverty declared 50 years ago, it may well be that I would not have ever run for Congress,” Gohmert said during a speech on the House floor. “Because what got me thinking about it first as a state district judge back in Texas was seeing more and more young women, single women coming before me — single moms — charged with welfare fraud.”

Apparently women in Texas discovered that “the government will send you a check for every baby you have out of wedlock” and decided to start popping them out Irish Catholic style.

“One women had had 15 kids, didn’t even know where they all were, that was the most that I ever dealt with,” Gohmert explained. “It began to really eat away with me that in the 60s the federal government, desiring to help poor moms who were dealing with deadbeat dads, decided, ‘We’ll help, we’ll give a check for every child you can have out of wedlock.’”

Because single mothers are a bigger threat to America than terrorist babies, Louie Gohmert is a big supporter of implementing a nationwide policy called a “family cap” which aims to cut off additional support to children born out of wedlock and currently on welfare.

Since Gohmert is such a fan of limiting the number of children single mothers can get welfare checks from, he must be a huge proponent of effective sex education, accessible contraception and abortion, right? WRONG. Instead, single mothers should practice Gohmert-approved abstinence only behaviour. And if they don’t, who cares? It’s their children that will suffer the punishment.

The Whole World Mourns Nelson Mandela… Even Paris Hilton. And Other News…

Paris Hilton Tweet

As South Africans gather in Johannesburg and Soweto to mourn their former leader, Nelson Mandela, who died on Thursday at age 95, there is one person who is taking the news especially hard: Paris Hilton.

But Paris isn’t upset about his death. No, Paris is upset about the bad publicity. As the news of Nelson Mandela’s death hit the internet, a fake Paris Hilton tweet eulogized Mandela, saying, “RIP Nelson Mandela. Your ‘I Have A Dream’ speech was so inspiring. Amazing man.” It was obviously a fake tweet – and not just because Paris refuted it by tweeting “Whoever made that stupid fake tweet lacks respect to the loss the world is mourning right now. Same goes for all the blogs who ran with it,” but because she obviously had no idea Nelson Mandela died until it became about her. On second thought, Paris was probably thrilled about the bad publicity. After all publicity is good publicity – especially for 32 year-old socialite has-beens. US Magazine

Dick CheneyRemember that time Dick Cheney called Nelson Mandela a terrorist? In the wake of Nelson Mandela’s passing, it’s been pointed out that Dick Cheney doesn’t regret his 1986 decision to vote against freeing the anti-apartheid leader. At the time, the US congress put together the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, a bill that called for tough sanctions and travel restrictions on the South Africa and its leaders, as well as the release of political prisoners like Mandela, then leader of the African National Congress (ANC). Although the measure passed with bipartisan support, both Ronald Reagan and his pal Dick Cheney voted against it, calling the ANC a “terrorist organization.” In 2000, Cheney reaffirmed his decision, saying, “The ANC was then viewed as a terrorist organization. I don’t have any problems at all with the vote I cast 20 years ago.” Well, I know someone who won’t be accompanying President Obama and Michelle to South Africa for a certain funeral…. North Korea CampsIn not surprising North Korean news, Amnesty International has released a series of satellite images showing North Korea’s large-scale network of labor camps – also known as torture factories. Although North Korea denies the existence of these political prison camps, the photos suggest that the inmate population is expanding even as tens of thousands are reportedly starved, raped, tortured, and even killed. “For Amnesty International, which has been investigating human rights violations for the last 50 years, we find North Korea to be in a category of its own,” said Amnesty’s East Asia researcher Rajiv Narayan, “The gruesome reality of North Korea’s continued investment in this vast network of repression has been exposed.” I wonder if any of the photos managed to capture Uncle Chang Song-thaek, Kim Jong-un’s powerful uncle who was recently “dismissed” from his post at the helm of North Korea’s military… Business Insider

Pee in a cupAmericans want everyone to pee in a cup. Welfare recipients, politicians, hospital patients – everyone. According to a Huffington Post poll, 64 percent of Americans are in favour of requiring welfare recipients to submit to random drug testing – a policy Republicans have been pushing for years. But what Americans love even more than forcing someone who makes $7.25 an hour to urinate in a cup to prove they’re not on drugs, is forcing members of Congress to pee in a cup. 78 percent say they support drug testing for congressional lawmakers. There goes the cocaine market in D.C… Huffington Post

NIgerian Man in BoatA Nigerian man survived three days at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after his tugboat sank to the bottom. The cook survived by breathing an ever-dwindling supply of oxygen in an air pocket and living off of one bottle of coke. As the temperature dropped to below zero, the cook, dressed only in his boxers, thought he was a goner. And he was – until a diver searching the wreck saw a hand. Assuming it was another corpse (they had already pulled out four bodies), the diver grabbed it and got the shock of his life. “When he went to grab the hand, the hand grabbed him!” said Tony Walker, project manager for the Dutch company DCN Diving. The rescue happened back in May but the video just went viral. NY Post

Current Event Cat of the Day: Food Stamp Cuts

Current EVent Cat - Food Stamp Cuts

Low-income families are bracing for $5 billion worth of food stamp cuts that go into effect Friday.

The cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (aka food stamp cuts) will slash monthly benefits for one in seven low-income Americans who rely on them to feed their families. These families are expected to lose about $36 per month on average and there are a lot of families. About 47.6 million Americans, or 23.1 million households, are currently on the food stamp program.

Congress voted to keep the cuts in place as Obama’s 2009 stimulus bill comes to an end in exchange for increased education funding and school nutrition programs. Cut food stamp programs and increase school nutrition programs? Makes sense… Hunger-Free Kids Act has a better political ring to it than the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP!

While some families will suffer real hardship over these cuts, CNN chose to showcase the WORST EXAMPLE EVER. CNN tells the struggle of Joyce Lewis, who lives with three other adults and one baby. Joyce and her family will lose $44 from their monthly food stamp benefits. Their current benefits total $800 a month for food but it never seems to last the four adults – none of whom have a job.

“When I get to the end, we always run out. I try to go to all the food pantries,” Lewis said.

How does $800 not give you enough food for a month? You live in Spring Hill, Florida, not New York City! Why do both your live-in daughters keep getting knocked up? Why does no one have a job?

Arg. Find a better example CNN. Unless your plan all along is to get people on board with the food stamp cuts – in which case, mission accomplished.

Air-Conditioning Is The Ugly Side of Welfare

Hasselbeck on Welfare

Fox News host Elisabeth Hasselbeck believes that air conditioning and television are the “ugly side” of welfare.

On Thursday’s episode of Fox & Friends, Hasselbeck brought up a report from libertarian Fox Business host John Stossel, which claims that entitlements have created a culture of dependence and that the taxpayer is footing the bill while recipients live the good life.

Stossel goes undercover as a journalist and asks welfare recipients questions about the “good life” that they’re leading.

“You have a cell phone?” Stosell asked a man on the street.

“Yeah of course I do,” he responds.

“Yeah, I have a TV,” one woman admits.

“Yeah, I have a television,” a man tells Stossel.

“Do you have air conditioning?” Stossel questions.

“Yes,” the man replies.

HOW DARE THEY – was Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s first reaction after watching the clips.

“Do these folks really need to be on welfare?” she asked. “Is welfare creating more victims than it’s actually helping?”

Yes says Stossel! Taxpayers are victims for having to fund it and welfare recipients are victims because now they are hooked on free stuff and totally lazy. Stossel claims that welfare is a new idea and before that private charities were used to help the poor. And of course the private charities did it better than the government “because they knew who needs help and who needed a kick in the rear.”

Hasselbeck agreed that welfare makes people far too dependent on the government, claiming people lack motivation because they can earn more money in some states being on welfare than they can working a minimum wage job.

“The motivation to go get a job is almost non-existent in 35 states,” Hasselbeck said.

So to sum up Fox & Friends’ general outlook, the poor should have:

  • no health care
  • no livable wages
  • no easily accessible contraception
  • no food stamps
  • no form of entertainment (television, games)
  • no form of communication (phones)

And they must be able survive summer in the south without air conditioning. Maybe that’ll give ‘em some motivation! Nothing gets people off their feet quite like extreme heat…
