Virginia State Senator Stabbed, Son Shot

Virginia Senator Deeds

Democrat or Republican, there’s terrible news out of Virginia today: Virginia state senator Creigh Deeds is in critical condition after being stabbed in his home and his son, Gus, is dead from a gunshot would.

When police responded to a call at Democratic Senator Creigh Deeds’s Bath County home, they found the former candidate for governor with stab wounds to his head and torso. They also found Deed’s son Gus, 24, who died at the scene from a gunshot wound.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened in the house in the early hours of Tuesday. Police also announced they were not looking for suspects – which means that there must have been some kind of father-son spat.

Gus Deeds underwent a mental-health evaluation at a hospital on Monday but was released due to lack of psychiatric beds. So I’m pretty sure he started the fight… what with his mental health problems and all. But did Gus stab his father then kill himself? Or did Gus stab his father and his father shot him in self-defense?  Nobody knows – except Creigh Deeds who is currently in critical condition at the University of Virginia Hospital. Another scenario: did Creigh Deeds shoot his son then stab himself to make it look life self-defense? No… that’s just creighzy.

Deed’s arch rival, Republican Bob McDonnell, who he ran against and lost to both in 2005 for attorney general and in 2009 for governor, issued this statement:

“In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking,” he said. “Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service. He cares deeply about Virginia, and the people of Virginia care deeply for him.”

“But not as much as they care deeply for me…”, Bob McDonnell added in his head.
